  • Carroll: Geno Smith will start 1st preseason game
Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said Geno Smith will start the first preseason game.

Advice: Drew Lock has seemingly made up some ground in the quarterback competition over the last week, but Smith continues to get the vast majority of the work with the first team. At this point, it looks like this job is Smith's to lose.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 4:32 pm

  • Goodell: Watson's behavior egregious and predatory
Roger Goodell said the league is seeking tougher punishment for Deshaun Watson because his "multiple violations" were "egregious" and "predatory behavior."

Advice: Watson was given a six-game suspension by Judge Sue Robinson last week. The league quickly appealed and is reportedly looking for an indefinite suspension. "We've seen the evidence, she was very clear about the evidence, she reinforced the evidence,'' Goodell said of Robinson's ruling. Former New Jersey attorney general Peter C. Harvey will hear the NFL's appeal. NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 3:51 pm

  • Zac Taylor: No timetable for Joe Burrow's return
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said there is not timetable for Joe Burrow's return from an appendectomy.

Advice: Taylor last week dismissed questions about when Burrow would be able to join his teammates at Bengals training camp, saying Burrow will be "back when he's ready" after undergoing surgery in the last week of July. Coming off a spectacular 2021 season in which he posted a 34:14 TD:INT ratio and league-leading marks in completion percentage (70.4) and yards per attempt (8.9), Burrow should be fine for Week 1. It would be nice for Bengals fans and fantasy drafters to see him return to the field in the coming days.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 8:40 am

  • Report: Jameis Winston (foot) to miss 'a few days'
NOLA.com's Jeff Duncan reports Jameis Winston (foot) will miss "a few days" and won't play in the Saints' preseason opener.

Advice: Winston left practice early on Monday with the foot issue. He likely wasn't going to play much -- if at all -- in the team's preseason game this week against the Texans. Look for the Saints to exercise caution with Winston as the regular season nears. An improved pass-catching group could make Winston a valuable late-round selection in deeper one-QB formats and superflex leagues.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 8:03 am

  • Wentz showing off inaccuracy at Commanders camp
The Athletic's Ben Standig reports Carson Wentz has had "an assortment pack of misfires" during Commanders training camp.

Advice: "Quarterbacks throwing to receivers against air (with no defense) is the football equivalent of a layup line," Standig said. "Yet, Wentz routinely has bricked passes in various directions. Overthrowing or firing too far out front has been the most common issue." Inaccuracy issues dogged Wentz during his final couple seasons with the Eagles and his lone season with the Colts. In 2021, Wentz had the league's sixth worst completion rate over expected. His misfires were cringe worthy during the final month of the season, when the Colts did everything they could to hide their struggling quarterback. Washington head coach Ron Rivera dismissed concerns about Wentz's camp struggles. “It’s a lot better than you give (Carson) credit for just because of the way things happen in practice,” Rivera said. “There’s a lot of little nuances that we see and that we look at and get to review. There are some inaccuracies, but it’s nothing that we are overly concerned about.” Wentz's start with Washington doesn't inspire much confidence for those hoping Terry McLaurin gets a QB upgrade in 2022.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Today, 6:32 am
