  • Haskins has looked surprisingly good
The Athletic's Mark Kaboly noted that Dwayne Haskins has looked "surprisingly good" in training camp.

Advice: After practice, Haskins said that he has "been told certain things" about his future with the Steelers, although he didn't add any further details. Given this comment and his hot start to training camp, it's fair to assume that Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh staff see Haskins as at least a long-term backup option. Haskins is still behind Mason Rudolph, who will draw the start in the Hall of Fame Game, but the latter has been lackluster in most of his opportunities with the Steelers. Haskins is far from a complete player as well but his first-round pedigree and impressive film at Ohio State point to an upside that Rudolph doesn't possess. With Ben Roethlisberger nearly at the end of his career, the battle for backup duties in Pittsburgh will be one to watch throughout camp.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 6:18 pm

  • 49ers making use of Lance's dual-threat ability
The San Jose Mercury News reports the 49ers are reportedly using third overall pick Trey Lance in an array of zone reads and designed runs.

Advice: One day after coach Kyle Shanahan said Lance would not get any first-team reps during training camp, the rookie lined up under center with the starters for at least one rep. Reports out of San Francisco indicate the team has dialed up a host of run plays for Lance, a welcome sign for fantasy owners who have identified the 21-year-old phenom as a potential sleeper. Lance is supposedly killing it at training camp, and it looks like it's becoming a real battle between him and veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 2:36 pm

  • Reich: No complications from Wentz's foot surgery
Colts coach Frank Reich disclosed that Carson Wentz's Monday foot operation did not reveal any new complications.

Advice: Reich said it was a "very successful surgery" for Wentz, who will be sidelined anywhere from 5-12 weeks. Will he play Week 1? Or will he not return until November? Both possibilities fit within the timeline, but it seems safe to assume the Colts will have someone else under center for the first week of the season. Jacob Eason is Indy's QB1 for now with sixth-round rookie Sam Ehlinger backing him up, but it's still possible they could add someone if Wentz's recovery goes along slowly. • Shurmur: 'Best version' of Lock in training camp
Speaking Tuesday, Broncos OC Pat Shurmur said he has seen the "best version" of Drew Lock in training camp.

Advice: The Broncos have one of the most intriguing QB competitions in the league with Lock dueling Teddy Bridgewater for the Week 1 nod. "I've seen both guys getting better," Shurmur said Tuesday. "This is the best version of Drew I've seen. He's done a really good job. ... Teddy's got experience, he's got experience in multiple offenses." With six weeks until the season, the two QBs appear neck and neck. • Eason to play two quarters in preseason opener
Fill-in Colts starting QB Jacob Eason is expected to play the entire first half of Indy's preseason opener against the Panthers on Aug. 15.

Advice: The 2020 fourth-rounder is the next man up with Carson Wentz set to miss the next 5-12 weeks after undergoing foot surgery. Should Wentz return near the front end of that timeline, Eason might only get a start or two. If it is more toward the back, Eason could get an entire half season's worth of starts. That is if he holds onto the starting gig. The Colts also have sixth-round rookie Sam Ehlinger in the house, and could easily end up adding a veteran complement. Eason has a big arm, but his but anticipation, accuracy, and short-area touch always left something to be desired during his star-crossed college career. It's not a good situation for the always quarterback-needy Colts. Not a dual threat, there isn't any late-round fantasy juice here.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 10:32 am
