Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said he believes Johnston is "really going to launch" as a starter during the 2024 season, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.

Advice: Horitz mentioned that in his time as director of player personnel with Baltimore last season that Johnston "was a player we liked," and he praised the 2023 first-round pick's work ethic this offseason while acknowledging "some rawness to his game" as a rookie. Johnston finished with a subpar 431 yards last season despite suiting up for all 17 games, but with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams (knee) no longer in the picture for Los Angeles, he has a clear path to a starting role alongside incumbent Joshua Palmer, while being joined by DJ Chark and rookie second-rounder Ladd McConkey. New coach Jim Harbaugh and OC Greg Roman could spark life to the Chargers' offense, though the new scheme projects as a run-heavy approach. Still, Johnston will have every opportunity to establish himself atop this depth chart, despite his uninspiring rookie production. He'll need to make some strides this offseason toward more consistently gaining separation, not to mention cleaning up issues with drops. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:48 pm

    • Thornton tacks on five pounds to improve play
Tyquan Thornton said he’s added weight in hopes of improving his performance and preventing injury.

Advice: Thornton stated his aim is to play at 190 pounds this season, both to improve his on-field performance and reduce his likelihood of suffering another impact-related injury. Thornton has failed to clear 0.80 yards per route run in his first two seasons, ostensibly slowed by an August 2022 clavicle injury and an August 2023 shoulder injury. Thornton must prove he belongs on an NFL roster this year. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:44 pm

    • Johnston ‘really going to launch’ in year two
Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said Quentin Johnston is “really going to launch” in his second season.

Advice: To be fair, Johnston doesn’t have anywhere to go but up at this point. The 2023 first-round pick took a back seat to several receivers last season and wound up catching 38 passes for 431 yards and two touchdowns in his rookie campaign. the 6-foot-4 speedster was targeted on just 13.3 percent of his routes, which ranked 50th amongst 60 receivers (min. 400 routes run). With Keenan Allen in Chicago and Mike Williams in New York, Johnston has a chance to open the season as the Chargers’ WR1. A step forward would be great for the Chargers and fantasy managers, who are looking for far more production in 2024 than we saw in 2023. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:06 am

    • Headed to nation's capital
Byrd agreed to a contract with the Commanders on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.

Advice: Byrd appeared in just one game during the 2023 campaign after the Falcons elevated him from the practice squad in early November. The 31-year-old had previously played 14 games with Atlanta in 2022, collecting 13 receptions (on 23 targets) for 268 yards and two touchdowns. Byrd has played for five teams during his career, and he'll now reunite in Washington with Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who was Bryd's head coach in Arizona during the 2019 season. • Commanders sign WR Damiere Byrd
Commanders signed WR Damiere Byrd, formerly of the Falcons, to a one-year contract.

Advice: Byrd had a cup of coffee on the Texans’ practice squad at the end of the 2023 season but saw his only action while on the Falcons last year. He appeared in one game and logged 18 snaps on offense. Byrd was a rotational receiver for Atlanta in 2022, totaling 268 yards and two scores across 14 games. Byrd’s previous experience as a kick and punt returner could be useful to the Commanders, though he is still a long-shot to make the team. Rotoworld Wednesday, 2:37 pm

    • Commanders to tryout WR Martavis Bryant
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reports free agent WR Martavis Bryant is scheduled to work out for the Commanders Wednesday.

Advice: Bryant was last on the Cowboys’ practice squad for the 2023 season. The 32-year-old last played an NFL snap in 2018 for the Raiders, spending four seasons with the Steelers prior to that. He bounced around the XFL and fan-controlled football over the last few years and is now trying out for the Commanders to attempt a return to the NFL. Rotoworld Tuesday, 6:00 pm

    • Outlook muddied after recent arrivals
Wilson has more competition for targets from quarterback Kyler Murray after the team selected Marvin Harrison fourth overall in this year's draft and then signed seven-year pro Zay Jones last week, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: Wilson spent much of the offseason No. 2, at best, in the pecking order in the Cardinals passing game behind tight end Trey McBride, but the recent additions leave Wilson's potential volume in the upcoming campaign up in the air. As a rookie third-round pick last year, Wilson put together a 38-565-3 line on 58 targets in 13 contests, but he produced just 13 catches (on 25 targets) for 164 yards and one touchdown in five outings with Murray under center. The arrival of the dynamic Harrison likely leaves Wilson fending for looks with Jones, who has three years with at least 500 receiving yards on his resume. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 3:56 pm

    • Finds new opportunity
Camp signed a contract with the Browns on Tuesday.

Advice: Camp bounced around multiple practice squads last season, including Carolina's, which he was waived from Friday. The Georgia Tech product will now work to make the most of his new opportunity in Cleveland after not being able to find his way onto an active NFL roster in 2023. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 2:00 pm

    • New competition in WR room
Claypool will have more competition for a roster spot after the Bills signed Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a one-year deal Tuesday.

Advice: The Bills seem to be signing as many journeymen wideouts with proven upside as they can this offseason, and seeing who can stick alongside highly touted rookie Keon Coleman and third-year man Khalil Shakir. For now, it looks like MVS, Claypool, Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins will battle for roster spots and positioning on the depth chart. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 9:25 am
