    • Officially signs with Detroit
Bates officially signed a two-year contract with the Lions on Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Advice: Presumably the contract is structured in such a way that the Lions could move on during training camp if Bates isn't able to replicate his trademark leg strength throughout the preseason, but the two-year deal is notable because NFL vagabonds Michael Badgley and James Turner are also on the roster. The Lions will hope Bates can replicate the success of spring football sensation Brandon Aubrey, who parlayed an excellent performance in the USFL into a record-setting rookie campaign with the Cowboys in 2023. Potentially playing in the comfy confines of Ford Field and being situated in a high-powered Detroit offense, Bates could be an immediate fantasy difference maker. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:10 am

    • Lions sign UFL’s Jake Bates to two-year deal
Lions signed K Jake Bates to a two-year contract.

Advice: It was reported earlier that the Lions were expected to sign Bates at the end of the NFL season. Now, ESPN’s Adam Schefter has confirmed that the kicking phenom will sign a two-year deal for a chance to compete with Michael Badgley for the starting job in camp. Bates was 6-of-10 on field goals of 50-plus yards during the UFL regular season and blasted a 64-yard game-winner in Week 1 for the Michigan Panthers. Before signing with the Lions, Bates also met with the Commanders and Packers. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:06 am

    • UFL kicker Jake Bates expected to sign with Lions
KPRC2’s Aaron Wilson reports K Jake Bates is expected to sign with the Lions at the conclusion of the UFL season.

Advice: Bates visited with the Commanders last week but appears set to join the Lions. Currently kicking for the UFL’s Michigan Panthers, Bates has turned into a spring football phenom after making multiple field goals of 60-plus yards and going 6-of-10 on field goals of 50-plus yards on the season. Bates converted on 17 of his 22 attempts (77.3 percent) in the regular season and first caught the attention of football fans when he converted a 64-yard game-winning field goal in Week 1 of the UFL season. He’ll have a chance to compete for the Lions starting kicker job against incumbent Michael Badgley, who made all four of his field goal attempts in his four games with the team. Badgley is a career 82.4 percent kicker and has made just five field goals of 50-plus yards. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:31 am

    • Expected to sign with Detroit
The Lions are expected to sign Bates to a contract, though a potential signing won't be official until Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Advice: Bates has built quite a bit of buzz during his time with the UFL's Michigan Panthers, as the first field goal he made with the team was a 64-yard game-winning kick March 30 that established the record for the longest field goal in league history. In fact, throughout all of professional football, the only converted field goal from a longer distance is Justin Tucker's 66-yarder for the NFL's Ravens in 2021. Bates kicked two additional field goals of 60-plus yards during the UFL regular season and made 17 of 22 tries overall. His big leg can obviously be an asset in the NFL, and he'll likely compete with Michael Badgley and James Turner for kicking duties with the Lions if the signing does indeed go through. • Attending minicamp
Pineiro (hamstring) is participating in practice Tuesday at June minicamp, David Newton of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: Pineiro, who missed the final two games of Carolina's 2023 season due to a hamstring injury and has remained away from offseason activities while seeking a new contract, is now present at team facilities and appears healthy. Undrafted rookie Harrison Mevis is also present as an option to take reps in mandatory minicamp. Pineiro is currently heading into the final season of his two-year, $4.1 million contract, and he converted 25 of 29 field-goal attempts across 15 games last year. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 2:39 pm

    • Commanders sign K Ramiz Ahmed
      Commanders signed K Ramiz Ahmed.

Advice: Ahmed spent two seasons kicking for the University of Nevada, converting on 40-of-44 extra point attempts and 15-of-20 field goals. He had offseason stints with the Bears in 2020 and the Packers in 2022 but never caught on with a regular-season roster. He kicked in six games for the Birmingham Stallions during the 2024 UFL season, going 10-for-13 on his attempts and 4-of-7 on distances of 40-plus yards. Ahmed is far from a lock to be the Commanders’ Week 1 kicker, as the team will likely bring in additional competition for training camp. Rotoworld Thursday, 10:30 am
