    • Cameron Latu on track for training camp
49ers HC Kyle Shanahan said TE Cameron Latu (knee) is on track to be ready for the start of training camp.

Advice: Latu was a third-round pick of the 49ers in last year’s draft but didn’t see action in the regular season after undergoing knee surgery. In his final two seasons at Alabama, Latu caught 56 passes for 787 yards and 12 touchdowns. He’ll have a chance to compete for the backup role behind George Kittle this offseason. • Dropped by Steelers
The Steelers waived Gathings on Wednesday, Brian Batko of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: The 23-year-old tight end was picked up by the Steelers just last week, but the team has now decided to move in a different direction. Gathings, who also spent time with the Chiefs' practice squad in 2023, will now look elsewhere for another opportunity. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 2:31 pm

    • Progressing as planned
Latu (knee) has suffered no setbacks in his recovery and is expected to be ready for training camp, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Latu suffered a meniscus injury during a preseason game last year and missed the entirety of his rookie campaign. A third-round selection in the 2023 Draft, Latu will likely be competing with veteran Eric Saubert for the 49ers' No. 3 spot on the team's depth chart at tight end behind George Kittle (groin) and the newly acquired Logan Thomas. • Returns from injury
Barner (hamstring) practiced with the team Monday, Brady Henderson of ESPN.com reports.

Advice: The tight end sat out of rookie minicamp and missed OTAs at the end of May due to the injury. Now that he's back, the fourth-round pick can try to earn a role on a depth chart that also includes veterans Noah Fant and Pharaoh Brown. Rotowire.com Monday, 4:06 pm

    • 49ers sign TE Logan Thomas
NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reports 49ers signed TE Logan Thomas.

Advice: The converted quarterback has appeared in 30 games over the previous two seasons after missing significant time in 2021 due to a torn ACL. The 49ers had been in the market for help at tight end following the offseason departures of Ross Dwelley and Charlie Woerner, now securing a viable option behind one of the top tight ends in the game in George Kittle. The specifics of the deal have yet to be released, but it is safe to assume Thomas will see the field at a non-negligible rate after Dwelley and Woerner combined for more than 400 offensive snaps a season ago. • In line to sign with 49ers
The 49ers are slated to sign Thomas to a contract, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Advice: A quarterback in college, Thomas has come into his own as a tight end the past four seasons with Washington, hauling in 72 passes in 2020 and 55 last year. Overall, he averaged 9.2 YPC and 6.1 YPT and scored 14 touchdowns on 274 targets in 52 games during that span. With San Francisco, Thomas will provide a veteran presence in its TE room behind starter George Kittle. Rotowire.com Monday, 3:20 pm

    • Steichen: Woods ‘making a ton of plays’ in OTAs
Colts HC Shane Steichen says Jelani Woods has “been making a ton of plays” at OTAs.

Advice: Hamstring injuries have limited Woods to just 15 games through his first two seasons — all of which were played in 2022. Last year’s hamstring injury sidelined Woods for all of 2023, but the third-year tight end is reportedly healthy and playing well this offseason. The Indy Star’s Joel A. Erickson pointed out in a recent article that Woods has focused specifically on working out his legs and strengthening his hamstrings, quads, and hips in hopes of limiting these types of injuries going forward. Woods, who ran a 4.61 at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, caught 25 passes for 312 yards and three touchdowns as a rookie and caught eight passes for 98 yards against the Steelers that season. He’s an athletic tight end capable of turning in big performances if he’s able to stay healthy and put everything together. Woods could make for a sneaky late-round flyer in fantasy drafts starts to tap into his potential in 2024. Rotoworld Monday, 7:11 am

    • Likely announcing retirement soon
The Giants expect Waller to announce his retirement within the next week or so, ESPN.com's Jordan Raanan reports.

Advice: The team anticipates an announcement before mandatory minicamp June 11-13, with sources close to Waller suggesting he's leaning toward retirement. He said Friday that a decision is coming soon, and he's been busy off the field working on his music career and finalizing a divorce. Waller missed five or more games each of the past three seasons and thus finished with no more than 665 yards or three TDs in any of them. He had back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons in 2019-20 with the Raiders, peaking at 107-1,196-9 in 2020. If Waller has a late change of heart and decides to play another season, he'll be part of a New York offense that signed three guards in free agency and drafted WR Malik Nabers sixth overall, though the QB situation remains as shaky as ever with Daniel Jones recovering from an ACL tear and Drew Lock taking first-team reps this spring. Daniel Bellinger, Jack Stoll and Chris Manhertz give the Giants capable blockers at tight end, while incoming fourth-round pick Theo Johnson has the speed (4.57 40) and size (6-foot-6, 259) to develop into a receiving threat. Waller will turn 32 in September, five days after the Giants' season opener against Minnesota. Rotowire.com Monday, 6:51 am

    • Report: Giants expect Darren Waller to retire
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports the Giants expect Darren Waller to announce his retirement.

Advice: The most we’ve seen of Waller this offseason came from a . The Giants haven’t given a deadline for Waller to announce his decision, but according to Raanan, he “is likely to make a decision by next week’s mandatory minicamp about his playing future,” adding that people close to the team believe he’ll opt to walk away. Waller caught 52 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown over 12 games last season and has played in 12 or fewer games in each of his last three seasons. The soon-to-be 32-year-old has dealt with multiple injuries over the years. Third-year tight end Daniel Bellinger would presumably get the first crack at the starting job if Waller does retire. In two seasons, Bellinger has caught 55 passes for 523 yards and two touchdowns and could have some streaming upside on a team short on receiver talent. Rotoworld Monday, 5:45 am
