• McCarthy ‘definitely’ seeing progress from Lance
Cowboys HC Mike McCarthy said he’s “definitely” seeing significant progress from Trey Lance this offseason.

Advice: Lance continues to work his way back to relevance after being traded to the Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round draft pick last summer. Lance didn’t play a regular season snap in 2023, but McCarthy said, “He’s close to being a master of the system” and that Lance has a “really high understanding.” He added that getting Lance as many reps as possible will be key to him taking the next step in his development. Lance’s long-term NFL future is very much up in the air at this time, but the Cowboys may have some underlying incentives — particularly when it comes to Dak Prescott’s contract situation — to develop him as best they can. If he displays the potential that made him the No. 3 pick in the 2021 draft, it’s possible he will eventually get a chance to battle for a starting job with the Cowboys or elsewhere. • Could see more opportunities
In his second season as a pro, Washington believes that there's a "strong possibility" he can emerge as more of a receiving threat, Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reports.

Advice: In 17 regular-season contests as a rookie last season, Washington caught just seven of his 10 targets for 61 yards, but with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith on board, the 2023 third-rounder is a candidate to see more pass-catching opportunities in what figures to be a more tight-end friendly offense in Pittsburgh. At 6-foot-7, 264 pounds, Washington has the size to continue to make his mark as a run blocker, but the Georgia product has some untapped potential as a receiver and should have an opportunity to demonstrate that more in 2024, while working behind top option Pat Freiermuth in a TE corps that also includes Connor Heyward and MyCole Pruitt. • Waived by Giants
Brightwell (hamstring) was waived by the Giants with an injury designation Thursday, Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.

Advice: Brightwell ended the 2023 season on injured reserve with a hamstring injury, but it's unclear if that's the issue he's currently dealing with. He has rushed 41 times for 164 yards and a touchdown and has caught 11 passes for 92 yards through 37 games with the Giants. If the running back clears waivers, he'll revert to IR, where he'd be slated to remain unless he reaches an injury settlement. Rotowire.com Thursday, 7:48 am

  • Giants part ways with Gary Brightwell
    Giants waived/injured RB Gary Brightwell.

Advice: Brightwell was released with a waived/injured designation. The three-year pro has contributed primarily on special teams and has just 52 offensive touches to his name. Brightwell was a sixth-round pick of the Giants in 2021 and should have a chance to catch on with another team in training camp if healthy. In addition to the release of Brightwell, the Giants also signed safety Elijah Riley, who has spent the last two seasons with the Steelers in a backup role. Rotoworld Thursday, 7:38 am

  • Waived due to undisclosed injury
The Jets waived/injured Stepp on Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Advice: The Jets signed Stepp on May 13 as an undrafted free agent out of Western Kentucky. If the running back clears waivers, he'll revert to injured reserve. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 8:19 pm

  • Participating in OTAs
Slayton (thumb) participated in Tuesday's OTAs practice, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Slayton is working toward a hopeful contract extension with the Giants, but he's on the field for voluntary workouts at OTAs. The 2019 fifth-round pick still appears slated for a starting gig, though rookie first-rounder Malik Nabers should be the top man in this wide receiver corps, with Jalin Hyatt and Wan'Dale Robinson also in the mix. Slayton appears fully healthy after having dealt with a thumb injury down the stretch in 2023. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 12:27 pm

  • Malik Cunningham makes switch to wide receiver
Ravens QB Malik Cunningham has switched to wide receiver.

Advice: According to Ravens team writer Ryan Mink, the Ravens listed Cunningham as a wide receiver on their roster. Mink also added that Cunningham made “several grabs” during Thursday’s OTAs. Cunningham went undrafted out of Louisville last season and split time at quarterback and receiver with the Patriots last season before being signed off the Patriots practice squad by the Ravens in December. It now appears Cunningham will make a permanent move to receiver for the Ravens, which may give him a better chance at sticking in the league. He’ll have a chance to earn a spot on the 53-man roster this offseason but is most likely to land on the practice squad as a developmental player. Rotoworld Thursday, 2:42 pm

  • Almost over hamstring issue
Odunze (hamstring) is expected to resume practicing next week, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: Odunze participated in Chicago's first practice during the team's rookie minicamp earlier this month, but subsequently encountered hamstring tightness, as Dan Weiderer of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Bears seem to have been taking a cautious approach to the recovery of the rookie No. 9 overall pick, but it doesn't look like there's any real concern about his injury. Odunze will have plenty more time this offseason to build chemistry with rookie quarterback Caleb Williams, and to find his footing in what figures to be a starting role alongside DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. • Darius Slayton absent from voluntary OTAs
Giants HC Brian Daboll said Darius Slayton has not been attending voluntary OTAs.

Advice: Slayton is entering the final year of his contract and is set to earn $8.15 million this season. The 27-year-old receiver is coming off a season in which he totaled 50 receptions for 770 yards — both career highs — and four touchdowns. A former fifth-round pick of the 2019 draft class, Slayton is hoping to earn a new contract from the Giants before reporting to camp, but there’s been little word on whether or not the Giants plan to give him a new deal at this time. Slayton is a solid field stretcher who has averaged 15.1 YPR for his career. A clear WR2 in an offense that is set to feature Malik Nabers, Slayton, is a near-replacement level player who the team could prefer to try to upgrade over once his current deal expires at the end of this season.
