Having the first pick in the draft doesn't guarantee a title. It very well could in this case, though. Springfield Atoms did what top-flight fantasy managers do when they land the No. 1 overall pick. They constructed a juggernaut. The team is particularly deep at running back, as Jonathan Taylor and Nick Chubb are slated to combine for the highest point total of all starting RB groups in the league. Springfield Atoms are predicted to finish in first place in Payton34 FFL with a mark of 11-2-1 (1,663 points).

  • Kadarius Toney

Most Improved: Of all the offensive selections by Springfield Atoms, Toney is slated to take the biggest jump from last year. Coming off a rookie season in which he grabbed 39 passes for 420 yards in 9 games, totaling 42 fantasy points, Toney is projected to score 136 fantasy points with the Giants, a 223% gain. That makes him a valuable No. 3 WR for this squad.

  • Antonio Gibson

Regression Candidate: Of the 14 players selected by Springfield Atoms, Gibson seems poised to be the least likely to live up to last year among the offensive players. He's pretty much the anti-Kadarius Toney in that respect. After a season in which he ran for 1,037 yards and 7 TDs and had 42 receptions for 294 yards and 3 TDs, totaling 189 fantasy points, Gibson is projected to score 136 fantasy points with the Commanders, a 28% reduction. That would make him the No. 4 RB for this squad.

Draft Notes

  • Springfield Atoms went especially light at wide receiver, drafting the fewest of any team in the league with just three, trailing the league average of 4.1.

  • Springfield Atoms face a tough task in Week 9 when they have five players on a bye (Russell Wilson, Daniel Jones, Nick Chubb, Melvin Gordon III, and Kadarius Toney). Boom in the Endzone, your Week 9 opponent, won't be nearly as hamstrung with only two players (Trey Lance and Pat Freiermuth) on a bye.

  • Springfield Atoms have a straightforward road in Payton34 FFL this season based on projections with a strength of schedule ranked as the easiest. That doesn't mean you can coast through the season, though. For players who don't give their team the attention it needs, even soft schedules can turn tricky at any time.

  • Even with an unfilled slot at QB in the 6th round, Springfield Atoms drafted RB Antonio Gibson with the 61st pick, filling the WR/RB/TE flex position at the expense of a position of greater need.

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
