This draft by New England Patriots was like a finely tuned Peyton Manning-led offense, with all the pieces falling into place. Just like Peyton's offense, New England Patriots is expected to score a lot of points this season and finish first in Vintage Football League at 12-1-1 (597 points). With five WRs on the roster, New England Patriots guaranteed the WR position was taken care of. Compared to the league average of 31, their WRs projected average of 30 points won't be much different than the rest of the wideouts around the league. They also have the best QB duo in the league, as they added Cam Newton and Tom Brady to their squad.

Week 9 might require some artful managing from New England Patriots. They have eight players and the most projected fantasy points on bye that week. Taking a look at the entire season from start to finish, they have one of the weakest schedules. New England Patriots has the opportunity to close with a hot streak, as the last four games of their season are projected to be less difficult than the league average.

Draft Notes

  • Belichick or Bust

The fantasy hopes of New England Patriots rest heavily on the fortunes of Brady's crew, as they have eight Patriots on their roster.

  • Stockpiling Talent at TE

New England Patriots should be in good shape with four position groups projected to be better-than-average. TE is definitely the strongest among them.

  • Separating the Wheat from the Chaff

At three different positions, New England Patriots picked up projected top-3 players (Cam Newton, Rob Gronkowski, and Stephen Gostkowski).

  • Fantasy FĂștbol

This is the American version, folks. New England Patriots elected to go with two kickers, rather than adding depth at other positions.

  • Team of Champions?

New England Patriots is fielding a team of fantasy MVPs. Last season, three of their players were among the top-20 players that were on the most championship rosters across all Yahoo! leagues: Cam Newton, Rob Gronkowski, and Tom Brady.

  • Defense Wins Championships?

New England Patriots chose to go with two DEFs instead of loading up at other spots.

Player Analysis

    • Jamaal Charles, RB
    • Round 1, Pick 13
    Mr. Do-It-All

Jamaal Charles is projected to finish 10th in the league with 1,471 total yards (1,127 rushing, 343 receiving).

    • Cam Newton, QB
    • Round 2, Pick 16
Did New England Patriots Just Dab?

Among QBs last season, only Tom Brady appeared on more first-place fantasy rosters than the reigning league MVP.

    • Minnesota, DEF
    • Round 3, Pick 41
Don't Get Too Defensive Over This

But New England Patriots drafted Minnesota with the 41st pick, even though their ADP is only 114 across all Yahoo! leagues.

    • Markus Wheaton, WR
    • Round 6, Pick 72
Was the 72nd Pick the Right Time for Markus Wheaton?

New England Patriots apparently believes it is. The Steelers' wide receiver is projected to have 28 points this year, just a bit lower than his total from last year.

    • Kyle Rudolph, TE
    • Round 7, Pick 97
Was the 97th Pick the Right Time for Kyle Rudolph?

New England Patriots apparently believes so. The Vikings' tight end is projected to notch 21 points this year, after producing 23 last year.

Best Available

New England Patriots is projected to have a pair of subpar positions (K and WR), but K is clearly their worst unit and an area that will likely need an upgrade.

    • Randy Bullock
    • Rank 247, ADP 148
    • Matt Prater
    • Rank 269, ADP 129
    • Nick Novak
    • Rank 300, ADP 131

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
