    • Officially named starting QB
Coach Matt Eberflus named Williams' the Bears' starting quarterback at rookie minicamp Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Advice: Williams, the No. 1 overall pick of April's draft, was always a lock to start Week 1 over Tyson Bagent or Brett Rypien, but the team has wasted no time making Williams' position official, with Friday being the first day of on-field workouts for rookies. That allows Williams to immediately begin familiarizing himself with Chicago's offensive scheme without having to worry about splitting any reps. He can start establishing chemistry with fellow top-10 selection Rome Odunze during rookie camp, while veterans DJ Moore and Keenan Allen -- who both worked out with Williams and Odunze during the pre-draft process -- stand to arrive at team facilities for the start of OTAs. • Released by Carolina
The Panthers released Cohen on Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.

Advice: The 2017 fourth-round pick was an effective passing-down back and punt returner for three full seasons before suffering an ACL tear Week 3 of 2020. He hasn't played in a game since, with an Achilles' tear in May 2022 further setting him back. Cohen spent most of last season on Carolina's practice squad, where he dealt with a hamstring injury for nearly two months and never earned a promotion to the roster. He'll turn 29 this summer and still has plenty of time to find another team before training camp if he wants to continue pursuing an NFL career. Rotowire.com Today, 8:37 am

    • Still working back from injury
Coach Doug Pederson said Friday that Davis (knee) is dealing an injury and hasn't been able to do much on-field work since signing with the Jaguars, Demetrius Harvey of The Florida Times-Union reports.

Advice: Pederson said Davis, who missed the playoffs last season due to a knee injury suffered Week 18 against the Dolphins, continues to recover from an injury from 2023. He then said the Jaguars' wide receiver picture will become clearer in OTAs. It doesn't sound like there's any real concern about Davis' availability, but fantasy managers would certainly prefer to hear he gets back on the field and starts establishing a rapport with Trevor Lawrence sooner than later. Even with both Calvin Ridley and Zay Jones no longer in Jacksonville, Christian Kirk and rookie first-round pick Brian Thomas represent significant competition for target volume. • Panthers part ways with Tarik Cohen
      Panthers released RB Tarik Cohen.

Advice: Cohen hasn’t taken a regular season snap since 2020, when his season ended with a torn ACL. A torn Achilles in 2022 ended his comeback attempt, but he was able to catch on with the Panthers last September and spent the remainder of the season on their practice squad. He now finds himself without a job after that nine-month stint. Set to turn 29 before the start of the season; it will be interesting to see if another team takes a shot on the vet. • Minshew and O’Connell to compete for starting job
Raiders GM Tom Telesco said Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell are expected to compete for the starting job in training camp.

Advice: This was the presumed next step after the Raiders opted not to select a quarterback in this year’s draft. Playing in a division that includes Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert, it goes without saying that the combination of Minshew/O’Connell is far from ideal, but both quarterbacks were solid in 2023, with Minshew nearly leading the Colts to a playoff berth. In 17 games, Minshew threw for 3305-15-9 last season while leading his team to a 7-6 record over 13 starts. O’Connell became the Raiders full-time starter in Week 9 and led the team to a 5-4 record over that span while throwing for 1905-11-5 in those nine games. Neither quarterback is built for shootouts vs. high-powered offenses, but they’re effective game managers who can give their team a chance to win any game within reach. Head coach Antonio Pierce said O’Connell has “earned the right to get the first snap,” but Minshew will almost certainly get some reps as things progress. Rotoworld Today, 7:11 am

    • Rams don’t want to ‘totally run down’ Williams
Rams GM Les Snead says the team doesn’t want to “totally run down” Kyren Williams this season.

Advice: This quote comes from Snead justifying the selection of Blake Corum in the third round of this year’s draft. Snead said the similarities between the two backs made Corum a desired pick and added that the team felt like they “need to have as many quality runners as possible” due to a 17-game season that could soon move to an 18-game season. For now, it sounds like Williams’ role as the team’s RB1 is secure, but fantasy managers expecting another 37 percent opportunity share, or 68 percent rushing market share, should adjust those expectations. It sounds like Corum will have a chance to contribute meaningful snaps early in the season and could stand to vulture valuable fantasy points from Williams this season. Corum’s value in the short-yardage situations and near the goal-line could give him some significant touchdown upside. Rotoworld Today, 6:33 am

    • Back in action
Mauga (knee) participated in the Raiders' offseason program Wednesday.

Advice: Mauga played in five games in 2023, contributing primarily on special teams. His campaign came to a close prematurely due to a knee injury, but it appears as if he's made a full recovery heading into 2024. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:32 pm

    • Healthy for offseason programs
Brown participated in the Raiders' offseason program in late April.

Advice: Brown played in six games as a rookie in 2022, serving exclusively on special teams. His 2023 campaign ended abruptly after he was placed on injured reserve with an undisclosed issue at the close of training camp, but he'll seemingly enter the new campaign without any lingering issues. • Competing for spot in secondary
Lammons will compete for a roster spot as a backup slot corner during training camp, Kevin Hickey of the Sporting News reports.

Advice: Lammons appeared in four games in 2023 and bounced between the Colts' 53-man roster and practice squad. He ended the season nursing an ankle injury but is healthy again and set to battle for a roster spot in 2024, a context in which he'll face some increased competition from rookie Micah Abraham.
