    • Lions want to use Jahmyr Gibbs downfield, in slot
Lions running backs coach Scottie Montgomery said the team wants to use Jahmyr Gibbs more in the slot and down the field.

Advice: Lions GM Brad Holmes said two weeks ago said the team is ramping up the second-year back for a heftier workload in 2024. Montgomery said the team needs Gibbs “to go from a passing game standpoint is go to the next level. ... I do think there’s a certain difference between being a really efficient check-down versus a great route-runner, a guy that can run all types of choice (routes). We know we’ve seen him do those things. But now can you go into the slot and a little bit more down the field, some intermediate stuff. Can we continue to grow him there, and that’s what we’re trying to do.” This is standard fare for offseason talk of a talented pass-catching running back. Gibbs in 2023 ran 9.2 percent of his routes from the slot. We could see a slight bump in that slot usage but it doesn’t change much about his statistical profile. Rotoworld Friday, 9:06 am

    • Returns to practice
Odunze (hamstring) returned to practice Thursday, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Advice: Odunze was featured in a video from practice catching a contested pass from rookie QB Caleb Williams. With the hamstring tightness behind him, the No. 9 overall pick will continue to build chemistry with Williams while working as the No. 3 receiver for now behind DJ Moore and Keenan Allen. • Kittle (core-muscle) expects to be ready for camp
George Kittle said he underwent core-muscle surgery in the offseason and expects to return to practice by training camp.

Advice: Kittle told reporters he suffered the injury around Week 9 or 10 and played through it for the remainder of the season. He has been out of commission for OTAs but wasn’t concerned about his availability for camp, saying his recovery is on schedule. Kittle topped 1,000 yards for the third time in his career and caught 65 passes despite the injury. He didn’t miss any games outside of the rest week all San Francisco starters got in Week 18. Though his production remains streaky, Kittle showed no signs of slowing in 2023 and remains in the middle of the TE1 pack. Rotoworld Wednesday, 3:03 pm

    • Remains on track for training camp
Kittle has set a goal to be ready for training camp after undergoing core-muscle surgery earlier this offseason, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Advice: Kittle said that he played through the injury for about 10 weeks last season, according to David Lombardi of The Athletic. Although he was hurting, the two-time All-Pro still recorded 65 receptions (on 90 targets) for 1,020 yards and six scores. Even if the 49ers opt to err on the side of caution with Kittle when training camp approaches, he'll remain one of the top fantasy options at tight end heading into 2024. • Absent from OTAs
Chase and teammate Tee Higgins are not present for voluntary OTAs on Tuesday as they continue to negotiate potential contract extensions, Ben Baby of ESPN reports.

Advice: Chase hasn't yet participated in voluntary workouts for Cincinnati this offseason, and he's now eligible for a contract extension. The Bengals picked up his fifth-year option. Higgins, meanwhile, has yet to sign his franchise tender after Cincinnati placed the one-year tag on him back in February. Coach Zac Taylor stated that he's not worried about the absence of either wideout, saying "they'll be ready and focused when it's time to come back." For now, though, Joe Burrow (wrist) will be taking reps without either of his top receivers present. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 12:38 pm

    • Ja’Marr Chase absent from Bengals voluntary OTAs
ESPN’s Ben Baby reports Ja’Marr Chase is absent at the start of Bengals OTAs.

Advice: OL Trent Brown and Tee Higgins are also absent from the voluntary offseason practices. Probably it’s not a big deal that Chase, 24, entering his fourth NFL season, is not in attendance, though it is something to monitor in the summer months. The Bengals in April picked up Chase’s fifth-year option; he’s now signed through the 2025 season, slated to make a guaranteed salary of nearly $5 million this season. The superstar wideout is likely to show up to summer practices if and when the team can hammer out a lucrative long-term deal with him. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:25 am
