Commish Notes

  • Here's a refresher of the league rules... Obviously this is a dynasty, so you keep your entire team roster each year. Each year we will have a four round rookie draft prior to the start of the season.

    TRADING RULES:
    *Trades will be Commissioner's Decision.
That does NOT mean I decide whether or not a trade goes through.
Please refer to the Trade Posting Rules in regards to where and how trades should be accepted or posted.

The way trade veto discussions work is simple:
When a trade is made, if you don't like it, post on the message board and say why you don't like it. The managers making the trade get a chance to explain their reasoning and might dispel your concerns, or it might be a terrible bogus trade that gets vetoed. The process determines the outcome.

If a few people have a problem with a trade and have very strong reasons why it's not good, it may get vetoed. If the vast majority of a league has a problem with a trade, and the people making it don't both have strong reasons why it's fine, it probably gets vetoed.
Lets just talk out trades and figure out if they're unfair together. I think this method prevents people from making snap decisions to click the veto button and allows fair trades a better chance of going through compared to anonymous votes. Regardless, I reserve to make the final decision unless the league is overwhelmingly for or against a trade.

***IF YOU TRADE DRAFT PICKS, PLEASE INCLUDE THEM IN THE ACTUAL TRADE***
This is a dynasty, so the trading of draft picks doesn't actually affect anything, as we're drafting rookies offline, but it does affect how everyone can keep track of what draft picks have been traded. Having every draft pick documented in the "Transactions" tab on the league page is simple and organized. Having draft pick trades buried in message board posts about trades is not simple or organized.
Keep in mind that Yahoo! makes you have an even number of draft picks in a trade, so if you're trading a 1st round pick for Aaron Rodgers, you'd have to get a draft pick in return for Yahoo to process the trade. As long as you choose one from rounds 5-30 it won't affect the rookie draft, so.... do that please.

Again, see the Trade Posting Rule post for an extremely long-winded, overly detailed explanation of the above rule, which I've been posting in every league I've commished every year for over 15 years.

    TANKING RULE: Consolation Bracket Rules:

Starting in 2018 we decided to put a stop to some of the more absurd tanking that's gone on. I watched in 2017 while people purposefully benched all of their stars or left 4 or 5 starting positions empty the last 6 weeks of the season. That's not fun and it's not really fair for teams in a playoff race if their competition is facing tanking teams while they face other competitive teams. The worst example I saw was when someone started tanking in week 2..... Week 2!

To fix that, the consolation playoff bracket is no longer just a meaningless consolation bracket, it's a competition for the 1st overall pick! I understand that can suck if you're the worst team by far and you wind up not getting the first overall pick, but this is supposed to be competition, not who can bench the most players. The NBA has the lottery, we have this.

The bottom 6 teams will face off in a consolation bracket. The 12th and 11th place teams will be guaranteed a top 4 pick regardless of how they fare in the consolation bracket. The final results of the consolation bracket will determine the 1st through 6th picks in the order of the consolation playoff results, with the aforementioned exception to 12th and 11th place. If the 12th and 11th place teams get eliminated in the first round, they'll still get a top 4 pick. I'm typing this multiple times to make sure everyone sees it. If 11th and 12th place get eliminated round 1, the two next lowest teams from the rest of the consolation bracket will get picks 5 and 6. If Yahoo ever gives me the option to give 11th and 12th place a 1st round consolation bracket bye week, that would be perfect, but until then we'll have to roll with what we have. Any final determination when there is a question of which losing team gets bumped from the top 4 to 5th or 6th will be based on total points scored, with the higher total points getting the better pick. Again, this is to encourage competition. It will also give managers something to think about when considering tanking; there might be some potential gain, but there will now be a risk involved, too.
I wish that Yahoo would let me give the 12th and 11th place teams a 1st round bye to make it easy... But that's not currently possible.

If one person has a problem with a trade and nobody else does, but the one person has very strong reasons why it should be vetoed and nobody really has any reason why it's OK, then it might get vetoed.
Basically, we all mostly know each other. Lets just talk out trades and figure out if they're unfair together. The league vote thing has too many problems. This method doesn't let you anonymously click veto just because you're in a bad mood, and if a trade is really terrible, the managers will hear from the league why it's so terrible. Managwers making the trade also get a chance to explain their reasoning, which might change someone's mind about it being unfair. I think this method prevents people from making snap decisions to click the veto button and allows fair trades a better chance of going through. Regardless, I reserve to make the final decision unless the league is overwhelmingly for or against a trade.

I understand that can suck if you're the worst team by far and you wind up not getting the first overall pick, but it also sucks when you're facing a fringe playoff team with half your team on the bench and someone else misses out on the playoffs because they didn't get to face your team the last week.

So, the bottom 6 teams will now face off in a consolation bracket. The 12th and 11th place teams will be guaranteed a top 4 pick. This will basically be the reverse same setup as the championship bracket. The final results of the consolation bracket will determine the 1st through 6th picks.
