  • As expected: Watson requests trade from Texans
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Deshaun Watson has requested to be traded from the Texans.

Advice: It's been long reported that Watson wants out of Houston, but this is the first time his request has been considered "official." Schefter adds that Watson actually hasn’t spoken to new Texans general manager Nick Caserio nor executive Jack Easterby since the former's decision has already been made. With a no-trade clause baked into his deal, the 25-year-old will ultimately choose his own suitor on the market. One after another, Houston's dumbfounding decisions and cronyism in the front office transparently highlight an organization that has no direction or intention of winning in either the near future or long-term, resulting in this decision. Whomever lands Watson will merely take on a team-friendly $10.54 million cap hit in 2021 and have its franchise cornerstone locked up under center through the 2025 season. • HOU eyeing Josh McCown, Lovie Smith as assistants
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Texans are "targeting" Josh McCown and Lovie Smith as assistants.

Advice: The Texans were shredded for giving McCown a head-coaching interview over more qualified candidates, but all signs point to the former quarterback as being a future NFL coach. Being hired as a QBs coach or passing-game coordinator would be a reasonable start. Smith would bring a lot of experience to first-time head coach David Culley, and he's available after being fired by Illinois last December. The Texans have their offensive coordinator in Tim Kelly. • Witten inking 1-day deal with Cowboys and retiring
Former Cowboys and Raiders TE Jason Witten announced his retirement from the NFL after 17 seasons.

Advice: Witten, 39 in May, is signing a one-day contract with the Cowboys to retire as a member of the team he spent his first 16 years with before joining the Raiders for the 2020 season. Witten was out of the league in 2018 when he joined ESPN's Monday Night Football booth, but that was a total disaster for both sides. He came out of his hiatus for two more playing seasons and ends his Hall of Fame career with 1,228 catches for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns. He turned in four 1,000-yard seasons and four others of 850-plus yards, never missing a game from 2004 forward. Witten made 11 Pro Bowls and was a first-team All-Pro twice. Witten made over $76 million in the NFL. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 1:24 pm

  • RapSheet: 'Expect open competition' for Rams at QB
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport's "understanding" is the Rams are "expected to have an open competition" at quarterback in training camp next summer, featuring Jared Goff and John Wolford.

Advice: RapSheet said that's "if" Goff remains on the roster, which is highly likely considering his contract. Wolford started two games for the Rams at the end of the season, "managing" L.A. to a win in Week 17 against the Cardinals, where he went 22-of-38 for 231 scoreless yards and an interception while leading the team in rushing with a 6-56 line. But he was hurt in the Wild Card start against Seattle, and Goff reclaimed the gig. It's clear the Rams aren't satisfied with Goff at all and are now realizing he's holding the team back. But Wolford isn't the answer. The Rams need to start taking their No. 2 QB spot seriously. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:30 am

  • Bud Dupree expects to be ready for training camp
Steelers OLB Bud Dupree (knee) expects to be ready for training camp.

Advice: Dupree tore his ACL in early December. He's ahead of schedule in his rehab, but still seems likely to open camp on the active/PUP list and is questionable for Week 1. After playing last year on the franchise tag, the Steelers' cap situation could force them to move on from Dupree this offseason. Dupree will likely have to settle for another one-year deal to stay in Pittsburgh. The Florida Times Union believes the Jaguars will look to move on from free agent Chris Thompson.

Advice: Thompson played in only eight games before landing on IR with a back injury. Bucs coach Bruce Arians doesn't expect Antonio Brown (knee) to practice this week.

Advice: Brown and SS Antonie Winfield are expected to sit out this week of practice. “I think it’s too early,” Arians said. “Neither one of those guys will probably practice and we’ll see how it rolls out next Tuesday for both of them.” The Bucs are also hoping to get FS Jordan Whitehead (shoulder) back in the next two weeks. • Odell Beckham on track in ACL recovery
Browns GM Andrew Berry said Odell Beckham (knee) is on track in his recovery from ACL surgery.

Advice: Beckham is two months removed from tearing his ACL in Week 7. It's good news that he's setback-free, but Beckham will be sidelined through OTAs and seems unlikely to be ready for the start of training camp. Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said he's "excited" for Beckham's return in 2021, though the Browns figure to explore his market this offseason. • Rams RB Malcolm Brown 'unlikely' to return
The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue believes the Rams are "unlikely to bring back" free agent RB Malcolm Brown.

Advice: Brown was a nice veteran presence for youngsters Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson, but it's time for the baton to be passed. Akers is likely to emerge as a fantasy RB1 in 2021 fantasy drafts while Henderson operates as a low-volume No. 2 back with high-upside as RB insurance. Brown will likely settle for the veteran minimum in free agency and carries no dynasty value as a soon-to-be 28-year-old. Brown's career-high in carries (101) came last season. • Rams 'not expected to' re-sign Everett, Reynolds
The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue reports the Rams are "not expected to" re-sign free agents Gerald Everett and Josh Reynolds.

Advice: Everett is coming off a career-highs in targets (62), catches (41), and receiving yards (417), but the Rams have already invested in Tyler Higbee, who is signed through the 2023 season. Everett, 27, should sign as a low-level starter or high-end backup depending on his landing spot. Through four seasons, Everett is averaging 6.8 yards per target with a 62% catch rate. He's a former second-round pick. As for Reynolds, he'll likely sign as a backup outside receiver. Reynolds has averaged a forgettable 7.2 yards per target through four years. • New Chargers OC compares Ekeler to Kamara, Sproles
Chargers OC Joe Lombardi compared Austin Ekeler to Alvin Kamara, Reggie Bush, and Darren Sproles.

Advice: Lombardi's background is with the Saints, who have utilized their running backs in the pass game better than any team in the modern era. Ekeler's abilities should be maximized under Lombardi who helped turn Sproles, Bush, and Kamara into PPR cheat codes. Lombardi also mentioned using an up-tempo offense and being aggressive on fourth downs, so it's possible that the Chargers will take a leap in 2021. They certainly have the talent on both sides of the ball to do so. Ekeler belongs in the top-six mix in PPR formats. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 4:05 pm

  • 49ers re-sign RB Jeff Wilson to a one-year deal
    49ers re-signed RB Jeff Wilson to a one-year contract.

Advice: Wilson is coming off a 600-yard, six-touchdown rushing season as a rotational back in coach Kyle Shanahan's offense. He entered the season as a backup but started games with Raheem Mostert dealing with lingering injuries. Both Mostert and Wilson are signed through the 2021 season, making this a competition to track during the offseason. It's unclear what the 49ers will do on third downs with both Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon set to be unrestricted free agents. There's a ceiling to chase in this balanced offense. • Chargers OC: Uptempo will be a part of the offense
Chargers OC Joe Lombardi said an uptempo offense will be "a part of what we are building here".

Advice: Lombardi and coach Brandon Staley seem to be on the same page offensively, and it comes down to playing into Justin Herbert's strengths. Lombardi mentions how Herbert is comfortable with playing fast based on his time at Oregon, and Staley has already talked with Lombardi about utilizing a no-huddle offense at times. That would be a welcomed addition to the Chargers offense, one that has lacked creativity and polish in recent seasons. Both Staley and Lombardi have also mentioned how analytics can help dictate situational football (fourth-down decisions, pass/run splits, etc.), something the Chargers have notoriously gone against. Overall, the Chargers' newly assembled coaching staff seems to aligning with a lot of modern-day approaches. The roster is good enough to compete in the playoffs as soon as 2021. Advice: Folk hero Kumerow made six 2020 appearances, catching precisely one pass for one of the league's deeper receiver corps. Naturally, it was a 22-yard touchdown. • Schefter: Teams already initiating Stafford talks
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports teams are "already reaching out" to initiate Matthew Stafford trade talks.

Advice: A trade can't technically be completed until the start of the new league year in March, but it's not uncommon for big-ticket deals to be agreed upon well in advance of free agency. With Deshaun Watson and a host of other starters potentially on the move, it is going to be an unusually explosive quarterback market this winter. So far, the only team has Stafford has been indirectly connected to is the 49ers, who are said to be "monitoring" the situation. 12 days shy of his 33rd birthday, Stafford will have a robust market.  Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 1:41 pm

  • Rams GM declines to endorse Goff as 2021 starter
Speaking Tuesday, Rams GM Les Snead declined to endorse Jared Goff as the team's 2021 starter.

Advice: ESPN's Lindsey Thiry reports Snead "declined to provide a yes/no answer" on Goff's future before "referencing Aaron Rodgers' recent quote about the future being a beautiful mystery." He then said "anything can be done" while nevertheless acknowledging it would be difficult to move on from Goff's albatross contract. Snead joins coach Sean McVay in going out of his way not to endorse his starting quarterback. The Rams have realized what everyone else has, that their offense is hard capped under the No. 1 overall pick of the 2016 draft. The problem is the salary cap, which would be left in smoldering ruins by any potential Goff move. Unless some other team is willing to pay Goff $25.6 million in 2021, there is probably no way the Rams can get out from underneath his deal this offseason, but perhaps they will add legitimate competition and roll with the highest-paid backup in the history of professional sports. • Staley pledges to build offense around Herbert
New Chargers coach Brandon Staley has pledged to build his offense around what Justin Herbert does well.

Advice: Which was basically everything as a rookie. "We want to uniquely shape our offense around Justin Herbert because he is unlike any other quarterback," Staley gushed. "When you study the great quarterbacks in the history of the game they've had systems that have been built for them." This seemingly obvious point is still lost on so many coaches. Tailor your offense to what your players, especially your quarterback, do well. Despite being a defensive-minded head coach, Staley is a former quarterback, while he just spent a year learning under offensive maestro Sean McVay. Best laid plans have a way of going awry in the NFL, but from the outside, Staley seems to be a home run hire.   Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 11:02 am

  • Brown (knee) expected to play in Super Bowl
Antonio Brown (knee) is expected to be ready for the Super Bowl against the Chiefs.

Advice: Brown was inactive in the NFC title game after missing the entire week of practice headed into the game. He now has two weeks to get right before the Bucs face off against Kansas City in the Bucs' home-game Super Bowl. Brown drew three targets in the Wild Card round against Washington -- catching two balls for 49 yards and a touchdown -- and three targets against the Saints in the Divisional Round before exiting with the knee injury. Against the Chiefs in Week 12, Brown caught two of three targets for 11 yards. • Watson wants out HOU regardless of who new HC is
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Texans QB Deshaun Watson's thinking "is not expected to change" based on who Houston hires as their next head coach.

Advice: Watson has made his grievances with the organization known and an attempt to placate him with a specific head coach is apparently off the table. A Watson trade is looking increasingly likely by the day. The Jets are reportedly his preferred landing spot with Miami coming in second. Both teams have a young quarterback who could be moved plus a bevy of first-round draft picks. Watson thinks highly of New York's new head coach, Robert Saleh, and wants to play under him for Gang Green. Watson's presence would be a massive upgrade for the New York fantasy options. However, the lack of talent at receiver and tight end does make the landing spot less desirable for Watson's fantasy outlook.  Rotoworld.com Sunday, 9:52 am

  • Rapoport: Bucs want Antonio Brown back for 2021
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Buccaneers want WR Antonio Brown back for the 2021 season.

Advice: Brown is out for the Bucs' NFC Championship game against the Packers so he could miss their final game of the year if Tampa Bay doesn't come out on top. Regardless, Brown has played well after missing over a year of football. He closed out the regular season with 483 yards and four scores on 45 receptions while playing in just eight games. Browns and Chris Godwin are free agents this year so it's possible that the Bucs wanting to bring Brown back is a sign that the team is willing to let Godwin walk. However, the market for Brown could be tepid given his recent history of off-field issues and he is beloved by Tom Brady so his status could also have little effect on Godwin. If Godwin does walk and Brown stays, the ADP spike for Brown would reach critical mass. Rotoworld.com Sunday, 6:20 am

  • 49ers will 'monitor' Stafford trade situation
The 49ers will monitor the Lions' potential trade of Matthew Stafford.

Advice: It's not quite a shock that the Niners could enter the fray for Stafford's services. Jimmy Garoppolo, who has two years left on his deal and is slated to make a whopping $25.5 million next season, has been inconsistent -- and sometimes downright bad -- in four injury-riddled seasons with the Niners. With play makers like George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel, Stafford could make Kyle Shanahan's offense a dangerous unit. The team could restructure Stafford's contract to reduce the cap hit if they're able to acquire him. Stafford, 32, is sure to have a handful of serious suitors in the coming weeks and months. • Report: Lions will trade Stafford this offseason
NFL Network's Tom Pelissero said the Lions and Matthew Stafford have agreed to part ways this offseason.

Advice: It appears the team won't fight to keep Stafford aboard for a full rebuild. Pelissero reports Stafford and the team made a mutual decision that the Lions would trade away their franchise QB this offseason after 12 seasons. QB-needy teams like the 49ers, Washington, Panthers, Colts, Jets, and Broncos will probably show interest in acquiring Stafford, though the Lions' price isn't known. Stafford has two years and $43 million left on his contract, "a bargain price for a quarterback who is still playing at a high level," Pelissero said. Stafford will be a marked upgrade for the pass catchers on whichever team he lands on this offseason. Detroit is (very) likely to use their No. 7 NFL draft pick to select Stafford's successor, and perhaps move up even further to secure one of the draft's top signal callers. The trade would likely happen before the fifth day of the 2021 league year in March, when Stafford is due a $10 million roster bonus. Rotoworld.com Saturday, 3:10 pm

  • Report: Jets emerge as Watson's No. 1 choice
The Jets are Deshaun Watson's preferred trade partner.

Advice: The rightfully disgruntled franchise QB prefers the Jets "because they hired Robert Saleh to be their coach and Watson values Saleh so much he wanted the Texans to interview him for their vacant head coach job," according to the Miami Herald's Armando Salguero. The Dolphins, per Salguero, rank second on Watson's trade wish list. Recent reports out of Houston indicate it's a matter of when -- not if -- Watson is dealt away after the team's string of management mishaps that alienated the cornerstone of the franchise. Saleh has been complimentary of Sam Darnold, lauding the QB's "unbelievable arm talent," but has stopped short of naming him the Jets' 2021 starter. Darnold's shot at the starting gig would vanish the minute Watson is dealt to New York. Watson -- who has yet to officially request a trade -- would be a giant upgrade for all Jets pass catchers, including Jamison Crowder, Chris Herndon, and Denzel Mims,  Rotoworld.com Saturday, 11:17 am

Advice: It's the first interview for McCown, who was on the team's active roster at the end of the year and, oddly enough, remains under contract with the team through 2021. "He knows what he's doing." It's uncertain whether Brown would be limited against the Packers if he's able to play through the knee issue, making him a dicey DFS option at best. • Report: McVay and Goff need 'marriage counseling'
NFL Network's Steve Wyche reports one person close to the situation said coach Sean McVay and Jared Goff's relationship "needs marriage counseling" this offseason.

Advice: Another person described the relationship as "not great." McVay seems fed up with Goff's ups and downs, especially when the downs are basement-level play and the ups are merely mediocre. Goff held the Rams back this season, but taking away his deep threats in Sammy Watkins and Brandin Cooks didn't do him any favors, as guys like Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Josh Reynolds aren't field stretchers. McVay failed to endorse Goff as the Rams' 2021 starter, and there's a sense the Rams will bring in a more capable backup to push Goff this summer. • Stefanski 'excited' for Odell Beckham's '21 return
Speaking Monday, coach Kevin Stefanski said he's "excited" for Odell Beckham's (knee) return in 2021.

Advice: “I texted with him this morning. I know he’s working really hard to get better in his rehab. I’m excited to get him back here,” Stefanski said. “I know it was not easy for him being away from his teammates, especially as these games got bigger and into the playoffs. I know he definitely wanted to be a part of it.” After OBJ tore his ACL in Week 7, there was wide speculation the Browns could trade him ahead of the 2021 season, but Stefanski sounds like a guy ready to have his playmaking wideout back with the club. The Browns went 11-5 and won a playoff game mostly without OBJ, riding their running game and a more relaxed Baker Mayfield over the second half of the year. Mayfield likely didn't feel the pressure to force the ball to OBJ. Beckham has three years left on his contract but he has no guaranteed money left on the deal.
