• Kenneth Dixon (meniscus) out for the season
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Ravens RB Kenneth Dixon's meniscus injury required a full repair, and he will be out for the season.

Advice: Dixon was expected to need only a "trim," but a full repair was required upon closer inspection. It's a brutal blow for the 2016 fourth-rounder, who had a golden path to playing time once he returned from his four-game suspension in Week 5. It leaves the Ravens in a lurch, with only pass-catcher Danny Woodhead and fourth-year plodder Terrance West available as legitimate options. We suppose Buck Allen could also get another look. The Ravens could be forced to dip into the wafer-thin free agent market, which is currently "led" by Rashad Jennings and DeAngelo Williams. Still only 23, Dixon is worth stashing in Dynasty leagues, but he's now little more than a 50-50 proposition. Woodhead, who could seize goal-line work, is the preferred Ravens own, even in standard leagues. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:20 pm

  • Allen Robinson says he's had extension talks
Contract-year WR Allen Robinson says he's had extension talks with the Jaguars.

Advice: With Brandon Linder locked up, the Jags can turn their attention to their No. 1 receiver. It's an awkward time for Robinson, who is coming off a down season, but he's reasoning he still has plenty of leverage as a 24-year-old wideout (in August) just two years removed from a 1,400-yard season. If a deal doesn't get done this summer, the franchise tag looms for 2018. In a disaster scenario, A-Rob plays out his rookie deal and has another disappointing campaign, leaving him in Alshon Jeffery-esque limbo. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:13 pm

  • Cowboys will not re-sign Lucky Whitehead
The Cowboys have no plans to re-sign free agent WR/KR Lucky Whitehead even though his petty larceny arrest was the result of mistaken identity.

Advice: "We made a decision," executive vice president Stephen Jones said. "We're moving on." Jones talks like Whitehead did something wrong, which he didn't. It appears the Cowboys were simply looking for a reason to cut Whitehead. It's an extremely poor look, one that will become all the more absurd the next time the Cowboys pass on disciplining a player for an off-the-field incident. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:25 pm

  • Cam Newton reports to camp at 246 pounds
Cam Newton reported to Panthers camp at 246 pounds.

Advice: Newton is listed at 245, but has played closer to 260 for the majority of his career. Coach Ron Rivera is a fan of the weight loss, which could increase Newton's quicks while still providing plenty of armor against oncoming rushers. Newton will be limited through the early days of camp, but is fully on track for Week 1. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:22 pm

  • Panthers waived/injured WR Charles Johnson
    Panthers waived/injured WR Charles Johnson.

Advice: Johnson underwent surgery on his right knee. If he gets healthy in 2017, he'll be waived with an injury settlement. A onetime fantasy darling, Johnson has caught just 29 passes over the past two seasons after his false 2014 breakout. Already 28, he's running out of time to live up to his promise. • Cousins dominant when targeting Reed
Kirk Cousins has a 121.4 quarterback rating when targeting Jordan Reed over the past two seasons.

Advice: That's on 201 attempts. Even on a small-sample size, that's a jaw-dropping number. Speaking earlier this offseason, coach Jay Gruden said "the offense runs through" Reed. Even with his health an ever-present question, Reed is an excellent pick at his current 48.4 ADP. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:54 pm

  • Rivera: Kelvin Benjamin makes weight for camp
Speaking Tuesday, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Kelvin Benjamin is "where he needs to be" weight-wise.

Advice: The Panthers put Benjamin on blast during the offseason, but he got the message. Despite the weight issues and a disappointing 2016, Benjamin is still the Panthers' No. 1 receiver. If he can avoid Eddie Lacy status, he's a touchdown scorer who should produce as a WR2/3. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:23 pm

  • Jets expected to keep three quarterbacks
ESPN New York projects the Jets to keep three quarterbacks, but believes Bryce Petty could be in "some trouble" if he's out-played by Christian Hackenberg this summer.

Advice: That's not a realistic scenario, so it appears the Jets will be keeping three quarterbacks. It's not the best use of resources when you get to keep only 53 players, but the tanking Jets have spots to spare behind brittle veteran Josh McCown. It's quite possible all three quarterbacks make starts in 2017. Rotoworld.com Today, 11:52 am

  • Ex-Browns, Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins retiring
Ex-Browns and Bengals WR Andrew Hawkins has told the Patriots he's retiring.

Advice: He's going to pursue a Ph.D. in economics. The longtime Ohio slot man was on the outside looking in of the Patriots' 53-man roster, as the team's top-five receivers were already set. Often unheralded, Hawkins' effectiveness had been on the wane. He turned 30 in March 2016. A 2008 UDFA, Hawkins hangs up his cleats with 209 receptions, all of which came from 2011-16. • Charges dropped against ex-Cowboy Whitehead
All charges stemming from ex-Cowboys WR/KR Lucky Whitehead's petty larceny case have been dropped.

Advice: This is a bad look for the Cowboys, who instantly cut Whitehead when news of the (false) accusation broke. The warrant for Whitehead's arrest was "rescinded" when Virginia police discovered they "had the wrong guy." Whitehead was a largely-ineffective gadget player/special teamer, anyway, but you can be sure the media is going to let the Cowboys have it, particularly in light of their unflinching stance that Ezekiel Elliott is innocent of multiple far-more-sinister alleged crimes. NFL.com reports Greg Olsen will play out his contract.

Advice: Olsen also said, "after (ex-GM Dave) Gettleman was fired he did not want to be a further distraction." Despite his slow contract negotiations probably contributing toward Gettleman's firing, Olsen is now oddly accepting his current contract. As the most reliable component of the Panthers' offense and one of the NFL's top tight ends Olsen certainly deserves to be paid as such. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:55 am

  • Skins coaches keep talking up WR Ryan Grant
Redskins WRs coach Ike Hilliard continued to talk up fourth-year WR Ryan Grant at the start of training camp.

Advice: The Redskins had a rift over Grant when Scot McCloughan was still GM; McCloughan preferred speedier, more athletic Rashad Ross, while Grant was a coaches' pet and remains so. "I'm easily Ryan Grant's biggest fan," said Hilliard. "He's always been our best pure route runner out of everyone, even with Pierre (Garcon) and DJax (DeSean Jackson) here." Advice: The new 49ers brass went as far as to openly admit they tried trading McDonald before, during, and after the draft. The 49ers have "already identified" rookie George Kittle "as a legitimate red-zone option," and are expected to give Kittle every opportunity to beat out McDonald for the starting job. • Kenneth Dixon is undergoing meniscus surgery
Suspended RB Kenneth Dixon will undergo meniscus surgery on Tuesday.

Advice: The standard timeline for a torn meniscus is 6-8 weeks depending on the severity of the tear. While Dixon is already suspended the first four games for violating the league's policy on PEDs, having to return from meniscus surgery is another barrier on his path to playing time. Suffering his third knee injury in 12 months -- he injured and later aggravated a multi-week MCL sprain last season -- Dixon's longevity may be in question. Dixon can be scratched off fantasy draft cheatsheets while Terrance West and Danny Woodhead maintain job security entering the season. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:36 am

Advice: It's a good sign after Williams was revealed to have undergone a rare offseason knee surgery. Cowboys waived WR Lucky Whitehead.

Advice: Charged with petty larceny in Virginia last month, Whitehead then missed a court date. His agent denies Whitehead was even in Virginia when the incident allegedly took place, but the Cowboys are taking a stand. (For once.) Greg Olsen will report to Panthers training camp on time Tuesday.

Advice: Olsen considered a holdout due to dissatisfaction with his contract, but the Panthers are doling out money now that Marty Hurney has replaced Dave Gettleman as GM. Their first order of business was extending RG Trai Turner, and Olsen is likely now a priority. It's believed so-far-failed contract talks with Olsen and WLB Thomas Davis were at the root of Gettleman's ouster. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 2:16 pm

  • Cowboys' Whitehead faces 'larceny' charges
Cowboys WR Lucky Whitehead was charged with petty larceny in Virginia last month, and missed a July court date.

Advice: Whitehead is accused of stealing less than $200 worth of goods from a convenience store. He has another hearing on Aug. 10. It's yet another off-the-field headache for the Cowboys, but we know how they handle those. Whitehead is unlikely to face a team-imposed suspension. His lawyer will likely somehow clear up the missed court date kerfuffle. A core special teamer and gadget player, Whitehead touched the ball 13 times last season. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:15 am

Coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday that Cam Newton (shoulder) is throwing to teammates in summer workouts in Baltimore.

Advice: "Apparently his shoulder is fine," said Rivera. Newton did some light throwing at last month's minicamp, but it sounds like he's ramped it up in the month-plus of off time between then and next week's training camp, where he should come back at or near 100 percent. • Gettleman 'not interested' in Olsen extension
The Charlotte Observer reports fired Panthers GM Dave Gettleman was "not interested" in giving disgruntled TE Greg Olsen an extension.

Advice: Per reporter Joseph Person, Gettleman found it unnecessary since Olsen was just given a three-year, $22 million extension in 2015. Olsen has been making noise about a holdout, and owner Jerry Richardson seems to have grown sensitive to the perception that Gettleman was cold-hearted with veteran players. It's true that he was, but it's also true that it's a necessary evil for any winning NFL franchise. Olsen's odds of getting extended are much greater than they were 24 hours ago. • Rosenhaus: Olsen still 'undecided' on holdout
Agent Drew Rosenhaus said a decision hasn’t been made on if Greg Olsen will hold out of training camp.

Advice: Players under Rosenhaus rarely skip camp, but Olsen has a strong case as one of the more underpaid tight ends in the league ($6.5M annually). Olsen has a lower salary than Charles Clay, and ranks 12th in guaranteed money. The Panthers don’t have much leverage with Ed Dickson their only proven backup. Olsen would be subject to $40,000 per day in fines if he holds out. Rotoworld.com Jul 15, 6:04 am
