Slated for a Seventh-Place Finish, Mr. Football Needs Work

Draft Summary

Hopefully just because this draft was average, Mr. Football won't purchase a muscle car or jacked-up truck to overcompensate. And hey, with the right breaks, maybe this team can reach the playoffs. They are projected to finish seventh in Family matters League with a record of 7-6-0 (1,951 points). They stocked up on pass-catching weapons early on, using three of their first five selections to pick up WRs Odell Beckham Jr. (first round), Sammy Watkins (second round), and Doug Baldwin (fourth round). They also built the worst group of RBs in the league, as they added Doug Martin, DeMarco Murray, and Spencer Ware.

Not bad, but you've still got room for improvement. Becoming a Toyota Hall Of Famer would certainly qualify. Nominate yourself now.

Whether by good fortune or well-planned strategy, Mr. Football has secured a favorable bye week schedule for their superstars. Of their top five players in projected points, none share a common off week. Based on their opponents' projected points, they have one of the hardest slates. Along with having the second-most grueling overall schedule, Mr. Football also has the toughest first four games of the season.

Draft Notes

  • QB Controversy?

Mr. Football may have to rely on a Ouija board each week. Their top-drafted QB (Philip Rivers) and second-drafted QB (Kirk Cousins) have fairly similar seasonal point projections.

  • Close to the Vest

Mr. Football was focused on a squad with minimal risk, grabbing nine "low-risk" players out of 15 picks.

  • Team of Champions

Mr. Football is rocking a team of fantasy MVPs. Last season, three of their players were among the top-20 players that were on the most first-place fantasy teams (Odell Beckham Jr., Doug Martin, and Gary Barnidge).

  • Big D

Mr. Football elected to go with two DEFs instead of loading up at other spots.

  • The Heist Is On

The other league managers passed over a diamond in the rough. According to ADP, Mr. Football got a steal in snatching Stephen Gostkowski in the ninth round (99th overall pick vs. ADP of 76.7).

  • Digging Deep

Spencer Ware is owned in only 5% of all Yahoo! leagues, but will surely reward Mr. Football for their faith! Or not.

Player Analysis

    • O. Beckham Jr., WR
    • Round 1, Pick 3
Does Odell Beckham Jr. Enjoy Fajitas?

Because his total yardage figures are sizzling. Beckham Jr. is projected to rank eighth in the league with 1,537 all-purpose yards.

    • Sammy Watkins, WR
    • Round 2, Pick 22
Which Do You Want First, the Good News or the Bad?

Despite being an above-average player at his position, Sammy Watkins was the weakest value pick of the round.

    • Doug Martin, RB
    • Round 3, Pick 27
    If it Ain't Broke

Do fix it? Laughing in the face of decades of fantasy tradition, Mr. Football didn't grab their first RB (Doug Martin) until the third round.

    • Doug Baldwin, WR
    • Round 4, Pick 46
    Rethinking That One

Doug Baldwin went with the 46th pick, but is projected to fall outside of the top-30 in the NFL in both receiving TDs (33rd) and receiving yards (31st) with 6.3 and 955 respectively.

    • Philip Rivers, QB
    • Round 6, Pick 70
It's a Bold Strategy Cotton, Let's See if it Pays Off

Philip Rivers has an ADP of only 83.4 across all Yahoo! leagues, and wasn't quite worth the 70th overall pick.

Best Available

There are three positions that Mr. Football could look to upgrade, including RB, which looks like their biggest area of need.

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
