Despite a Set of Beast RBs, Zach's Swell Team Needs Some Help

Draft Summary

Entering the draft with the fifth overall pick, the expectations were high for Zach's Swell Team. Then they drafted. Those expectations quickly vanished with a projected 10th-place finish in Yahoo Public 743787 League at 1-13-0 (1,387 points). They used a conservative plan early to fill out their lineup, selecting QB Drew Brees (45th overall), RBs David Johnson (5th) and C.J. Anderson (25th), and WRs Brandin Cooks (16th) and Eric Decker (36th). They also built one of the worst groups of WRs in the league, as they have Cooks, Decker, and Jordan Matthews on the roster.

Yikes. At least it can't get any worse. In fact, if you nominate yourself for the Toyota Hall Of Fame, you'll be an official nominee. Feel better?

Zach's Swell Team should use Week 13 to consider life's deeper mysteries, like why don't the pants worn by Dr. Bruce Banner rip when he transforms into the Hulk? It's better to think about that than pay attention to fantasy football. They have three players and the most projected fantasy points on bye that week. Based on their opponents' projected points, they have the hardest schedule. Along with the most taxing overall schedule, both the first four games and last four games of the season are about league-average difficulty for Zach's Swell Team.

Draft Notes

  • Maybe You Should Add Tony Gonzalez While You're At It

Zach's Swell Team must have missed the point of drafting a back-up. In Week 13, both Delanie Walker and Gary Barnidge will be on bye.

  • A Talented Trio

Zach's Swell Team has three positions on their roster that are stronger than the league's average (RB, TE, and QB).

  • Going Out with a Whimper

Zach's Swell Team didn't end the night the way they might have liked, winding up with the fewest projected points in the league over the second half of the draft.

  • Defense Wins Championships?

Zach's Swell Team chose to go with two DEFs instead of loading up at other spots.

  • Gary the Great

Drafting for last year's results is risky, but among all TEs in 2015, Barnidge ranked fourth in both TDs and yardage, third in receptions, and second in targets.

  • Dual-Threat Dynamo

Marcus Mariota can deliver fantasy glory to Zach's Swell Team with his arm and his legs. Mariota has 378 projected rushing yards, and ranks fifth among QBs in that category.

Player Analysis

    • David Johnson, RB
    • Round 1, Pick 5
    Advanced Math

If Zach's Swell Team had a nickel for every time David Johnson is projected to touch the ball this season, they'd have 313 nickels.

    • C.J. Anderson, RB
    • Round 3, Pick 25
Which Do You Want First, the Good News or the Bad?

Despite being an above-average player at his position, the selection of C.J. Anderson had less value than any other pick of the round.

    • Drew Brees, QB
    • Round 5, Pick 45

Zach's Swell Team drafted the most explosive QB in the league in Drew Brees. He's projected to drop bombs on DBs this year, to lead NFL QBs in plays over 40 yards with 12.5 and TDs over 40 yards with 4.8.

    • J. Matthews, WR
    • Round 6, Pick 56
    Taking a Chance

With their sixth-round pick, Zach's Swell Team threw caution to the wind. They took Jordan Matthews at pick number 56 despite an ADP of 70.9 across all Yahoo! leagues.

    • Delanie Walker, TE
    • Round 7, Pick 65
    The Titan to Target

Walker led all TEs in both targets (133) and receptions (94) last year, and received double-digit targets in seven of the 15 games in which he played.

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
