  • Titans re-signed FB Khair Blasingame
Titans re-signed FB Khari Blasingame to a one-year contract.

Advice: Blasingame was an exclusive rights free agent. The 24-year-old has appeared in 21 games over the last two seasons, turning 10 targets into 8-93 with zero rushing attempts on a total of 233 snaps in that span. Saturday, 6:54 am

  • Ty Montgomery re-signs with Saints
Saints re-signed RB Ty Montgomery to a one-year contract.

Advice: The deal includes a $137,500 signing bonus. Montgomery was a healthy scratch in 10-of-16 games. He ran for 105 yards on 18 carries in a Week 17 spot appearance and had five touches in the Divisional Round loss to Tampa. Montgomery provides the cap-strapped Saints depth at running back, receiver, and kick returner. • Kingsbury confident Chase Edmonds can be lead back
Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury said the coaching staff is confident Chase Edmonds can serve as the team's primary running back.

Advice: Kingsbury said the team sees Edmonds as a potential "bell cow" back a couple weeks before Kenyan Drake becomes a free agent. With Drake sidelined last year in Week 9, Edmonds took 25 carries for a mere 70 yards against Miami. He didn't see more than 11 carries in a game for the rest of the year, struggling with various injuries along the way. “We all understand that he’s unfortunately been nicked up a couple times, which we want to keep him on the field," Kingsbury said. "But we have all the confidence in the world in Chase and him being able to be the bell cow if that’s how this plays out.” It's clear Cardinals see Edmonds as a capable pass catcher out of the backfield. He saw 67 targets in 2020 -- fourth most on the team and fifth most among all running backs. If Drake departs via free agency, it would be presumptuous to assume Edmonds would inherit a bell cow role. Friday, 5:06 am

  • Chiefs FB Anthony Sherman retires after 10 seasons
Chiefs FB Anthony Sherman has announced his retirement from the NFL after 10 seasons.

Advice: A free agent, 32-year-old Sherman was not expected to be re-signed. A 2011 fifth-round pick of the Cardinals, Sherman spent the past eight years as Andy Reid's lead blocker in Kansas City. Sherman hangs up his cleats with 94 career touches, just four of which came in 2020. His high points were 2013 and 2017, where he handled the ball 20 times a piece. Despite that lack of official touches, being an NFL fullback is a brutally grinding business, even on limited snaps. Thursday, 3:26 pm

  • Broncos GM 'wants' Phillip Lindsey back
Broncos GM George Paton said he "wants" restricted free agent RB Phillip Lindsay back for 2021.

Advice: Patton said they will be applying a tender on Lindsay but the level hasn't been determined. Another team could slide in and sign Lindsay if the Broncos get loose with their evaluation, but the most likely scenario is Lindsay returning as Melvin Gordon's sidekick. He battled various injuries in 2020, ultimately landing him on injured reserve. Thursday, 11:49 am

  • Vikings 'definitely' want to bring back RB Boone
St. Paul Pioneer Press' Chris Tomasson reports the Vikings "definitely" want to keep RB Mike Boone.

Advice: Boone is a restricted free agent, so the Vikings are deciding which, if any, tender they will apply on their backup running back. Either way, it's likely that Boone returns as the No. 3 running back behind Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison. Ameer Abdullah is a free agent. Thursday, 11:36 am

  • Pack GM: Franchise tag an option for Aaron Jones
Speaking Tuesday, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst said the franchise tag is an option for impending free agent Aaron Jones.

Advice: "It's very much case by case," Gutekunst said after maligning that there are "usually better ways to avoid it." 26 with his one real chance to get paid as an NFLer, Jones is not going to be handing out hometown discounts. That means the tag will be all but inevitable if the Pack want to keep him, either as a one-year stopgap or as a stepping stone to a long-term deal before July's deadline. Unlike some positions, the tag is highly affordable from a team perspective for running backs, checking in around $8 million. Tuesday, 12:22 pm

  • Texans keep David Johnson with restructured deal
David Johnson has agreed to a restructured contract for 2021.

Advice: Originally due $7.95 million, Johnson has reduced his base contract but agreed to an increase in guaranteed money. He will bring home $4.25 million, with another $1.75 million possible through incentives. It's not a bad deal for a 29-year-old back who mostly struggled last season before finishing stronger down the stretch. With Duke Johnson all but certain to walk in free agency, David could have a more locked-in three-down role in 2021. The next question becomes who will be his quarterback. Johnson should be regarded as a low-end RB2 in early-spring fantasy drafts. The ceiling just isn't there anymore. Tuesday, 12:04 pm

  • Steelers 'unlikely' to bring back James Conner
ESPN's Brooke Pryor reports the Steelers are "unlikely" to re-sign James Conner.

Advice: With the team (probably) letting Pittsburgh favorite Conner walk about four seasons, Pryor said the team could fill their RB1 spot with an early-round pick in this spring's NFL Draft. Conner, who will be 26 in May, should have multiple suitors this offseason. Probably he won't be anyone's idea of a locked-in No. 1 running back though. Taking a back in the first round would be a departure from how the team usually conducts its drafts. The Steelers have used their past seven first-round picks on defensive players, including five linebackers. Tuesday, 8:44 am

  • 'Shock' if Dolphins don't find new feature RB
ESPN's Cameron Wolfe reports it would be "a shock if the Dolphins don't come away with a new feature back this offseason."

Advice: Wolfe said Alabama's Najee Harris and North Carolina's Javonte Williams would be "tantalizing" options for the Dolphins, who have the No. 3 and No. 18 picks in the spring's NFL Draft. Miami could also pursue a potential feature back in free agency. The Dolphins have been linked to free-agent-to-be Aaron Jones, and Wolfe mentioned Leonard Fournette and Le'Veon Bell as potential veterans who would pair with a rookie back. Gaskin, who acquitted himself nicely as a starter in 2020 -- averaging 87.6 total yards per game in five early-season starts -- is looking more like a depth option in 2021. Tuesday, 6:27 am

  • Boston Scott among PHI's exclusive free agents
Eagles tendered RB Boston Scott, LB Alex Singleton, and WR Greg Ward as exclusive free agents.

Advice: This means Scott, Ward, and Singleton can only negotiate with the Eagles this offseason. Scott made four starts for Miles Sanders in 2020, but was limited to 29 carries when he wasn’t starting. Doug Pederson's regime clearly liked Scott in the team's backfield; it remains to be seen how Nick Sirianni's staff will regard Scott. Ward, a former quarterback, has served as Philly's No. 1 receiver through large swaths of the past two seasons. Mar 1, 8:21 am

  • LeSean McCoy plans to plays in 2021
Impending free agent LeSean McCoy said he plans to play next season.

Advice: McCoy wants to sign with a contender or somewhere he can serve as veteran depth. There’s unlikely to be much interest after McCoy looked washed in the 10 games he appeared in last year, but with Super Bowls in back-to-back seasons, some team may be willing to give him a non-guaranteed deal. McCoy turns 32 in July. Feb 27, 8:40 am

  • Texans want to keep David Johnson at lower salary
Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson reports the Texans want to keep David Johnson for 2021 but at a lower salary.

Advice: Johnson is set to make $8.5 million in 2021, but the Texans can save $6.4 million against the cap by releasing him. If D.J. became a free agent, he certainly wouldn't sign for more than the $8.5 million he's scheduled to make, so it makes sense for the two parties to agree to a paycut and enter the season as the unquestioned starter. Assuming Johnson returns, he'll have RB2 appeal if Deshaun Watson stays and doesn't sit out. If Watson is traded or sits out, Johnson will struggle for top-24 production. He's a classic boom-bust RB2/3 in early fantasy drafts with Duke Johnson out of the way. The Texans' first pick in the 2021 NFL Draft isn't until Round 3, so Johnson is unlikely to face rookie competition next year. It all comes down to Watson's situation. Feb 26, 3:37 pm

  • The purge continues: Texans release Duke Johnson
    Texans released RB Duke Johnson.

Advice: The move saves the Texans around $5 million in cap space for 2021. Johnson played in 27 games for Houston and rushed for 645 yards and three rushing scores. An excellent pass catcher, Johnson reeled in 72 balls for 659 receiving yards and four receiving touchdowns during his two seasons with the Texans. Johnson was relegated to a situational back in the Houston offense, seeing double digit carries just three times in two years. He averaged a mere 3.59 targets per contest in 27 games with the Texans, much to the frustration of Duke Johnson truthers everywhere. Johnson didn't stand much chance of making the 2021 roster with Houston entering full rebuild mode. Johnson, who will be 28 in September, should catch on with a team in need of an experienced third down back. Feb 26, 9:42 am
