  • Jeff Wilson (ankle) officially a DNP on Thursday
Jeff Wilson (ankle) officially did not practice Thursday.

Advice: That is two days in a row reporters have said Wilson was limited only for him to be listed as a DNP on the official injury report. His status does not really matter with Elijah Mitchell (knee) returning to practice on Thursday, but Wilson appears to be truly questionable for the NFC Championship Game.  NBCSportsEDGE.com 51 minutes ago

  • Report: McDaniels has 'high opinion' of Derek Carr
Mike Silver reports prospective Raiders coach Josh McDaniels has a "high opinion" of Derek Carr.

Advice: The same is apparently true of potential GM Dave Ziegler. Infamously, McDaniels immediately went to war with Jay Cutler when he took the Broncos' job in 2009, eventually trading him to the Bears. Liking Carr would be a step in the right direction, but it's not as simple as that. Two months shy of his 31st birthday, Carr has only one year left on his deal, and is surely desperate for an extension. McDaniels literally drafted Tim Tebow, so he is willing to get harebrained at quarterback despite his years in the Tom Brady penthouse. We would not consider the Carr matter settled until the draft has come and gone. That is if McDaniels gets the job at all, of course.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 3:25 pm

  • Van Jefferson (knee) returns to practice Thursday
Van Jefferson (knee) returned to practice on Thursday.

Advice: He was officially "limited," but that is good enough to put him on track to suit up against the Niners. Jefferson had two catches for 29 yards in the Divisional Round and should be regarded as probable to play in the NFC Championship game as long as nothing pops up on Friday.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 1:03 pm

  • Jeff Wilson (ankle) upgraded to limited Thursday
Jeff Wilson (ankle) got in a limited practice on Thursday.

Advice: Wilson's recovery from an ankle injury sustained on special teams during the Divisional Round seems to be going well. • Elijah Mitchell back at Niners practice Thursday
Elijah Mitchell (knee) returned to 49ers practice on Thursday, getting in a "limited" session.

Advice: The 49ers are just managing Mitchell's reps. He is in zero danger of missing or being limited for Sunday's NFC title tilt, and is close to an iron-clad lock to once again clear 20 touches, something he has done in seven consecutive games.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 12:05 pm

  • Beat: Jacobs fifth-year option could be tough?
The Athletic's Tashan Reed notes that he expects the fifth-year option for Josh Jacobs to be "a tough choice," this offseason.

Advice: "Jacobs has been productive, but he's already shown wear and tear and plays a very replaceable position," Reed adds. The fifth-year option would be for $10.1 million. Jacobs hasn't played a full season in any of his three campaigns to date, and has been notably worse from a yards-per-attempt standpoint since his rookie season. The Raiders don't have a GM at this point, but it wouldn't necessarily be surprising if they decided to not invest more money in Jacobs.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 11:33 am

  • Beat: Not feasible to move on from Tannehill
Ben Arthur of The Tennessean reports that it's "not feasible" for the Titans to move on from Ryan Tannehill's contract this offseason.

Advice: Releasing Tannehill would trigger a $57.4 million dead cap charge, while trading him would leave a $29 million fully guaranteed base salary to his next team. We're a little surprised to see Tannehill so squarely on the hot seat after a season that had him throwing to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine and left without Derrick Henry for months, but a three-pick playoff flop will do that to you. It will be much easier for the Titans to move on from Tannehill -- if they want to -- in the 2023 offseason.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 11:19 am

  • Roethlisberger officially retires after 18 seasons
Ben Roethlisberger is officially retiring after 18 seasons.

Advice: The No. 11 overall pick of the legendary 2004 draft out of small-school Miami of Ohio, Roethlisberger wasn't a "can't miss" prospect, but the Steelers won 14 straight games his rookie year to finish 15-1 and reach the AFC Championship Game. They lost to the Patriots but finished the job the following year, defeating the Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. They would go on to reach two more championship games with Roethlisberger under center, hoisting one more Lombardi. Roethlisberger never won MVP or received first-team All-Pro honors — that will happen when your career overlaps with Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers — but he retires as a sure-fire Hall-of-Famer who is currently fifth all time in career passing at 64,088. That is the highest total for any player whose entire career came with one team. Ben also had a top-five single-game effort with 522 yards in 2014, and top-10 single season effort in 2018. Although Roethlisberger was never the same after a major 2019 elbow injury, he still finished his career with a playoff start at age 39. The Steelers' post-Roethlisberger plans are unclear, though it is impossible to believe they will involve Mason Rudolph as anything other than a strict bridge option.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Yesterday, 7:09 am

  • Josh Gordon re-signs with KC practice squad
Chiefs signed WR Josh Gordon to their practice squad.

Advice: Kansas City waived Gordon on Monday with the intent of bringing him back if he cleared waivers. No team took a shot on him as a waiver claim so he became a free agent and was immediately added to Kansas City's practice squad. Gordon was a non-factor during the regular season, recording five catches for 32 yards before being healthy scratched during the playoffs.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 2:23 pm

  • Darrel Williams (toe) gets full practice Wednesday
Darrel Williams (toe) was a full participant in practice Wednesday.

Advice: Williams was inactive for the Chiefs' Divisional Round win over the Bills. Before last week, Williams appeared to be getting phased out of the offense anyway. Jerick McKinnon started over him in the Wild Card round and Williams saw just one carry before exiting with the toe issue. He is unlikely to get much work in the AFC Championship game. • Tee Higgins (thumb) gets in a full practice
Tee Higgins (thumb) was a full participant in practice Wednesday.

Advice: While the thumb issue is new, it's unlikely to have any impact on Higgins in the Bengals' AFC Championship matchup with the Chiefs. He saw nine targets and a full workload of snaps last week. His full participation this early in the week only confirms the fact that the "injury" is nothing of note. Advice: Burrow was held out of a meaningless Week 18 game because of the knee injury and hasn't looked back since. He has 592 yards in two playoff wins including Cincinnati's first playoff victory since 1991. The knee injury is clearly a non-factor at this point. NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 1:07 pm

  • Jeff Wilson (ankle) limited Wednesday
Jeff Wilson (ankle) did not practice Wednesday.

Advice: It was initially reported that Wilson would get in a limited practice but he has since been downgraded to a DNP. Wilson was diagnosed with a low-ankle sprain after the 49ers Divisional Round win over the Packers. He did not have a touch before exiting that game. With Elijah Mitchell turning into a workhorse back, Wilson's participation in the offense has gone to zero. NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 12:16 pm

  • Garoppolo (thumb) a full participant in practice
Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

Advice: Garoppolo's shoulder injury was removed from his practice report leaving only the thumb issue to note. He has played through the thumb injury in three games. Garoppolo will suit up for the NFC Championship game looking to extend the 49ers' win-streak over the Rams to seven games. NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 12:03 pm

  • Elijah Mitchell (knee) gets DNP status Wednesday
Elijah Mitchell (knee) did not practice Wednesday.

Advice: Mitchell was listed with the knee issue at the beginning of last week but was ultimately removed by Friday. He will likely get a similar treatment this week. The 49ers have leaned on Mitchell since his Week 17 return from the initial knee injury. He has seen at least 20 touches in four consecutive games and will be one of the best remaining fantasy options in the penultimate week of football this season.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Wednesday, 11:59 am

  • John Mara: Giants won't trade for Deshaun Watson
Speaking Wednesday, Giants owner John Mara told reporters "We're not trading for Deshaun Watson."

Advice: The Giants are in a tough situation with the salary cap as it is, and adding Watson would be an implausible move from a financial standpoint alone. Watson's legal issues obviously compound the difficulties in making any trade work, particularly to a cap-strapped franchise. Jeff Wilson has been diagnosed with a low-ankle sprain and is questionable for the NFC Championship game against the Rams.

Advice: Wilson allegedly has a chance to play after going down on a special teams play against the Packers. If Wilson is unable to go, Trey Sermon and JaMycal Hasty would fight for scraps behind Elijah Mitchell and Kyle Juszczyk. NBCSportsEDGE.com Monday, 3:34 pm

  • Chiefs waive Josh Gordon after 5 catches, 32 yards
    Chiefs waived WR Josh Gordon.

Advice: NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reports the Chiefs intend to bring Gordon back on the team's practice squad if he clears waivers. Kansas City brought Gordon in early this year but he failed to make an impact and was ultimately a weekly inactive down the stretch. Gordon wasn't active for either of the team's playoff games. He posted five catches for 32 yards and a touchdown during his short stint with the Chiefs. Gordon will draw some buzz as a free agent in the spring but it's been years since he was a meaningful contributor on an NFL team. His last 100-yard performance came in in 2018 with the Patriots. • Van Jefferson goes 2/29 in Divisional Round win
Van Jefferson caught 2-of-3 targets for 29 yards in the Rams' Divisional Round win over the Bucs.

Advice: Jefferson added a 15-yard carry. He has completely fallen behind Odell Beckham, who saw eight targets, in the pecking order. Jefferson has seven targets over his previous three games combined. He is nothing more than a DFS tournament flyer for the Rams' NFC Championship matchup with the 49ers.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Sunday, 5:52 pm

Chiefs declared RB Darrel Williams, WR Josh Gordon, OT Prince Tega Wanogho, DE Josh Kaindoh, CB Rashad Fenton, QB Shane Buechele inactive for the Divisional Round against the Bills.

Advice: Williams was benched in the Wild Card Round. He saw one rush attempt while Jerick McKinnon went for 142 yards on 18 touches. With Clyde Edwards-Helaire returning from his shoulder injury, Williams wasn't going to be involved in this game regardless of his health. McKinnon and CEH will split the backfield. • Tannehill throws three picks in Divisional Round
Ryan Tannehill completed 15-of-24 passes for 220 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions in the Titans’ 19-16 Divisional Round loss to the Bengals.

Advice: Tannehill got an unfair shake in his third year as Tennessee’s starter (and first without play-calling savant Arthur Smith), logging only 10.9% of his dropbacks with all of Derrick Henry, A.J. Brown, and Julio Jones together throughout the regular season. The 33-year-old averaged 9.4 yards per attempt on those plays, whereas his production plummeted to 5.2 YPA during the 24.6% of his dropbacks he made without all three. Tannehill’s 3.2 rush attempts per game were still encouragingly 0.5 more than he averaged in 2020, which should only help him produce more than the 15.8 fantasy points he averaged across 17 starts as the overall QB16 if all return healthy around him. He should be regarded as a tremendous bounce-back candidate with rushing upside in offseason drafts. NBCSportsEDGE.com Sunday, 1:02 am

  • Mitchell's 17 carries lead 49ers in Divisional win
Elijah Mitchell rushed 17 times for 53 yards in San Francisco's Divisional Round win over Green Bay, adding three catches for 18 yards on four targets.

Advice: Mitchell didn't have his best game, notably rolling up the middle on a key fourth-and-1 go when multiple pullers were headed to the outside. He also got called for an offensive face mask penalty on a play that would have set up a first-and-goal for the 49ers, and spent three of his four checkdown passes trying desperately to make sure Jimmy Garoppolo didn't throw a pick. He'll remain a heavy-volume play in the NFC Championship game, be it against Tampa Bay or Los Angeles.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Saturday, 9:37 pm

  • Garoppolo somehow wins NFC Divisional Round game
Jimmy Garoppolo completed 11-of-19 passes for 131 yards and an interception in San Francisco's 13-10 Divisional Round win over Green Bay.

Advice: After spending the first quarter hitting receivers right in the hands, Garoppolo fell apart in the second. His pick came under pressure in the red zone, where he attempted a pass that his arm could not cash the check on. He was sacked four times in 23 dropbacks and on multiple occasions in the second half drifted a wobbly checkdown pass into pick-six territory. The Packers couldn't capitalize. He also won the football game. The 49ers are set to play at the winner of Rams/Bucs next Sunday for the right to play in Super Bowl LVI.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Saturday, 9:30 pm

  • Jeff Wilson (ankle) ruled out of Divisional Round
49ers RB Jeff Wilson (ankle) was ruled out of Saturday's Divisional Round game vs. the Packers.

Advice: He wasn't targeted and had no rush attempts before leaving. This will elevate JaMycal Hasty and Trey Sermon up the depth chart if it's a serious injury and the 49ers advance, but Elijah Mitchell has almost all of the backfield share anyway. Wilson was carted off in the first quarter after a special teams play.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Saturday, 7:11 pm

  • Higgins bounces back with team-high nine targets
Tee Higgins caught 7-of-9 targets for 96 yards in Cincinnati's Divisional Round win over the Titans.

Advice: Higgins' disappearance in the Wild Card is an afterthought after he led the Bengals in targets Saturday night. His 96 yards also finished second on the team behind Ja'Marr Chase's 109, propelling Higgins to his most fantasy points in the last seven games. He fumbled at one point in the first half but the Bengals (and Chase in particular) were fortunate enough to recover. Higgins will remain a high-upside option for Conference Championship DFS slates. • Winning FG sends Bengals (!) to AFC Championship
Joe Burrow completed 28-of-37 passes for 348 yards and one interception in Cincinnati's 19-16 Divisional Round win over the Titans.

Advice: Tennessee's defense was relentless Saturday night, hounding Burrow for an NFL postseason record-tying nine sacks. Even so, Cincinnati's defense countered with three turnovers of its own, holding the Titans to a 12.5% conversation rate (1-for-8) on 3rd down. Burrow stepped up when it mattered most, pinpointing Ja'Marr Chase along the sideline for a 19-yard gain tied 16-16 with 0:15 remaining in the final quarter, moving Evan McPherson in range to kick the walk-off 52-yard field goal as time expired. Burrow's 348 yards under duress were also the second-most in franchise postseason history behind Ken Anderson’s 354 against the Jets in 1982, allowing the Bengals to advance to the AFC Championship game for the first time since 1988. Elijah Mitchell (knee) was left off the 49ers' final injury report for the Divisional Round against Green Bay.

Advice: There was never any doubt Mitchell was going to play. Mitchell has handled 20-plus carries in each of his past six appearances going back to mid-November. He will be an offensive focal point against a Packers defense that is vulnerable on the ground.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Thursday, 3:16 pm

  • Garoppolo (shoulder) left off final injury report
Jimmy Garoppolo (thumb, shoulder) does not have an injury designation for Saturday's Divisional Round game against the Packers.

Advice: "Threw the ball great," coach Kyle Shanahan said of Garoppolo's practice week. "He looked as good as he did the week before." Shanny said Garoppolo's thumb remains a bigger issue than his shoulder. Garoppolo's thumb has not been as big of an issue since he started taking pain-killing injections, though his typically shaky accuracy has not exactly gotten better. Shanahan's primary objective for his quarterback on Saturday will be ensuring he does not give the game away with bad turnovers.  NBCSportsEDGE.com Thursday, 2:54 pm

  • Darrel Williams (toe) DNPs again on Thursday
Darrel Williams (toe) didn't practice on Thursday for the second consecutive day.

Advice: Andy Reid said it was precautionary on Wednesday, but Williams wasn't on the field after his fumble, Jerick McKinnon played well in his absence, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire is trending up after getting back on the practice field. It wouldn't at all be surprising if Williams didn't suit up against the Bills. Advice: According to coach Andy Reid, it was more of a precautionary thing for Williams, whose toe just isn't right after he was hurt in Week 18. • Elijah Mitchell (knee) limited at practice Tuesday
49ers RB Elijah Mitchell was limited at practice on Tuesday with a knee injury.

Advice: It seems probable Mitchell will be available in the divisional round against the Packers, so this is likely more of a precaution than anything, which makes sense considering the rookie runner has been banged up over the second half of the year. Mitchell opened last week with a DNP but was removed from the injury report by Friday's practice. • Jimmy G (shoulder) limited at 49ers' practice
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) would be limited at practice on Tuesday.

Advice: Garoppolo's injury has been described as a "slight shoulder sprain" in his throwing arm. Still, the fact that he's practicing this early in the week bodes well for his chances of playing in the divisional round next weekend. The 30-year-old has been dealing with injuries all season long, but it seems more likely than not that he'll be able to play against the Packers. • Tomlin assuming Roethlisberger done as Steeler
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team is "proceeding with the assumption" that Ben Roethlisberger won't return in 2022.

Advice: It's a safe assumption after Roethlisberger, 40 in March, appeared to have nothing in the proverbial tank by season's end. Mason Rudolph, signed through the 2022 season, would be next in line to start for Pittsburgh unless they make a move in free agency or the NFL Draft. ESPN's Brooke Pryor reports Tomlin "hasn't expressed that he wants an everyday starter QB" to replace Roethlisberger next season. Tomlin implied that offensive coordinator Matt Canada had to "hold back" some of the offense thanks to personnel shortcomings, Pryor said. Tomlin could be referring to Roethlisberger's total inability to push the ball downfield. He said during his Tuesday presser that "quarterback mobility is valued" -- a potential tipoff as to who the team might pursue in the coming months. • GM: Watson ‘more than likely’ done with Texans
Texans general manager Nick Caserio said it's "more than likely" Deshaun Watson won't play for the Texans again.

Advice: Watson's future remains uncertain as the quarterback faces more than 20 lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct. The Dolphins are reportedly out on the Watson sweepstakes after firing Brian Flores. Other teams are understandably hesitant to pay the price for Watson while his legal status is up in the air. The Texans seem set on giving Davis Mills a shot under center after a passable rookie season in a talent-depleted Houston offense.
