Led by a Terrific Group of RBs, Urban Legends Has Great Shot at Playoffs

Draft Summary

When a bottom-half draft slot yields top-half results, that's the sign of a strong effort by the GM. Such was the case with Urban Legends, which flipped its sixth overall pick into a projected third-place finish in BeerDrinkersUnite League (8-5-0, 2,695 points). With their first five picks, Urban Legends aimed for balance, selecting QB Drew Brees (46th overall), RBs Lamar Miller (15th) and Devonta Freeman (26th), and WRs DeAndre Hopkins (6th) and Sammy Watkins (35th). They put together the best QB pair in the league, as they added Brees and Derek Carr.

Looks like somebody did their homework. With a draft like that, you could nominate yourself for the Toyota Hall Of Fame with your eyes closed. Go on, we dare you.

Ever wonder what exactly was inside the briefcase in Pulp Fiction? Urban Legends should use Week 9 to solve the mystery, since they certainly won't be winning. They have four players and the most projected fantasy points on bye that week. Taking a look at the entire season from start to finish, they have a more-difficult-than-average schedule. Along with the fifth-most grueling overall schedule, both the first four games and last four games of the season are about league-average difficulty for Urban Legends.

Draft Notes

  • Earning Your Paycheck

Urban Legends will have some tough decisions to make at WR each week, with a scant projected points difference between their third- (Demaryius Thomas), fourth- (Jordan Matthews), and fifth-ranked (John Brown) wideouts.

  • Close to the Vest

Urban Legends was focused on a squad with minimal volatility, grabbing nine "low-risk" players out of 17 picks.

  • Great Idea, Poor Execution

Urban Legends will need to get busy on the waiver wire in Week 4, as their only TE (Zach Ertz) and only K (Mason Crosby) will both be off that week.

  • A Dominating Pair

Urban Legends has a pair of fantasy MVPs in their lineup. Last season, two of their players (DeAndre Hopkins and Devonta Freeman) finished among the top-20 players that were on the most first-place fantasy teams.

  • My One and Only

Ignoring roster depth, Urban Legends chose only one player at three different positions (TE, DEF, and K).

  • Did Stretch Armstrong Make That Pick?

Grabbing Lavonte David at pick 155 was definitely a reach. David is owned on just a handful of teams across all Yahoo! leagues.

Player Analysis

    • D. Hopkins, WR
    • Round 1, Pick 6
    Diagnosis: more DeAndre!

Hopkins' breakout was just what the doctor ordered for fantasy owners last year. Only Devonta Freeman and Tom Brady appeared more often on championship rosters than Houston's star WR.

    • Lamar Miller, RB
    • Round 2, Pick 15
He's a Touchy, Feely Kind of Guy

With 311 touches, Lamar Miller is projected to rank fifth in the NFL in that category. How touching, Urban Legends.

    • D. Freeman, RB
    • Round 3, Pick 26
    Haters Gonna Hate

The rest of BeerDrinkersUnite League overlooked a gem, and Urban Legends made the swaggiest pick of the round by grabbing Devonta Freeman.

    • Sammy Watkins, WR
    • Round 4, Pick 35
    The Alchemist

Urban Legends chose a WR who's highly likely to turn a deep ball into TD gold. Sammy Watkins is projected to rank fourth among NFL WRs in plays over 40 yards with 6.1 and TDs over 40 yards with 2.3.

    • Drew Brees, QB
    • Round 5, Pick 46
    Urban Legends is No Photographer

But they can picture a fantasy championship with Drew Brees projected to put up 610 points this year.

Best Available

The best move for Urban Legends may be to let the season play out some before making a move, however, WR is one area they could potentially upgrade if they can't be patient.

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
