After Some Early Gambles, Cleveland Steamers Obviously Hates Winning

Draft Summary

Draft day is always an exciting time for fantasy football fans. The excitement quickly ends, however, when you put together a team like Cleveland Steamers. With a projected finish of 11th in Phi Mu Dellta 16-17 League at 2-11-0 (1,604 points), that excitement has quickly turned to the seven stages of grief. They aimed for having a roster with balance throughout, taking QB Cam Newton (22nd overall), RBs Jeremy Hill (3rd) and Devonta Freeman (27th), and WRs Michael Floyd (46th) and Jeremy Maclin (51st). They also landed the bottom group of WRs in the league, as they added Maclin, Floyd and Steve Smith Sr. for their rotation.

Keeper Summary

Cleveland Steamers made use of their only keeper spot to hold on to Jeremy Hill (54.1 ADP). From an ADP perspective, he is less valuable than a first-round draft pick.

Week 9 would be a good opportunity for Cleveland Steamers to take a yoga retreat, and who knows, having that flexibility may come in handy for the “stretch” run. They have five players and the most projected fantasy points on bye that week. Taking a look at the entire season from start to finish, they have one of the most challenging schedules. Cleveland Steamers could run into an early gauntlet, as the first four games of their season are projected to be more difficult than the league average.

Draft Notes

  • QB or Bust

QB is the only above-average position group for Cleveland Steamers.

  • Decently Mediocre

While the bottom half of the Cleveland Steamers roster is one of the strongest in the league (projected to be No. 2), the top of the roster is among the weakest (ranked No. 11).

  • Team of Winners

Cleveland Steamers is rocking a team of fantasy MVPs. Last season, three of their players were among the top-20 players that were on the most first-place fantasy teams (Cam Newton, Devonta Freeman, and DeAngelo Williams).

  • Mr. Mendoza

Chris Johnson is owned in only 2% of all Yahoo! leagues. Let's hope that a.) Cleveland Steamers has some solid inside information, or b.) he's a close friend of the family.

Player Analysis

    • Jeremy Hill, RB
    • Round 1, Pick 3
    Taking a Chance

With their first-round pick, Cleveland Steamers threw caution to the wind. They took Jeremy Hill at pick number 3 despite an ADP of 54.1 across all Yahoo! leagues.

    • Cam Newton, QB
    • Round 2, Pick 22
    Did Cleveland Steamers Just Dab?

Among QBs last season, only Tom Brady appeared on more first-place fantasy rosters than the reigning league MVP.

    • D. Freeman, RB
    • Round 3, Pick 27
    Better Lucky Than Good?

The rest of Phi Mu Dellta 16-17 League overlooked a gem, and Cleveland Steamers made the smartest value pick of the round by taking Devonta Freeman.

    • Michael Floyd, WR
    • Round 4, Pick 46
    Rethinking That One

While drafted 46th overall, Michael Floyd isn't projected among the NFL's top-30 in either receiving TDs (33rd with 6.4) or receiving yards (32nd with 947).

    • D. Williams, RB
    • Round 6, Pick 70
    It Was a Learning Experience

Hey, remember that time Cleveland Steamers took DeAngelo Williams WAY too early and the entire draft room erupted in laughter? Williams was the weakest value pick of the round.

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
