    • Chiefs considering not using Butker on kickoffs
Chiefs special teams coordinator said that because of the new kickoff rules, the team has considered not using Harrison Butker on kickoffs.

Advice: Toub points out that the new kickoff rules could require kickers to be more involved in tackles — something the Chiefs may prefer for Butker to avoid. Toub said the team watched every kickoff in the XFL, which first experimented with this rule, and found that kickers were involved in “at least 25 to 40 percent of the tackles” in the tape they watched. Toub said safety Justin Reid has been viewed as a potential option to replace Butker on kickoffs, but it doesn’t seem like anything is definite at this time. It wouldn’t be surprising to see other teams consider this approach to avoid injuries to their kickers. Rotoworld Thursday, 12:27 pm

    • Adds muscle in offseason
Head coach Mike McDaniel said Tuesday that Achane has made "some strength gains" and improved his understanding of Miami's offense, Andre Fernandez of The Miami Herald reports.

Advice: Achane seems to be off to a good start to the offseason program, potentially allowing him to earn a larger share of the snaps in the backfield in 2024 behind returning starter Raheem Mostert. Both backs should have significant roles after the impressive work they did in 2023, while fourth-round pick Jaylen Wright is a wild card to earn occasional carries. Adding some weight might lower Achane's injury risk a bit and/or allow him to take on more touches, though he'll still be one of the smallest and fastest running backs in the league, at least among players competing for a significant number of carries and early down snaps. He ran a 4.32-second 40-yard dash at 188 pounds at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, then took 103 carries for 800 yards (7.8 YPC) and three touchdowns in 11 regular-season games as a rookie. Achane also drew 37 targets and recorded three receiving touchdowns, with the pass-catching work allowing him to stay involved even when Mostert was healthy and gobbling up carries. • Making progress with foot
Williams (foot) went through an up-tempo workout Tuesday with athletic trainers, Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reports.

Advice: While he won't practice at OTAs or minicamp, Williams is at least able to get out on the field and move around with the Rams' training staff. The activity would seem to support head coach Sean McVay's recent comments downplaying the severity of Williams' foot injury, though it's worth noting that the running back suffered a broken foot early in the 2022 offseason, shortly after the Rams took him in the fifth round of the draft. McVay said Williams will miss offseason practices before returning for training camp, at which point the third-year pro will take his spot atop the depth chart. His absences from practice this spring could open up first-team reps for third-round pick Blake Corum, offseason pickup Boston Scott and even Ronnie Rivers or Zach Evans. • Knee issue downplayed
Colts head coach Shane Steichen said that Pittman (knee) "should be fine" after he left the practice field early Wednesday, Mike Chappell of Fox 59 News Indianapolis reports.

Advice: Steichen said Pittman "just bumped knees" during 11-on-11 drills. The Colts have no incentive to rush Pittman -- who's fresh off signing a three-year, $70 million extension -- back on the field, so it's possible he misses more of OTAs. Still, the No. 1 wideout ought to have plenty of opportunities to build chemistry with second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson this offseason, as long as his knee injury is indeed only minor. Pittman managed a 109-1,152-4 receiving line across 16 games last season despite substandard quarterback play, so having a healthy Richardson back under center should raise his fantasy ceiling. • Steichen: Michael Pittman (knee) ‘should be fine’
Colts coach Shane Steichen said Michael Pittman (knee) “should be fine” after colliding with CB Jaylon Jones in OTAs.

Advice: Per Steichen, the two players bumped knees in practice. Pittman went down hard and walked off the field with trainers in the middle of the session. Steichen didn’t seem overly concerned after practice, so we’ll assume this isn’t an issue for Pittman until further notice. Pittman is coming off a breakout season with Gardner Minshew under center for most of the year and is now attempting to run it back with Anthony Richarson as his primary passer. Richardson’s rushing output will depress the target volume for Pittman, keeping him in the middle of the WR2 range for early drafters. Rotoworld Wednesday, 12:21 pm

    • Departs practice after collision
Pittman (knee) departed Wednesday's practice early after appearing to injure his knee during a collision in 11-on-11 drills, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Advice: Pittman was examined by trainers before limping off the field, and it appears safe to say that his on-field activities for Wednesday's session are over. The Colts should provide an update on Pittman's health soon, as he's entrenched as the focal point of the passing game after signing a three-year, $70 million contract earlier this offseason. In the meantime, second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson will be able to focus on developing chemistry with Josh Downs, rookie second-round pick Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce.
