  • Bengals sign QB Jake Browning to 2-year extension
    Bengals signed QB Jake Browning to a two-year contract extension.

    Advice: Browning filled in admirably for Joe Burrow in 2023, throwing for nearly 2,000 yards and 12 touchdowns over seven starts for Cincinnati. Browning had the league’s seventh highest completion rate over expected and tenth best EPA per drop back as the Bengals went 4-3 in his starts. He completed 70 percent of his passes in 2023.     Browning signed a two-year contract with the Bengals on Tuesday.

    Advice: Undrafted back in 2019, the QB spent two years on Minnesota's practice squad and then two seasons on Cincinnati's. Browning finally got his shot in 2023, winning the No. 2 QB job for the Bengals and eventually replacing an injured Joe Burrow (wrist) for the final seven and a half games of the season. Browning played surprisingly well down the stretch, with 15 total TDs (three rushing) and seven turnovers (all INTs) while leading all qualified passers in completion percentage (70.4) and ranking fifth in yards per attempt (8.0). The 28-year-old's status as an exclusive-rights free agent this offseason essentially locked him into staying with the Bengals, and the two-year deal now sets him up to be a restricted free agent after 2025. His solid performance in 2023, combined with 2-3 more years of team control, could make Browning a trade target for QB-needy teams, though there haven't been rumblings of interest this spring.   • NYJ could have ‘reset’ if team struggles in 2024
    ESPN’s Rich Cimini believes the Jets could have an “organizational reset” if the 2024 season “doesn’t go well.”

    Advice: With the team’s Zach Wilson Experiment ending this week with the former first rounder’s trade to Denver, Cimini suggested the Jets could take a QB of the future in the 2024 NFL Draft. Tulane’s Michael Pratt and Florida State’s Jordan Travis took pre-draft visits to the Jets and general manager Joe Douglas “sounds like he wants to take a quarterback” in the draft, according to Cimini. Aaron Rodgers, 40, who missed the entire 2023 season with an Achilles injury, has said he wants to play up to four more seasons, but he’s only signed with the Jets through the 2024 season. “If it falls apart with Rodgers, they will go into next year’s draft like the current Broncos and Minnesota Vikings — desperate,” Cimini said. In Green Bay, Rodgers didn’t take it well when the Packers drafted Jordan Love in the 2020 draft as Rodgers’ heir apparent.     The Jets are trading Wilson to the Broncos for a late-round pick swap, Jeff Howe of The Athletic reports.

    Advice: The Jets will give up the 256th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and receive pick No. 203. They'll also hold some of Wilson's salary, with the 24-year-old scheduled for $5.45 million in guaranteed compensation for the final year of his rookie contract. This could give Wilson a shot to compete for a starting job, depending on what the Broncos do in the upcoming draft.   • Let’s ride: Broncos acquire Zach Wilson from Jets
    Jets traded QB Zach Wilson and a 2024 seventh round pick to the Broncos in exchange for a 2024 sixth-round pick.

    Advice: The real story here may be the phenomenally down-bad quarterback room that is being constructed in Denver. Wilson joins the likes of Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci in the Mile High City, forming a trio that’s sure to instill confidence in any defense they face in a given week. Of course, the Broncos are still expected to add a quarterback of note at some point in this week’s NFL Draft, but the optics are hilarious for the time being. Wilson, who was drafted by the Jets with the No. 2 overall pick in 2021, was given ample opportunities to succeed over the last three years but consistently fell well short of the mark for being even a passable NFL quarterback. For better or worse, head coach Robert Saleh stuck by Wilson until it was just no longer reasonable to do so. He was eventually benched in favor of Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian after going 4-7 over 11 starts, spelling what would be the eventual end of his time in New York. Boasting a line of 6,293-23-25 over 34 career games, Wilson is officially a reclamation project who may not have more than a summer to prove to Sean Payton that he can contribute to an NFL franchise. According to The Athletics’ Dianna Russini, the Broncos had been eyeing a potential trade for Wilson for weeks, and they believe he still has The Jets will reportedly pay close to $2.75 million of Wilson’s salary for the upcoming season.   • Dak hasn’t had contract negotiations with Cowboys
    Dak Prescott said he and the Cowboys have not begun negotiations for a new contract extension.

    Advice: Prescott is in the final year of his current deal and is currently set to earn $55.455 million in 2024. While Prescott would be more than happy to take home that large sum of cash this season, his contract, as it stands right now, is leaving the Cowboys strapped for cash with extensions for other players — particularly CeeDee Lamb — coming down the line. Prescott said he doesn’t “necessarily” want to be the highest-paid quarterback in the league, and that he wants to do what’s best for the team.   • ‘No news to report’ on Zach Wilson trade market
    Jets GM Joe Douglas said there’s “just no news to report” regarding a potential trade of QB Zach Wilson.

    Advice: The Jets are reportedly waiting for an acceptable offer for the former No. 2 overall pick but there’s presumably a significant delta between what the Jets consider acceptable vs. what the league considers. Wilson, who has been a regular participant in offseason activities over the last three years was noticeably absent from voluntary workouts this week. He was given permission to speak with other teams about a potential trade, but it doesn’t appear anything significant came from that.   • Jaguars still working on extension with Lawrence
    Jaguars GM Trent Baalke said the team is still working toward a contract extension with Trevor Lawrence.

    Advice: Baalke said the team is trying “not to force anything” but acknowledged that he spoke recently with Lawrence’s agent. Lawrence is heading into the fourth year of his rookie deal and will presumably have his fifth year exercised later this offseason. Lawrence has thrown for 11,770-58-39 through his first three seasons in the league, going 20-30 in his first 50 starts and 17-16 in a post-Urban Meyer world. He led the Jaguars to the playoffs in 2022 and led them to an inspiring comeback win over the Chargers in his first playoff game. It seems apparent at this point that both sides hope to get a deal done but with essentially two years left on his rookie contract, it’s no surprise that neither is rushing to get a deal done.
