Before the draft, no one would have expected this squad to end up with a projected finish of second. Jake's Quality Team turned the eighth overall pick into a season potentially filled with success. They're expected to finish 8-2-3 (1,194 points) in Hiawatha Elite League. With their first five picks, Jake's Quality Team aimed for balance, selecting QB Drew Brees (17th overall), RBs Giovani Bernard (32nd) and Trent Richardson (56th), and WRs Calvin Johnson (8th) and Vincent Jackson (41st). They landed the top group of WRs in the league, as they have Johnson, Jackson, and Michael Floyd.

Jake's Quality Team should use Week 10 to consider life's deeper mysteries, like what was the greatest thing before sliced bread? No, seriously, think about it. It's better than thinking about fantasy football that week. They have four players and the most projected fantasy points on bye that week. Looking at the entire season, they have one of the softest slates. Jake's Quality Team will have to be on top of their game as the playoffs approach, as the last four games of their season are projected to be more difficult than the league average.

Draft Notes

  • Separating the Wheat from the Chaff

At three different positions, Jake's Quality Team picked up projected top-3 players (Seattle, Drew Brees, and Calvin Johnson).

  • Afraid to Step Outside Your Comfort Zone?

With eight "low-risk" players among their 15 picks, Jake's Quality Team is looking for dependable help.

  • Team of Champions?

Jake's Quality Team is fielding a team of fantasy MVPs. Last season, three of their players were among the top-20 players that were on the most championship rosters across all Yahoo! leagues: Calvin Johnson, Drew Brees, and Josh Gordon.

  • The Bargain Whisperer

Jake's Quality Team was hunting for steals throughout the draft, snapping up a trio of bargains in the first 9 rounds (Michael Floyd, Seattle, and Giovani Bernard).

  • Mr. Relevant

In terms of projected points, the choice of Nick Novak was the strongest pick of the final round. Savvy move there, Jake's Quality Team.

Player Analysis

    • Calvin Johnson, WR
    • Round 1, Pick 8
    Meeting His Expectations

Often the only WR taken in the first round in 2013, Megatron lived up to the billing and was owned on more playoff teams across Yahoo! than any other wideout.

    • Drew Brees, QB
    • Round 2, Pick 17
    Like a Prancing Unicorn

Drew Brees is a fantasy dream. He's projected to finish second in the NFL in both passing TDs (37.9) and passing yards (5,089).

    • G. Bernard, RB
    • Round 3, Pick 32
    If it Ain't Broke

Then do fix it? Laughing in the face of decades of fantasy tradition, Jake's Quality Team didn't grab their first RB (Giovani Bernard) until the third round.

    • V. Jackson, WR
    • Round 4, Pick 41
On a Scale of 1 to America

How free will Vincent Jackson get in the secondary? He's projected to put up 1,206 receiving yards this year.

    • T. Richardson, RB
    • Round 5, Pick 56
    Taking a Chance

With their fifth-round pick, Jake's Quality Team threw caution to the wind. They took Trent Richardson at pick number 56 despite an ADP of 94.8 across all Yahoo! leagues.

How We Grade

Draft grades are based strictly on teams' draft performances. This is calculated by counting the number of fantasy points teams are projected to score over the course of the season using their optimal line-ups. The grades do not take schedule into account. Because of bye weeks and other variables it is possible to earn a high grade yet be projected to finish in the middle of the pack. The opposite is also true. Bottom line: Fantasy Football is like the real game. You can draft the greatest talent in the world but you still need to manage your team every week to get the most out of that talent. As a wise man once said, "On any given Sunday..."
