  • 'Never in dispute' Rawls is Seahawks starter
The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta says it's "never been in dispute" that Thomas Rawls (ankle) is the Seahawks' starter "when healthy."

Advice: More interestingly, Condotta says Rawls takes the first-team handoffs in Seahawks practice, ahead of Christine Michael. Although Michael has run almost exclusively with the ones in preseason games, Rawls is the favorite to lead Seattle in Week 1 carries assuming his ankle is cooperative. Another beat writer previously predicted Rawls would handle 15 carries in Week 1, and Michael 7. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:25 pm

The Steelers worked out free agent Karlos Williams.

  • Tyler Gaffney might not make Patriots' 53?
The Boston Herald's Jeff Howe is "still not convinced" Tyler Gaffney will make the Patriots' 53-man roster.

Advice: We won't find out for sure until this weekend, and even after that it's possible Gaffney could be cut for a waiver claim. "I could also see a scenario where Gaffney makes the initial 53 but Pats like someone better on the waiver wire and make a midweek change," wrote Howe. Gaffney worked with the first-team offense in the regular season dress rehearsal, but his skills are somewhat redundant with LeGarrette Blount's. • Report: Charles not Chiefs feature back yet
ESPN Chiefs reporter Adam Teicher reports Jamaal Charles "hasn’t regained the role -- full-time featured back -- he had before last season’s torn ACL."

Advice: Teicher reports Spencer Ware is handling most of Kansas City's first-team running back reps in practice. Specifically, Teicher wrote that Ware "generally gets a lot of the starter’s snaps in practice. Charcandrick West gets some. Sometimes there are a few left for Charles, too." On Tuesday, coach Andy Reid said Tamba Hali (knee) is "a little further along than what Jamaal is right now," in their respective recoveries. At this point, it's unclear what Charles' role will be in Week 1 against the Chargers. An early-year RBBC appears likely. Due to their backfield depth, Teicher suggests the Chiefs "can afford to take the longer view with Charles." Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:26 pm

Redskins placed RB Keith Marshall on injured reserve with a damaged UCL in his elbow, ending his season.

Advice: Marshall was given a three-week timeline upon going down, but either his prognosis got worse, or the Redskins used his injury as an opportunity to free up a roster spot. Marshall was a hyped seventh-rounder out of Georgia, but didn't make nearly as much noise once the pads went on. • Cowboys rookie Elliott not in football shape?
Cowboys.com's Bryan Broaddus believes Ezekiel Elliott is not yet in "football shape."

Advice: This is just one man's opinion, but comes via a trusted team insider who works for the Cowboys. It's actually not surprising that Zeke isn't yet in Week 1-ready condition after he missed most of the beginning of camp with a hamstring issue. Elliott only resumed practicing fully about ten days ago. Elliott, of course, still beasted with 7-48 rushing against Seattle's first-team defense while working as an every-down back on the first two possessions Thursday night. Although recreational marijuana use is legal in Seattle, marijuana remains a banned substance by the NFL. The website's sources did say Elliott "didn't buy or smoke anything in the store." Rawls needs to be on his game from Week 1, something that will be a challenge after barely practicing this offseason. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 4:45 pm

  • Suspended Karlos Williams visited the Jets
Suspended free agent RB Karlos Williams visited the Jets.

Advice: It's Williams' first-known visit since he cleared waivers on Monday. ESPN New York's termed the visit as "due diligence," and says a deal is not imminent. Suspended and overweight, Williams will be signing at the nadir of his value if he finds a new home this week. His best course of action may be getting his body right and building his extremely slim leverage. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 3:50 pm

  • Jamaal Charles gets in a full practice
Jamaal Charles (knee) was a full participant in team drills on Tuesday.

Advice: It's the first time in camp Charles has been full-go for 11-on-11s. Charles isn't going to see any preseason action, but is right on course for Week 1. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 1:53 pm

  • RB Drake won't play in third preseason game
Despite returning to practice, Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (hamstring) will sit out this week's regular season dress rehearsal.

Advice: Drake "hopes" to see some action in the finale, and insists he'll be ready for Week 1. The oft-injured rookie has fallen behind Isaiah Pead on the depth chart. That's quite an inglorious way to begin an NFL career. Drake is off the re-draft radar. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 11:06 am

  • Kenyan Drake back at practice Tuesday
Dolphins rookie RB Kenyan Drake (hamstring) returned to practice Tuesday.

Advice: The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reported Monday Drake was not expected back this week, so this is something of a surprise. In Salguero's defense, the rookie will likely reinjure the hamstring before the week is through. Drake is at best third on the depth chart in Miami. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 9:51 am

  • Garrett confirms Elliott will play Thursday
Cowboys coach Jason Garrett confirmed Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) will play Thursday.

Advice: Adam Schefter reported as much on Monday, but it is nice to get the confirmation. Garrett said the plan is for Zeke to see 8-to-12 touches in his NFL debut. Even with Alfred Morris shining in the preseason, Elliott should open the season as the clear workhorse in Dallas. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 8:54 am

  • Zeke Elliott on track for 3rd preseason game
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Ezekiel Elliott (hamstring) participated in Cowboys practice Monday and "appears set" to play in Dallas' third preseason game Thursday night against Seattle.

Advice: The Cowboys have been taking it easy on Elliott since he went down on August 3. He's participated in walkthroughs, but has been kept out of team drills up until this point. Meanwhile, Lance Dunbar (knee) has been activated off active/PUP and Alfred Morris has parlayed 16 preseason carries into 96 yards (6.0 YPC) and a touchdown. Elliott can reassert himself as the Cowboys' intended workhorse back by playing Thursday night and doing so effectively. Rotoworld.com Aug 22, 2:58 pm

  • Karlos Williams goes unclaimed on waivers
Suspended ex-Bills RB Karlos Williams went unclaimed on waivers and is now an unrestricted free agent.

Advice: Williams is thought to be upwards of 30 pounds overweight and failed to show the Bills he is passionate about continuing his career after spending the offseason snacking with his pregnant girlfriend. Williams is also suspended for the first month of the season. Only 23 years old and coming off a nine-touchdown rookie campaign, Williams will resurface if and only if he gets himself in shape. • Keith Marshall behind Kelley on depth chart
Speaking Monday, Redskins coach Jay Gruden called UDFA Rob Kelley the next man up during Matt Jones' (shoulder) preseason absence.

Advice: GM Scot McCloughan hyped seventh-rounder Keith Marshall up a bit earlier this month, but he's fallen behind Kelley. An end-of-bench stash in Dynasty leagues, Marshall is off the re-draft radar. Rotoworld.com Aug 22, 12:01 pm

  • Matt Jones (shoulder) done for the preseason
The Redskins will hold Matt Jones (shoulder) out for the rest of the preseason, but believe he has made "great strides" in his recovery.

Advice: Jones has a "second degree" separation. It's discouraging news, but ultimately not alarming. The Redskins have every reason to be cautious with their sophomore back, and even if he needs the reps, it's not worth risking a setback. Jones is still the clear starter heading into Week 1. Coach Jay Gruden has said UDFA Rob Kelley will get "a lot" of first-team reps in Jones' absence. Rotoworld.com Aug 22, 11:54 am

  • Kenyan Drake still not ready to practice
The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero reports Dolphins rookie RB Kenyan Drake (hamstring) will not practice this week.

Advice: Drake has been sidelined since August 5 with a hamstring injury. He will not be ready for the third preseason game on Thursday, and it is reasonable to question if he will be ready to go for the regular season. Injury-prone in college, Drake has already missed time with two injuries in his short NFL career. Rotoworld.com Aug 22, 8:05 am

  • Jamaal Charles not expected to play this week
Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Jamaal Charles (knee) is not expected to play this week.

Advice: Charles has been seeing more and more work during practice, but the Chiefs are in no hurry to risk his surgically-repaired knee in a meaningless preseason game. It is likely Charles is held out until Week 1. Even with the injury concerns, Charles is shaping up as a back-end RB1. Rotoworld.com Aug 22, 6:12 am

  • Thomas Rawls 'on track to start the opener'
Thomas Rawls (ankle) has resumed practicing without limitations, and ESPN Seahawks reporter Sheil Kapadia says Rawls is "on track to start the opener."

Advice: Despite Christine Michael's monster preseason, the Seattle beat writers foresee Rawls as the Week 1 lead back. "He looks really good and I think the signs are very positive that he's going to be ready in a couple weeks to play," coach Pete Carroll said Sunday. Kapadia previously projected Rawls to log 15 carries in Week 1 versus Miami, with Michael handling seven rushing attempts. Rotoworld.com Aug 21, 3:49 pm

  • Report: Dion Lewis (knee) to miss 8-10 weeks
The Boston Herald reports Dion Lewis' knee surgery will sideline him for 8-10 weeks.

Advice: The procedure is viewed as "relatively minor," but was required following Lewis' ACL tear last November. He was presumably dealing with loose particles in the knee. A source told the Herald that Lewis still "has a good chance of playing in 2016," even if he is likely to open on the season on reserve/PUP. The Herald adds that James White "has had the best summer of his three-year career." Rotoworld.com Aug 21, 2:04 pm

  • Lewis' knee surgery a 'clean-up' operation
Dion Lewis' second knee procedure will be a "clean-up" surgery.

Advice: It's an important distinction and it leaves the door open for a return later this season. It's still likely Lewis will open 2016 on the reserve/PUP list, which would cost him at least the first six games. Receiving back James White will get a lot more usage with Lewis sidelined. • Report: Dion Lewis needs 2nd surgery on knee
The Boston Globe reports Dion Lewis needs a second surgery on his already surgically repaired knee.

Advice: James White just got a lot more interesting. Lewis tore his ACL last November 8. Although he's been seen in the Patriots' locker room getting around normally and without a brace, Lewis' need for more surgery will almost certainly keep him on reserve/PUP for New England's first six games. The news makes Lewis a tough sell as a fantasy pick in normal-sized leagues. White is now worthy of serious consideration in the mid-to-late rounds of PPR drafts. Rotoworld.com Aug 21, 9:09 am

  • Dion Lewis (knee) could still land on reserve/PUP
ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss said Dion Lewis (ACL) starting the year on the reserve/PUP list will become a "stronger possibility" if he doesn't practice this week.

Advice: Reiss believes coach Bill Belichick is considering having Lewis sit out the first six games of the regular season, which would give him almost a full calendar year to recover from a torn ACL. Lewis was on the field for New England's last spring practice but hasn't suited up for any of the team's training camp activities and remains on the active/PUP list. For what it's worth, Reiss doesn't expect the Patriots to pursue Karlos Williams, who was cut by the Bills last week. Rotoworld.com Aug 21, 5:53 am
