  • Titans sign TE Orson Charles to p-squad
Titans signed TE Orson Charles to the practice squad.

Advice: Charles, the 116th overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Bengals, is still just 23 years old. He never found a role in Cincinnati, as the coaching staff couldn't decide whether to use Charles at tight end, fullback, or H-back. In Tennessee, he can develop under two former NFL tight ends in coach Ken Whisenhunt and TEs coach Mike Mularkey. Charles was a first-team All-SEC pick in 2011. Rotoworld.com

  • Update: Wes Welker suspension starts Week 1
Updating a previous item, Wes Welker's four-game suspension will start this week.

Advice: There was some chatter that Welker may be able to play Week 1, and have his suspension pushed back a week because the league didn't announce the ban early enough. That rumor lasted an hour. Welker will miss the opener against the Colts in addition to Denver's next three games. He'll be back Week 6. Andre Caldwell and/or Cody Latimer will see additional snaps in three-wide sets. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: Broncos believe Welker plays Week 1
The Denver Post's Mike Klis reports the Broncos believe suspended WR Wes Welker will play Week 1 against the Colts.

Advice: Per Klis, the Broncos think they'll have Welker this week because "suspensions are never announced this late in week" with the "game plan" already "in place." Okay. It's only Tuesday. We're not sure what to make of this, as we've never seen a suspended player allowed to play because the suspension was announced on a certain day of the week. It would obviously be an immediate boost for fantasy owners, but Welker is still getting a four-game ban. He's simply either going to be back Week 6 or 7. We'll update when details are available. Speaking Tuesday, Falcons OC Dirk Koetter said Devin Hester will "definitely have a role in our offense."

Advice: Here we go again. The Bears tried off and on for eight years to square peg Hester into a round hole on offense, and he never managed more than four scores. Hester has two 500-yard seasons to his name. Perhaps he'll catch 20 balls as a situational deep threat. He remains off the fantasy radar. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: MDMA behind Welker's positive test
Profootballtalk reports Wes Welker's positive test for amphetamines was the result of MDMA ("Molly") that had been "cut with amphetamines."

Advice: It's the same explanation Cowboys CB Orlando Scandrick used for his positive PED test in August. "Molly" could be surpassing "Adderall" as the excuse du jour for those who run afoul of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. Currently recovering from a concussion, Welker can't return until Week 6, as Denver is on bye in Week 4. Emmanuel Sanders is now the clear No. 2 opposite Demaryius Thomas, with Cody Latimer and Andre Caldwell fighting for snaps as the No. 3. Rotoworld.com

  • Wes Welker slapped with four-game PED ban
NFL suspended Broncos WR Wes Welker four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Advice: According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Welker's positive test was the result of amphetamines. That's different than the typical PED excuse, "Adderall." Welker won't be reinstated until Week 6, as the Broncos are on bye in Week 4. It means Emmanuel Sanders is now locked in as the Broncos' No. 2 receiver opposite Demaryius Thomas, and that second-rounder Cody Latimer has bench-stash appeal as a WR5. Sanders should see significant time in the slot, with Latimer getting some run outside. It's worth noting that Latimer was behind veteran Andre Caldwell on the depth chart this preseason. That would be a best-case scenario after Wilson was given a 12-14 week timeline upon going down on August 4. Fourth-round rookie Devonta Freeman remains the No. 4 back on the Falcons' "unofficial" Week 1 depth chart.

Advice: Freeman rushed 32 times for 134 yards (4.18 YPC) and a touchdown in the preseason, adding 11 catches for an additional 146 yards. He graded out as Pro Football Focus' No. 1 running back. In other words, his depth-chart placement is likely ceremonial. Jacquizz Rodgers has firmly established he's a poor NFL backup, while Antone Smith is a 29-year-old (this month) change-of-pace back. Either way, a demotion to third string wouldn't be a benching, but a throwing in of the towel. Apparently, the only people on the planet who didn't realize he was finished work in the Raiders' front office -- which also traded for Matt Flynn last offseason. The Miami Herald believes it's "clear" Lamar Miller has fallen behind Knowshon Moreno for lead-back duties.

  • Whiz: Sankey showed improvement Saturday
Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Bishop Sankey showed improvement on Saturday night.

Advice: The Titans implored Sankey to clean up his footwork, exchanges and ball security issues. The second-round rookie took heed and turned in a clean performance although he picked up just 44 yards on 16 carries (2.75 YPC). "He responded to what we asked about," Whisenhunt said. Sankey has run exclusively with the second- and third-stringers throughout the preseason, but more clean performances in practice will lead to an eventual climb up the depth chart. We've seen what Shonn Greene is, and it isn't pretty. Still, Sankey's fifth-round ADP is far too steep considering his current role. Rotoworld.com

  • Larry Fitzgerald shakes loose for 3-71-0
Larry Fitzgerald caught three passes for 71 yards in Sunday's preseason game against the Bengals.

Advice: Fitzgerald now lines up outside in two-wide sets and shifts into the slot in three- and four-wide formations. It's the way Bruce Arians extends the careers of once-elite receivers that are beginning to decline. Through three preseason games, Fitz has seven catches for 106 yards and one touchdown while Michael Floyd didn't make his preseason debut until tonight (one catch, four yards). Fitz remains a solid WR2 bet as he'll see plenty of volume as Arians' Reggie Wayne/Hines Ward. Rotoworld.com

  • Matt Schaub now battling 'sore elbow'
Matt Schaub is now battling a "sore elbow" at Raiders camp.

Advice: An arm injury doesn't explain Schaub's inability to move or make sound decisions, but could be telling in regards to his noticeable shortage of arm strength. Schaub has looked genuinely Matt Flynnian in preseason games. Perhaps the sore elbow will be the excuse Dennis Allen needs to put Schaub out of his misery. He's been outplayed by rookie Derek Carr throughout August. Rotoworld.com
