  • Mallett not expected to start for Texans
The Houston Chronicle doesn't expect Ryan Mallett to challenge for the Texans' starting job anytime soon.

Advice: Per beat writer Brian Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick is "locked in" as coach Bill O'Brien's starter. Mallett is being brought to Houston as a quarterback with familiarity of the offense. We don't doubt that Fitzpatrick is the guy for right now, but once he struggles, because he certainly will, the Mallett chants will begin. Rotoworld.com

  • Matt Schaub benched in Oakland
    Matt Schaub has been benched.

Advice: This was an easy prediction a half-year ago. Schaub went Full-Delhomme over his final 16 games with Houston, posting a 13:19 TD-to-INT ratio with a mind-blowing five pick-sixes. Apparently, the only people on the planet who didn't realize he was finished work in the Raiders' front office -- which also traded for Matt Flynn last offseason. Oakland will move forward with second-round pick Derek Carr as its starter. All of Schaub's $8 million base salary for 2014 is guaranteed, so he remains a roster lock. Rotoworld.com

  • Glazer: Raiders will start Derek Carr Week 1
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Raiders will start Derek Carr in Week 1 against the Jets, and have sent Matt Schaub to the bench.

Advice: The coaches informed the players on Monday. It's the right call after Schaub had a dumpster fire of a preseason, and Carr sizzled with a 105.2 passer rating on 45 throws. With Schaub nursing a sore elbow in the preseason finale, Carr carved up the Seahawks for 143 yards and three scores on 13 passes. The current regime in Oakland needs to win football games now, and Carr gives the Raiders their best chance at that. It's a tough first test for Carr on the road against a ferocious defensive line. But he should find windows to throw into against what is arguably the worst cornerback group in the league. Rotoworld.com

  • Rumor comes to life: Texans acquire Mallett
Texans acquired QB Ryan Mallett from the Patriots in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2016.

Advice: The "compensation" is as close to nothing as the Texans could have sent. Seemingly on the block since the day he arrived in New England in 2011, Mallett has been heavily connected to the Texans since they named former Pats OC Bill O'Brien head coach. Mallett adds more depth to the Texans' uninspiring trio of Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum and Tom Savage, but isn't an obvious upgrade. His acquisition should mean Keenum is sent packing. Despite his inexplicable name recognition, we wouldn't count on Mallett starting any games. He's attempted only four regular-season passes, and has never stood out in exhibition action. Rotoworld.com

Coach Dennis Allen, who had previously been adamant that Matt Schaub would start the opener, became more wishy-washy with his comments Thursday night. It's led beat writers to believe Carr is going to get the nod two Sundays from now in the Meadowlands. Schaub's arm is shot, while Carr's is cocked and loaded with big-time talent. Unfortunately, Hill's hands are made of stone, while his body has yet to hold up in the NFL. Ex-GM Mike Tannenbaum made Hill the 43rd overall pick in the 2012 draft. It's unusual for a starting quarterback to play in the finale, especially since Manuel and the Bills had an extra contest in the Hall-of-Fame Game. Manuel could end up a colossal draft bust. Rotoworld.com

  • Raiders still committed to Schaub for Week 1
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Raiders remain committed to Matt Schaub as their Week 1 starter.

Advice: No one but the Raiders expected Schaub to look good this preseason, but he's been ever worse than feared, completing just 24-of-47 passes for 218 yards (4.63 YPA), zero touchdowns and one pick through three games. The Raiders have given themselves an out, however, discovering a "minor" elbow "injury." Second-rounder Derek Carr may have seized the starting job had he not missed last weekend's dress rehearsal with a rib ailment. Schaub is on borrowed time under center. He's un-draftable in two-quarterback leagues. Rotoworld.com

  • Patriots still trying to trade Ryan Mallett
The Patriots are expected to hold Ryan Mallett out of Thursday's preseason finale as opportunities around the NFL become available.

Advice: The Patriots are still holding out hope that they can get something in a trade for Mallett, who is entering the final year of his contract. It remains unlikely, even with Sam Bradford (knee) going down and Cam Newton (ribs) slightly iffy for Week 1. If teams are interested in Mallett, they know he'll likely be on waivers soon. Second-round rookie Jimmy Garoppolo will start Thursday. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: OAK staff feels comfortable with Carr
According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, the Raiders' staff feels Derek Carr is ready to start if needed.

Advice: Everyone in the NFL world knew Matt Schaub was done except for the Raiders. Now he's dealing with tendinitis in his throwing elbow and is looking no better than he did when he got benched in favor of Case Keenum last year. If Carr can show well in the preseason finale Thursday, there will be serious pressure on Dennis Allen to start the rookie as soon as Week 1. Either way, Carr is a near lock to make some starts this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Matt Schaub diagnosed with tendinitis
Matt Schaub has been diagnosed with mere tendinitis in his throwing elbow.

Advice: It's a non-structural issue that can often be healed with rest. The Raiders should be praying that this is the only reason Schaub's arm strength has looked so poor this preseason -- he didn't look any better last year before getting benched in favor of Case Keenum in Houston. Schaub will likely be under center Week 1, but we'd bet on Derek Carr giving the Raiders a better chance to win this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Derek Carr is fully healthy
Rookie Derek Carr was the Raiders' first-team quarterback at Sunday's practice, and will play in Thursday's preseason finale against Seattle.

Advice: Matt Schaub is nursing a "sore elbow," so Carr is running with the ones. Carr has recovered fully from his concussion and rib injury, which were suffered in the Raiders' second preseason game. If Carr plays well against the Seahawks, we would not entirely rule out the possibility he starts Week 1 against the Jets. Rotoworld.com

  • Matt Schaub now battling 'sore elbow'
Matt Schaub is now battling a "sore elbow" at Raiders camp.

Advice: An arm injury doesn't explain Schaub's inability to move or make sound decisions, but could be telling in regards to his noticeable shortage of arm strength. Schaub has looked genuinely Matt Flynnian in preseason games. Perhaps the sore elbow will be the excuse Dennis Allen needs to put Schaub out of his misery. He's been outplayed by rookie Derek Carr throughout August. Rotoworld.com

  • Charles Johnson has one-catch night vs. Rams
Charles Johnson caught 1-of-2 targets for 13 yards in Saturday's preseason game.

Advice: His grab came deep into garbage time with the second-team offense. Johnson has lots of theoretical upside, but just five catches for 46 yards through three preseason games. He should have a spot on the 53-man roster, but is unlikely to make a re-draft impact this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Manuel struggles in final preseason tune-up
E.J. Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards with one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Bucs.

Advice: The interception wasn't Manuel's fault; Scott Chandler fell down on his route and allowed Dashon Goldson to get an easy pick. But Manuel had a couple of other near-interceptions that he forced into coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that was returned for a touchdown. Manuel's propensity to check down in the preseason has been the bigger concern. Buffalo's offense generated only 82 yards in the first half. Manuel's stat line would have looked a lot worse, but he was able to light up the Bucs' second-stringers in the third quarter. It's worth noting that Manuel was playing without Sammy Watkins. The Bills offensive line was also a major issue, allowing five sacks. In four preseason starts, Manuel has completed 47-of-75 passes (63 percent) for 461 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. He's not on the QB2 radar. Rotoworld.com

  • Lache Seastrunk outplayed by Silas Redd
ESPN 980 Washington's Chris Russell believes sixth-round pick Lache Seastrunk has been outplayed by UDFA Silas Redd in training camp.

Advice: Seastrunk has made some explosive plays against deep reserves in preseason games, but has poor hands and is still unable to pass block. Seastrunk is more talented than Redd, but Redd is a more complete back. Perhaps the Redskins will try to stash Seastrunk on their practice squad. He isn't ready to play. Rotoworld.com

  • C-Mike has nice night against the Bears
Christine Michael rushed eight times for 28 yards and caught 3-of-3 targets for 36 yards and a touchdown in the Seahawks' third preseason game.

Advice: He was the third Seahawks back to enter, behind Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin. Michael and Turbin both got first-team run after Lynch departed, however, with C-Mike handling deep red-zone carries toward the end of Seattle's second drive. Perhaps most promisingly, Michael executed on a first-quarter blitz pickup of Lance Briggs. There are no questions about Michael's running ability, but he still needs to polish the finer points of his game. He fumbled in each of the Seahawks' first two preseason affairs, but displayed ball security on Friday night and was very active in the passing game, which has historically been a weakness for C-Mike. He's a high-upside Dynasty stash, albeit with injury-dependent re-draft value. Rotoworld.com
