  • Jonas Gray the Patriots top big back
ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss confirms Jonas Gray now projects as the Patriots top "big back."

Advice: Gray is ahead of both Brandon Bolden and James White. The 2012 UDFA out of Notre Dame was expected to have a bigger role than the three carries he got in Week 7, but the Patriots got absolutely dominated in time of possession and didn't want to challenge the Jets' elite run defense. In different game-flow situations, Gray could have a real role. He's worth adding in deeper formats. Rotoworld.com

  • Jags not sure if Denard can handle big work
A source tells ESPN Jags reporter Mike DiRocco that the coaches "still aren't sure if [Denard] Robinson is capable of handling a heavy workload each week."

Advice: Robinson ripped apart the Browns' atrocious run defense last week for 22-127-1 and has earned another start. Don't expect 20-carry games to become the norm. The 197-pound "Shoelace" typically won't have gameflow on his side and also Toby Gerhart (foot) is coming back this week to pair with third-down back Jordan Todman. Furthermore, the Jags bottom-five offensive line is going to have its hands more than full with a very strong Dolphins front this week. Rotoworld.com

ESPN Boston says it would be a surprise if Shane Vereen (illness) doesn't play in Sunday's game against the Bears.

Advice: Vereen was under the weather and sat out Friday's practice. It shouldn't affect his role in a fine matchup at home Sunday. Vereen, who played on a career-high 80 percent of the snaps in the first game after Stevan Ridley's season-ending knee injury, is RB2 even in non-PPR formats. Rotoworld.com

"Green likely won't be 100 percent at any point during the year," wrote beat reporter Paul Dehner, who suggests Green's going-forward availability will come down to a pain-management issue. "He may get a shot to get some serious carries in the second half (of the season)," were Graziano's words. Sims is worth stashing in 12- and 14-team leagues. Per beat reporter Coley Harvey, Lewis "sounded a little optimistic" about Green "possibly giving it a shot Sunday." He was a big part of OC Hue Jackson's game plan in Week 1, before dislocating the elbow, racking up three early catches for 37 yards. Jermaine Gresham has done nothing to instill confidence as a pass catcher during Eifert's absence, while A.J. Green (toe) is now hobbled and Marvin Jones (foot) is on I.R. Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer said all of his running backs will "have roles for us," and he'll continue to treat it as a week-to-week situation.

Advice: "I think that’s kind of good for us," Schottenheimer said. "For a defense not to know who they’ve got to prepare for. To know that at any moment it might be a different guy out there." Schottenheimer isn't fooling anyone. Anybody with working eyeballs can see Tre Mason is the Rams' most talented runner. If the Rams want to put the ball in Zac Stacy or Benny Cunningham's hands, they're playing to the defense's advantage. Advice: Floyd used his unreal body control to nearly reel in two more catches on difficult deep targets, but had no shot on his third missed connection, a Philip Rivers pick thrown into double coverage. Welker has now been limited to six grabs for 63 yards and a touchdown over his past three games. Branden Oliver rushed 13 times for 36 yards in San Diego's Week 8 loss to the Broncos, adding seven catches for an additional 27 yards.

Advice: Oliver was lucky to escape with the yards that he did, as he simply got gobbled up by the Broncos' athletic front seven. Oliver didn't have a prayer on over half his carries, and was sitting on -3 yards through his first 12 touches. The Broncos were simply getting too much penetration. The Rams are one of the most lightly-covered teams in the league, so we might not gain clarity until Friday's injury report. • Fisher on RBs: It'll be a week-to-week thing
Coach Jeff Fisher said "it'll be a week-to-week thing" at running back for the Rams.

Advice: "Zac [Stacy] could get 25 carries this week," Fisher continued. "We had some things in early this week. It was working so we decided to stay with [Tre Mason]. It’s nothing that Zac has done or hasn’t done." Fisher clearly hates fantasy football. He's also never been a coach who favors a committee approach in the backfield. CSN Philly reports Darren Sproles (knee) "appears likely" to play Week 8 against the Cardinals.

Advice: After initially fearing a torn ACL, Sproles says he "felt pretty good" at Tuesday's practice. An MRI last week revealed no structural damage and just a mildly sprained MCL. Arizona is yielding the second-fewest PPR points to opposing running backs. Tre Mason led Rams running backs by playing on 27-of-51 snaps in Sunday's win over the Seahawks.

Advice: Benny Cunningham played 19 snaps and Zac Stacy got one. It's clear that Mason has surged to the front of the pile here as the most talented natural runner and is a must-add, but there are major concerns -- most notably in the form of game flow. Mason is a zero in the pass game, which we know is a red flag when a team gets behind. See Andre Williams, Alfred Morris and even Marshawn Lynch for evidence of that. Oliver would have gotten more work had the Chiefs not squeezed the life out of the ball, out-possessing San Diego 39 minutes to 21. Advice: Looking like a legitimate running back, the converted Michigan quarterback mixed chain-moving gains with explosive runs on the perimeter. He handled the 22 touches compared to Storm Johnson's six, and Jordan Todman's one. "Shoelace" should remain Jacksonville's lead back until further notice, even when Toby Gerhart (foot) returns. Advice: In other words, the Saints will use Graham in red-zone packages. He'll test the shoulder in pre-game warmups before making a final decision. Owners can pray for a touchdown, but he's unlikely to see much, if any, action between the 20s. But this is Jimmy Graham. If he suits up, he needs to be in lineups. The Lions are allowing the 16th-most fantasy points to opposing tight ends. Rotoworld.com

  • Pettigrew to see an expanded workload Week 7
Lions TE Brandon Pettigrew is expected to be more involved in the passing game against the Saints.

Advice: Pettigrew has five receptions in six games this season as Eric Ebron and Joseph Fauria have served as the pass-catching tight ends. With Fauria out with an ankle injury and Ebron doubtful with a hamstring, the Lions may have no choice but to get Pettigrew more involved. Even so, he is nothing more than a low-ceiling TE2. • Graham to be a red-zone player if active?
The New Orleans Times-Picayune suggests Jimmy Graham (shoulder, questionable) could be a situational red-zone player if active Sunday.

Advice: We've seen the Saints do this with Graham before, as recently as last season when he often played limited snaps while battling foot and elbow injuries. He was still dominant, closing the season with six touchdowns in the last six games despite playing on just 69.2 percent of the snaps during that span. The bottom line is that if Graham suits up Sunday, he has to be in lineups regardless of role. "It's an injury. It's just like all the other ones I've ever had," he said, reiterating his status as a true game-time call. "It's painful, but we'll see. Maybe in two days I'll feel better." Rotoworld.com

  • Charles Sims hoping to practice next week
Bucs RB Charles Sims (ankle) has not resumed practicing yet.

Advice: Sims, who is on IR with a designation to return, was eligible to resume practicing this week. He hopes he gets clearance to get some work in next week as the Bucs come out of their bye with an eye on Week 10 for his NFL debut. Bucs reporter Pat Yasinskas says the Bucs coaches "seemed infatuated with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield" prior to the injury. With Doug Martin underperforming badly and Bobby Rainey a mediocre talent, Sims is at least worth putting on watch lists. Rotoworld.com

Reggie Bush (ankle) returned to a full practice Friday and is listed as probable for Week 7 against the Saints.

Advice: Bush is thankful the Lions made the decision to hold him out last week. "It helped a lot," Bush said Friday. "It helped me rest my ankle and prepare for this week. I think we made the smart decision by not playing last game and risking further injury and just given myself a week to get back healthy." Rotoworld.com

Chargers RB Donald Brown (concussion) still hasn't been medically cleared.

Advice: He didn't practice again Friday and won't play against the Chiefs, keeping Branden Oliver entrenched as San Diego's every-down back. It's now been 12 days since Brown suffered his concussion. He's taking unusually long to recover. Rotoworld.com

  • Patriots to 'keep going with' Jonas Gray
Coach Bill Belichick said the Patriots will "keep going with" Jonas Gray and see how he seizes the opportunity.

Advice: Gray is officially ahead of Brandon Bolden on the depth chart, as if Thursday night's usage didn't confirm it. It didn't mean a whole lot, as Gray saw just two touches compared to one for Bolden. But we'd expect Gray's role to grow as the "big back" complement to Shane Vereen, who handled 17 touches against the Jets. Gray may never be fantasy-useful, but he could see 8-10 weekly carries. • Jonas Gray rushes twice in Patriots debut
Jonas Gray rushed twice for eight yards in New England's Week 7 win over the Jets.

Advice: Promoted from the practice squad on Thursday, Gray was surprisingly active over James White. He was No. 2 on the depth chart behind Shane Vereen, but it obviously didn't mean much as he touched the ball only two times. Gray is just as likely to be inactive in Week 8 as he is to stay ahead of White and Brandon Bolden. He's not worth the hassle in re-draft leagues for the time being. Rotoworld.com

  • Shane Vereen catches two touchdowns vs. Jets
Operating as the Patriots' clear lead back, Shane Vereen rushed 12 times for 47 yards in New England's Week 7 win over the Jets, adding five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns.

Advice: Vereen's 17 touches were 14 more than Jonas Gray and Brandon Bolden combined. He notched a four-yard rush on New England's first play from scrimmage, and got free for a 49-yard touchdown reception just three plays later. Vereen streaked down the sideline, schooling Antonio Allen to get himself wide open. Vereen's second score was a three-yard grab where he ran circles around Jets LB Demario Davis in the end zone. Most encouragingly, it was Vereen, and not New England's "big back" duo, who was called on to help kill the clock in the fourth quarter. As we've learned the hard way from coach Bill Belichick, there's no way to count on that kind of usage going forward, but Vereen will be a top 15-16 option for Week 8 when the Pats host the Bears. • Pats promote RB Jonas Gray to 53-man roster
Patriots promoted RB Jonas Gray from the practice squad.

Advice: OG Chris Barker has also been promoted. A third-year undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame, Gray will be No. 3 in the Patriots' "big back" rotation behind Brandon Bolden and James White, but it's not outside the realm of possibility that he'll get an opportunity to establish the "hot hand." He's worth a flier in 14-team leagues if you're absolutely bereft of options at running back. Rotoworld.com
