    • DeAngelo Williams may not return to Carolina
ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton believes the Panthers will move on from RB DeAngelo Williams following the season.

Advice: After years of struggling under the dead-money weight of Williams' contract, the Panthers will finally be in a position to cut loose the aging running back this offseason. Williams is only due $1.85 million in base salary in 2015, but carries a cap hit of $6.33 million for next season. The cap-strapped Panthers could save around $2 million on the 2015 cap by designating Williams a post-June 1 cut. With his play on the field slipping, it is an easy move for Carolina to make. • Williams probable, but Stewart will start
DeAngelo Williams (hand) is listed as probable for Week 17 against the Falcons, but Jonathan Stewart is still expected to start.

Advice: Coach Ron Rivera was unwilling to discuss the specifics of the running back rotation, but it is safe to assume the red-hot Stewart will retain most of the work even if Williams plays. Stewart has rushed for a league-high 437 yards over the past four games and has helped spark the Panthers to three straight wins. He is a solid RB2 against the Falcons. Rotoworld.com

    • Quizz expected to lead Week 17 backfield
The Atlanta Journal-Sentinel expects Jacquizz Rodgers -- not Devonta Freeman -- to handle the "bulk of the carries" in Week 17 against the Panthers.

Advice: Quizz is also expected to start. We're betting on a 60:40 or 55:45 split between Rodgers and Freeman, with Rodgers playing a bit more and handling a few more touches. Freeman offers more upside because he has more big-play ability, but in a season-long league neither would be considered more than a flex option. Rotoworld.com

ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton confirms the team will start Jonathan Stewart. Stewart can expect traditional feature back work. Jacquizz Rodgers is expected to be the Falcons' starting running back in Week 17 against the Panthers.

Advice: Devonta Freeman will rotate in. Rodgers is a superior pass protector and will likely play more snaps than Freeman, just as he did following Steven Jackson's Week 16 injury. Freeman possesses more upside, but "Quizz" may be a better bet for usage. The situation is a tricky one to navigate in Week 17 fantasy leagues. Rodgers is priced cheaper on daily sites than Freeman. ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss thinks James White could be the team's pass-catching back in 2015.

Advice: With Shane Vereen scheduled to become a free agent in March, White could make the leap in 2015. The 130th pick in May's draft was standout in OTAs and minicamp, but couldn't put it together in the preseason and has played just 27 offensive snaps as a rookie. Ronnie Hillman (foot) practiced in full Wednesday for the first time since his Week 10 injury.

Advice: Hillman practiced on a limited basis last week, but was ruled inactive on Monday night against the Bengals. The Broncos often make their injured players practice for two weeks before activating them. So we'd consider Hillman on track to play against the Raiders in Week 17, serving as one of C.J. Steven Jackson (quad) is not expected to play in Sunday's Week 17 game against the Panthers.

Advice: At age 31, Jackson wasn't going to recover from a pulled quad muscle in seven days. So the Falcons will roll into their showdown for the NFC South with a committee of Devonta Freeman and Jacquizz Rodgers at running back. Practice squad callup Jerome Smith will be the No. 3 back. Note that following S-Jax's injury last week, Rodgers played 25 snaps compared to 18 for Freeman. Quizz will handle more of the third-down work and pass game duties, while the rookie handles more base work. We far prefer Freeman as the plug-n-play -- he's more versatile and a better inside runner. Rotoworld.com

Given Jackson's age (31) and history of soft tissue injuries, we'll consider him very questionable for Sunday's showdown with the Panthers. LeGarrette Blount (shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 16.

Advice: Blount was expected to play after being limited in practice throughout week. The Patriots will now be down to Jonas Gray and Shane Vereen against the Jets. Julian Edelman (concussion) has also been ruled out for Sunday's game. Rotoworld.com

Frank Gore (concussion) is active for Week 16 against the Chargers.

Advice: Gore was cleared to play after practicing on a limited basis. He'll handle all of the carries with Carlos Hyde sidelined. The 49ers inactives are WR Stevie Johnson, CB Tramaine Brock, OLB Ahmad Brooks, OG Joe Looney, QB Josh Johnson, and OG Andrew Tiller. Rotoworld.com

    • Report: Frank Gore will start vs. Chargers
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Frank Gore (concussion) will play in Saturday night's game against the Chargers.

Advice: Gore practiced on a limited basis and has cleared his concussion protocols. With Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) ruled out, he should see an increased workload. Gore is a top-25 running back play for Week 16. Rotoworld.com

    • LeGarrette Blount listed questionable
LeGarrette Blount (shoulder) remained limited in Friday's practice and is listed as questionable for Week 16.

Advice: Blount played only 16 snaps last week due to his shoulder injury. His Week 16 status isn't in doubt, but he faces an uncertain workload at less than 100 percent. Blount is an RB3 with touchdown upside against the Jets. Rotoworld.com

Frank Gore (concussion) is listed as questionable for Week 16.

Advice: He was limited in Friday's practice. The 49ers host the Chargers on Saturday Night Football. Beat writers are guessing Gore will play, but it's not a guarantee. Carlos Hyde has already been ruled out. If Gore does receive clearance by Saturday, he will be a high-end flex option against San Diego. Rotoworld.com

Ryan Mathews (ankle) is listed as out for Week 16 against the 49ers.

Advice: Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will share the backfield on Saturday against San Francisco. It's a fantasy situation to avoid wherever possible. Oliver got more Week 15 touches than Brown and would be the superior flex gamble. Rotoworld.com

    • DeAngelo Williams expected to miss Week 16
Panthers coach Ron Rivera indicated Friday that DeAngelo Williams (questionable, hand) will not play Sunday at Cleveland.

Advice: Rivera left open the possibility of Williams being active on game day as an "emergency back," but he's not going to be a factor unless other running backs get injured during the game. Jonathan Stewart is an RB2 against the Browns' weak run defense. Mike Tolbert will be second in line for backfield work. Rotoworld.com

    • Jonathan Stewart will make start vs. Browns
Coach Ron Rivera announced Jonathan Stewart will start Week 16 against the Browns.

Advice: DeAngelo Williams (hand) will only be used in an "emergency," leaving Stewart to handle another 20-plus carries against a suspect Cleveland run defense. With Cam Newton back under center, it should open up more running lanes than Stewart saw with Derek Anderson in Week 15. Stewart is in the RB2 discussion. Rotoworld.com

    • Toby Gerhart leaves win late with rib injury
Toby Gerhart rushed 12 times for 53 yards and a touchdown before leaving the Jaguars' Week 16 win over the Titans with a rib injury.

Advice: He added a seven-yard reception. Shaken up in the second half, Gerhart briefly played through what was billed as a rib "contusion," but was then ruled out late in the fourth quarter. He operated as the Jags' clear lead back before going down, but ceded some touches to Storm Johnson and Jordan Todman. Gerhart was feisty between the tackles, shedding defenders and showing off some spin moves. He looked miserably slow when the Jags tried to send him around the edge, however. Gerhart should be considered questionable for next week's finale against the Texans. Rotoworld.com

LeGarrette Blount (shoulder) remained limited in Thursday's practice.

Advice: Blount's Week 16 availability isn't in doubt, but his role is muddled with the re-emergence of Jonas Gray. Blount will be a touchdown-dependent FLEX play for the fantasy finals. Players who are still alive in season-long leagues need to do better. Rotoworld.com

    • Frank Gore expected to play versus Chargers
Frank Gore is "moving through the concussion protocol," and expected to start Saturday's game against the Chargers.

Advice: Gore practiced on Thursday, getting in a limited session. It's excellent news for the 49ers, as Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) is expected to be sidelined. Struggling mightily in the second half of the season, Gore will be a middling FLEX play for the fantasy finals. He'll be backed up by FB Bruce Miller and Alfonso Smith. Rotoworld.com

49ers RB Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) remained sidelined Thursday.

Advice: Hyde has already said he'd need a "miracle" to suit up against the Chargers on Saturday. With Frank Gore (concussion) also looking shaky, the 49ers could be forced to roll with Bruce Miller and Alfonso Smith at running back. Rotoworld.com

    • D-Will gets in another 'limited' practice
DeAngelo Williams (hand) remained limited in Thursday's practice.

Advice: Barring a setback, D-Will should return after a two-game absence, though the Panthers aren't sure how he'll fare in the passing game. In theory, he'll cut into Jonathan Stewart's workload, but we wouldn't be surprised if Williams is nothing more than a breather option for J-Stew, who has run well in Williams' absence. D-Will is not on the fantasy radar for Week 16. Rotoworld.com

    • Ryan Mathews sitting out again on Thursday
Ryan Mathews (ankle) remained sidelined Thursday.

Advice: Mathews "wasn't close" to playing in Week 15, and appears all but guaranteed to miss his second-straight game. The oft-injured 2010 first rounder could be heading into free agency having appeared in just 6-of-16 games this season. Branden Oliver and Donald Brown will form a low-upside committee against the 49ers. Rotoworld.com

    • Broncos hoping Hillman returns to field soon
The Broncos hope to have Ronnie Hillman (foot) back "if not this week at Cincinnati then in the season finale."

Advice: The Broncos could put Hillman to use as a complement to C.J. Anderson, who's averaged an unruly 27.25 carries per game over the past month. Shifty and quick, Hillman would make more sense as a true change-of-pace than Juwan Thompson, who is a big back like Anderson. Even if Hillman plays Monday night at Cincinnati, it would be a surprise if he handled more than 7-9 touches. Rotoworld.com

Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) said he does not expect to play in Saturday's game against the Chargers barring a miracle.

Advice: Despite receiving good news following an MRI, it doesn't look like Hyde is going to be able to go on this short week. It's terrible timing, as Frank Gore (concussion) is in serious doubt as well. It's certainly possible the 49ers will be forced to roll with Alfonso Smith and Phillip Tanner at running back Saturday. Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) remained sidelined at Wednesday's practice.

Advice: Frank Gore (concussion) also remained out on Wednesday. The 49ers are on a short week with a game against the Chargers on Saturday night. With both Hyde and Gore uncertain for Week 16, the 49ers signed RB Phillip Tanner on Wednesday. Alfonso Smith and Tanner are the lone healthy backs on the roster. Rotoworld.com

LeGarrette Blount (shoulder) was limited in Wednesday's practice.

Advice: Blount was out-snapped and out-touched by Jonas Gray last week but did rush for 17 yards and one touchdown on eight carries. We'd tentatively expect Blount to play against the Jets, but he's barely on the RB3 radar. Rotoworld.com
