  • Report: Bills paying Orton $5 million in 2014
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports new Bills QB Kyle Orton will make $5 million this season.

Advice: As former Rotoworlder Chris Wesseling points out, that's as much as Josh McCown is making for the Bucs. The Bills have clearly lost faith in E.J. Manuel, and appear ready to turn to Orton at a moment's notice. Manuel will keep his starting job to begin the season as Orton gets up to speed on the playbook, but has no room for error. With the Bills hoping to field one of the league's most run-heavy offenses, Orton will be a bottom-barrel QB2 if/when he gets the call to replace Manuel. Rotoworld.com

  • Clyde Gates amongst Jets' cuts
Jets waived/released WR Clyde Gates, OG William Campbell, LB Troy Davis, CB Brandon Dixon, LB A.J. Edds, DT Tevita Finau, DL Kerry Hyder, LB Garrett McIntyre, S Rontez Miles, TE Chris Pantale, OT Brent Qvale, CB Jeremy Reeves, OG Caleb Schlauderaff and DE Zach Thompson.

Advice: A former Dolphins fourth-rounder, Gates, 28, appeared in six games for the Jets last season, catching 12 passes. Gates annually shines in pad-less practices, but is just about out of regular-season chances. Rotoworld.com

  • Stevan Ridley makes 53-man roster
Stevan Ridley has made the 53-man roster.

Advice: Speculation over the last week had Ridley's roster spot in danger thanks to his error-repeating ways. But the Patriots were never likely to cut him as they know he's their best inside runner -- and it isn't even close. If Ridley can simply hold onto the football this season, he's going to push for double-digit touchdowns. James White has been strikingly unimpressive this preseason. Rotoworld.com

  • Saints release Robert Meachem
Saints waived/released WR Robert Meachem, OLB Keyunta Dawson, FB Greg Jones, OT Thomas Welch, C Matt Armstrong, WR Brandon Coleman, ILB Todd Davis, WR Charles Hawkins, TE Nic Jacobs, OG Marcel Jones, WR Seantavius Jones, OT Tavon Rooks, RB Derrick Strozier, NT Lawrence Virgil, S Pierre Warren and G/T Jason Weaver.

Advice: Meachem was hoping to hang on as a situational deep threat. One month shy of his 30th birthday, he should latch on elsewhere after reviving his career in New Orleans last season. Going on 29, Dawon appeared in eight games between the Saints and Titans in 2013. Rotoworld.com

  • Michael Cox loses roster spot to Hillis
Giants waived or released RB Michael Cox, DE Jordan Stanton, RB Kendall Gaskins, DB Thomas Gordon, WR Julian Talley, OL Roger Gaines, DB Chandler Fenner, OL Mark Asper and LB Terrell Manning.

Advice: Cox got more opportunities than he deserved last season thanks to all the injuries in the Giants' backfield. He ended up with 22 carries for 43 yards and no touchdowns. The Giants have decided to keep Peyton Hillis as their No. 3 running back behind Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams. Rotoworld.com

  • Eagles open to trading 3rd-string QB Barkley
"Multiple sources" tell Philly.com's Jimmy Kempski that the Eagles are "open" to trading third-string QB Matt Barkley.

Advice: This report was echoed by Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News. Barkley is a relatively unattractive trade target with limited physical tools, and coming off a ho-hum preseason. Perhaps he'd fetch a sixth- or seventh-round pick. Rotoworld.com

  • Eagles cut K Alex Henery
    Eagles waived K Alex Henery.

Advice: Henery has a weak leg and was just 1-of-3 on field goals this preseason, while producing just eight touchbacks on 17 kickoffs. He lost out to UDFA Cody Parkey, who has a booming leg and was acquired from the Colts this week. Rotoworld.com

    Lions waived WR Kris Durham.

Advice: Durham lasted longer in Detroit than anyone expected. The Lions finally upgraded their receiving corps in the offseason. They can finally say goodbye to Durham. He dropped too many passes and has always been a fringe talent. Rotoworld.com

  • Chargers waive/injured WR Vincent Brown
    Chargers waive/injured WR Vincent Brown.

Advice: Brown hasn't practiced since July 25, but is reportedly near full health. The Union-Tribune San Diego reports Brown "won't be on the Chargers' 53-man roster," so it sounds like he could end up getting released with an injury settlement. The No. 82 overall pick of the 2011 draft, Brown was an exciting prospect after catching 19 passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns as a rookie, but was never the same after missing all of 2012 with a broken ankle. Brown moved like a tight end last season as he limped to a 41/472/1 line across 16 games. Rotoworld.com

  • RB Alex Green cut by Jets
    Jets released RB Alex Green.

Advice: The Jets have dumped both Green and Daryl Richardson, leaving only Bilal Powell behind Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory. Green, a third-round pick of the Packers in 2011, has a pitiful 3.42 YPC average on his 149 career carries. Rotoworld.com

  • Fins finally admit mistake, cut Daniel Thomas
Dolphins waived RB Daniel Thomas and RB/KR Marcus Thigpen.

Advice: The Fins finally admit their mistake on Thomas, whom ex-GM Jeff Ireland traded up to select in the second round of the 2011 draft. Thomas almost single-handedly held Miami's running game hostage for the past three seasons. The team will now move forward with Lamar Miller, Knowshon Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams, although we wouldn't rule out the Dolphins putting in a waiver claim on a tailback toward the end of final cuts. Patriots waived WR Josh Boyce.

Advice: Boyce fell behind Kenbrell Thompkins a year ago and never gained ground. The Patriots will likely try to sneak their 2013 fourth-rounder onto the practice squad, but he's a candidate to get claimed. Boyce ran a 4.38 and posted an explosive 10-foot-11 broad jump at his Combine. Rotoworld.com

    Redskins waived RB Chris Thompson.

    Panthers waived WR Tavarres King.

Advice: King was thought to be the favorite for situational deep threat duties after Tiquan Underwood was released. He had a solid preseason opener, but followed it up with three lackluster efforts. King will likely get another shot on a receiver-needy team thanks to his 4.40 wheels and 6'1/200 size. Rotoworld.com

    Browns released RB Dion Lewis.

Advice: Lewis was thought to be the "favorite" for the Browns' No. 3 running back job just a week ago, but Isaiah Crowell's big night in the team's final preseason game may have changed those plans. Lewis has a decent shot to latch on somewhere else as a change of pace option. Rotoworld.com

  • Bills sign Kyle Orton to back up E.J. Manuel
Bills signed QB Kyle Orton to a one-year contract.

Advice: Orton, 31, made one start for the Cowboys last season in an NFC East win-or-go-home tilt with the Eagles. He scattered check down after check down amongst 46 pass attempts, completing 30 for 358 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. Orton was on the verge of retirement before the Bills lured him back into the league, but it's fair to wonder if he eventually becomes a better option than E.J. Manuel. For now, Orton will push Jeff Tuel for the backup job. Rotoworld.com

  • Ridley now expected to make Patriots roster
ESPN Boston now has Stevan Ridley making the Patriots' 53-man roster after leaving him off it earlier this week.

Advice: Beat writer Mike Reiss "played a hunch" last time around, but now admits it "looks like that was off the mark." Last week, Reiss left Ridley off the roster in favor of Jonas Gray. Gray now gets the boot, and Ridley makes it because rookie James White hasn't shown enough. We expect Vereen to play the vast majority of running back snaps in New England, but Ridley has the early edge for short-yardage and goal-line work with an opportunity to expand his role with good play. We still like Ridley at his eighth-round ADP as a boom-or-bust RB2. Rotoworld.com

ESPN Dolphins reporter James Walker doesn't expected Daniel Thomas to make the 53-man roster.

Advice: Thomas made his preseason debut Thursday, rushing 13 times for 38 yards (2.9 YPC) and one touchdown. He simply hasn't done enough this summer to earn a roster spot. Walker expects the Dolphins to keep just three running backs, Lamar Miller, Knowshon Moreno, and UDFA Damien Williams. Rotoworld.com

Daniel Thomas (hamstring) will play in the Dolphins' preseason finale.

Advice: He better. Thomas is on the roster bubble. He's missed most of camp and the first three preseason games with a balky hamstring. Thomas is competing with UDFAs Damien Williams and Orleans Darkwa for the No. 3 job. No longer on scholarship under ex-GM Jeff Ireland, Thomas needs to turn heads Thursday. Rotoworld.com

Eagles K Alex Henery is 1-of-3 on field goals this preseason.

Advice: Henery is on thin ice in Philly, as evidenced by last week's trade for Cody Parkey. The incumbent remains the favorite, but we'd look for a kicker carrying more confidence into Week 1 for our fantasy roster. Rotoworld.com

  • Stevan Ridley not a lock for final roster?
ESPN Boston does not have Stevan Ridley making the 53-man roster in their latest projection.

Advice: We'd be stunned if Ridley gets cut, as he's clearly the team's best inside running option provided he doesn't fumble. But the projection comes from ace beat man Mike Reiss, who is not prone to hyperbole. Ridley played just 11 snaps in Friday night's third preseason game, and did lose a fumble in the second preseason game. Reiss has the Patriots keeping four running backs on the active roster (Shane Vereen, James White, Brandon Bolden, Jonas Gray) and one on the practice squad (Roy Finch). Rotoworld.com

  • Dion Lewis favorite for Browns No. 3 RB job
Coach Mike Pettine says Dion Lewis is the favorite for the Browns' No. 3 running back job.

Advice: He's pretty clearly ahead of UDFA Isaiah Crowell for the job behind Ben Tate and Terrance West. "Dion Lewis, I think, has separated himself from the other guys as far as the third running back spot," Pettine said. "But I would still say that that job is open." Lewis only has 10 carries for 21 yards this preseason. Crowell is barely on the radar, with three yards on two attempts. Rotoworld.com

Dion Lewis rushed three times for eight yards in Saturday's preseason game, adding two catches for 10 yards.

Advice: It was his best night of the preseason, which should tell you all you need to know about Lewis' August. He has 10 rushes for 21 yards, and only four catches for 16 yards. He has one score and a lost fumble. Lewis is squarely on the roster bubble. Rotoworld.com

Stevan Ridley rushed for 28 yards on 8 carries in the Patriots' third preseason game.

Advice: Ridley only saw six snaps in the first half, but did play extensively in the first-team offenses' lone drive following the break. Most importantly Ridley did not put the ball on the ground Friday night. With James White struggling, Ridley should hold onto the early-down and short-yardage work as long as he can hold onto the ball. Ridley has 19 carries for 75 yards this preseason. Rotoworld.com

Matt Barkley completed 4-of-4 passes for 37 yards in Thursday night's preseason game versus Pittsburgh.

Advice: He played behind Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez, and ahead of only G.J. Kinne. Barkley is 20-of-32 passing for 242 yards this preseason, tossing two touchdowns and two interceptions. The Eagles are likely to keep him as their third-stringer this year, but Barkley has put zero heat on Sanchez's backup job. Rotoworld.com
