    • Quizz expected to lead Week 17 backfield
The Atlanta Journal-Sentinel expects Jacquizz Rodgers -- not Devonta Freeman -- to handle the "bulk of the carries" in Week 17 against the Panthers.

Advice: Quizz is also expected to start. We're betting on a 60:40 or 55:45 split between Rodgers and Freeman, with Rodgers playing a bit more and handling a few more touches. Freeman offers more upside because he has more big-play ability, but in a season-long league neither would be considered more than a flex option. Rotoworld.com

Alex Smith has been ruled out for Week 17 against the Chargers with a lacerated spleen.

Advice: Smith was hurt in Week 16, but played through it and practiced earlier this week. He went to the training staff and said he didn't feel right. The injury was revealed, and Chase Daniel is now in the saddle as the starting quarterback in an extremely important finale against San Diego. In order to make the playoffs, the Chiefs need to win and have the Texans and Ravens lose. Much like Smith, Daniel is a game manager with a weak arm and plus athleticism. ESPN Patriots reporter Mike Reiss thinks James White could be the team's pass-catching back in 2015.

Advice: With Shane Vereen scheduled to become a free agent in March, White could make the leap in 2015. The 130th pick in May's draft was standout in OTAs and minicamp, but couldn't put it together in the preseason and has played just 27 offensive snaps as a rookie. The Patriots are still high on White. He's a player to target in Dynasty leagues with his value at the lowest it's been. Rotoworld.com

The Giants expect Larry Donnell to take another big leap forward in 2015.

Advice: Per ESPN's Dan Graziano, the Giants believe in Donnell as a long-term starting tight end. They think he'll "develop into a dynamic player who is a huge part of Ben McAdoo's offense." Donnell got off to a torrid start to the season, scoring six touchdowns the first 11 weeks. But the past five games, Donnell has averaged just three catches for 32 yards per game with zero scores. With Victor Cruz returning to full health behind Odell Beckham in 2015, Donnell should be no higher than No. 3 in line for targets. He'll have to make his hay in the red zone. Rotoworld.com

Steven Jackson (quad) is not expected to play in Sunday's Week 17 game against the Panthers.

Advice: At age 31, Jackson wasn't going to recover from a pulled quad muscle in seven days. So the Falcons will roll into their showdown for the NFC South with a committee of Devonta Freeman and Jacquizz Rodgers at running back. Practice squad callup Jerome Smith will be the No. 3 back. Note that following S-Jax's injury last week, Rodgers played 25 snaps compared to 18 for Freeman. Quizz will handle more of the third-down work and pass game duties, while the rookie handles more base work. We far prefer Freeman as the plug-n-play -- he's more versatile and a better inside runner. Rotoworld.com

Given Jackson's age (31) and history of soft tissue injuries, we'll consider him very questionable for Sunday's showdown with the Panthers. • Larry Donnell doesn't get in on party
Larry Donnell caught four passes for 42 yards in Sunday's Week 16 win at St. Louis.

Advice: Donnell didn't really get in on the party during a day in which Eli Manning threw for 391 yards and three scores. LD also missed out last week (2-11-0) when Manning went for 250 yards and three more touchdowns. Donnell, who hasn't scored since Week 11, wraps the season against the Eagles next week. Rotoworld.com

    • Alex Smith goes in shell as Chiefs lose
Alex Smith completed 31-of-45 passes for 311 yards in Kansas City's 20-12, Week 16 loss to the Steelers.

Advice: He added two rushes for 14 yards. It was a typical Smith game, as he refused to take shots down the field, and too often tucked the ball and ran. The latter was a big part of the reason Smith was rung up for six sacks. Smith simply refuses to attempts passes into tight windows, and it cost the Chiefs big time today. On one of Smith's rare deep balls, he overshot Albert Wilson on what would have been a 65-yard touchdown. Smith avoids turnovers, but his total unwillingness to shoot for big plays makes him a hard sell at $76 million. Kansas City hosts the Chargers in a pivotal divisional game in Week 17. Rotoworld.com

Roddy White caught 6-of-9 targets for 55 yards Week 16 against the Saints.

Advice: White dropped a longish catch that would have made his stat line look a little prettier, but the reality is White does not have a ton of juice left in his legs. He will have a decent matchup against the Panthers Week 17. Rotoworld.com

Aaron Rodgers completed 31-of-40 passes for 318 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's Week 16 win over the Bucs.

Advice: Rodgers mostly had to settle for check downs, targeting Randall Cobb 14 times. His touchdown didn't come until late in the fourth quarter on a one-yard pass to Jordy Nelson. Rodgers suffered an ankle injury on a sack, but didn't miss any time. It was another disappointing start after he was held without a touchdown last week. With the win, the Packers have officially clinched a playoff spot. Rotoworld.com

Ben Roethlisberger completed 18-of-25 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown in Pittsburgh's 20-12, Week 16 win over the Chiefs.

Advice: Big Ben was slowed by the Chiefs' elite pass defense, but found just enough cushions to propel the Steelers to their 10th win, and a Wild Card berth. Pittsburgh can still clinch the division if they beat the Bengals in Week 17. Ben was lucky to escape without a turnover, as he appeared to lose a first-half fumble, but it was ruled an incomplete pass upon a dubious review. Ben also tweaked his right knee, but was no worse for the wear after running to the locker room for some brief treatment. Rotoworld.com

    • Freeman gets eight touches with Jackson hurt
Devonta Freeman rushed five times for 36 yards and a touchdown Week 16 against the Saints, adding 3 catches for 48 yards.

Advice: Freeman busted through a seam on the right side of the Falcons' line, made the safety miss and raced 31-yards to the house to give the Falcons a 20-7 lead in the third quarter. It was probably the most impressive run by a Falcons back this season, but the coaching staff still limited Freeman's touches even with Steven Jackson (quad) sidelined. Jacquizz Rodgers averaged 2.6 yards per carry on 11 totes. Freeman could have a decent role against the Panthers Week 17 if Jackson is forced to miss. Rotoworld.com

Julio Jones caught 7-of-8 targets for 107 yards Week 16 against the Saints.

Advice: Jones did not play every snap, but he played the vast majority despite not practicing at all leading up to the game. Jones did not appear to be 100 percent healthy, but he still made several big plays including a huge 24-yard grab that set up the Falcons for a touchdown with little time left in the second quarter. Jones appeared to escape the game without any setbacks, meaning he should be good to go for the winner take all game against the Panthers next week. Rotoworld.com

Joique Bell rushed 13 times for 74 yards with one touchdown and caught two passes for 13 yards in Sunday's 20-14 Week 16 win at Chicago.

Advice: Bell was benched for the entire first quarter due to some kind of team rules violation. But it was business as usual after he got his first snap with 12:36 left in the second quarter. Bell was the feature back, hogging clock-killing and red-zone work even though Reggie Bush was looking extremely spry. The highlight was a madden-style 17-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that gave the Lions a lead they would hold. Earlier, Matthew Stafford barely missed Bell on a wheel route that would have gone for a touchdown. The Lions close the regular season at Green Bay next week, a game that will decide the NFC North. Advice: Jackson's body language on the sideline did not look good, and he was ruled out for the game shortly after halftime. According to Jay Adams of the Falcons' official site, Julio Jones (oblique) is "really passing the eye test" in warmups.

Advice: Adams is an employee of the team, so it's possible he's wearing rose-colored glasses. But his observations are worth passing along. Adams says Julio "looks strong, loose, ready" and is "running well." The Falcons desperately need to win this game over the Saints and desperately need their No. 1 WR as more than a decoy. Julio Jones (strained oblique) is officially active for Week 16 against the Saints.

Advice: The Falcons reportedly saw enough from Jones in a pre-game workout to make him active despite Jones missing every practice this week. Jones could be limited by his oblique injury, but the buzz around Falcons' camp has always been he would be more than a decoy if active. The Washington Post's Jason Reid writes Robert Griffin III is "expected to return" to the Redskins in 2015.

Advice: Profootballtalk reports RGIII's job status for 2015 was never in danger despite all of the reports stating otherwise in recent weeks. RGIII looked like his vintage self in a Saturday afternoon win over the Eagles, and suddenly things are peachy in D.C. RGIII has an opportunity to finish the season on a high note against the Cowboys in Week 17. Whether Jay Gruden returns as head coach remains unclear, but he's reportedly been told he'll be back. NFL Network's Albert Breer reports the Falcons are "optimistic" Julio Jones (hip) will play Week 16 against the Saints.

Advice: Although he didn't practice at all this week, Jones ran off to the side each day and participated in Saturday's walkthrough. His final hurdle will be a pregame workout ahead of the 1 PM ET kickoff. This is the most important game of the season for the Falcons. Robert Griffin III completed 16-of-23 passes for 220 yards and an interception in Saturday's Week 16 win over the Eagles.

Advice: Griffin looked more decisive from the pocket, and was able to go through his progressions when given time. His highlights were two 50-plus yard throws to DeSean Jackson. Grifin's interception came trying to force a pass to Jackson in double coverage, but he bounced back and led Washington to a game-winning drive. Griffin has a matchup against Dallas in Week 17. Lions OC Joe Lombardi conceded Joique Bell is the team's No. 1 running back, ahead of Reggie Bush.

Advice: It would be difficult to claim anything else. Bell has 33 carries to Bush's 11 over the last two weeks and has out-touched Bush 42-16 over that span. Bell has at least 10 carries in 12-of-13 games this season. Bush has managed that feat just twice. Bell is the clear lead back and is a good bet for 20 touches against a leaky Bears' defense. Toby Gerhart rushed 12 times for 53 yards and a touchdown before leaving the Jaguars' Week 16 win over the Titans with a rib injury.

Advice: He added a seven-yard reception. Shaken up in the second half, Gerhart briefly played through what was billed as a rib "contusion," but was then ruled out late in the fourth quarter. He operated as the Jags' clear lead back before going down, but ceded some touches to Storm Johnson and Jordan Todman. Gerhart was feisty between the tackles, shedding defenders and showing off some spin moves. He looked miserably slow when the Jags tried to send him around the edge, however. Advice: According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, Allen is "not considered a candidate for injured reserve." He has yet to undergo surgery, and "no such procedure is currently planned." It's interesting Allen and the Chargers are apparently so optimistic about an injury that typically sidelines players for the better part of two months, but we strongly suspect he's played his final snap of the 2014-15 campaign. • Gruden's RGIII comments softer in context
Redskins coach Jay Gruden's Tuesday comments about Robert Griffin III come across much softer in context.

Advice: "(It's) important for us to try to have some success on first and second down so we don’t have to drop back and throw it 30 times a game," Gruden said. "(When) you get behind, you get in third down, you get behind the chains, those have to be accomplished — the drop-back reads and progressions have to be accomplished, and that’s something we’re fighting through right now." Gruden's comments are non-controversial when taken in their full form, but came across as inflammatory in a series of tweets from the conference call. It took hours for the comments to be presented in their proper context. Regardless of today's brouhaha, Gruden is clearly not RGIII's No. 1 fan. It's hard to see the two coexisting for 2015. Speaking Tuesday, coach Jay Gruden said it's important for the Redskins to get an early lead in Saturday's game against the Eagles so they can limit Robert Griffin III's dropbacks and reading of the defense.

Advice: Gruden might as well have just come out and said he thinks RGIII stinks. Gruden also said Griffin needs to "get up quicker," and "avoid awkward hits and falls." He wants RGIII to be "more savvy." Gruden hates the way RGIII plays quarterback, and he's making sure he gets it on the public record before the offseason. Grudes has supposedly been told he'll be back for 2015, so it's seeming safer and safer to assume Griffin is a goner in Washington. Rotoworld.com

Ryan Mathews (ankle) sat out of Tuesday's practice.

Advice: The Chargers are playing the 49ers on Saturday, so they're starting their practice week on Tuesday. Per reporter Michael Gehlken, Mathews wasn't "particularly close" to suiting up for Sunday's loss to the Broncos. That would suggest he's not a good bet to return for Week 16, which would leave Branden Oliver, Donald Brown and Ronnie Brown to again form a committee. • Keenan Allen diagnosed with broken collarbone
Keenan Allen has been diagnosed with a broken collarbone in addition to his ankle injury, and is likely done for the regular season.

Advice: Strangely, the Chargers have yet to formally rule Allen for Week 16, but barring a Bolts Super Bowl run, he's almost certainly played his final snap of the 2014-15 season. It appears the only reason for hope is that Allen briefly played through the injury in Week 15. It's a massive blow for the Chargers' scuffling offense, as Allen had really come on of late, catching 49 passes over his past eight games. He'll close the book on his second regular season the owner of a 77/783/4 line. Not a bad year, but a major downgrade from Allen's rookie campaign. He averaged just 10.2 yards per catch after posting a 14.7 mark in 2013. Nevertheless, Allen is only 22, and an elite route runner. He remains a strong hold as a WR2 in dynasty leagues. Rotoworld.com
