  • Josh Boyce was waived/injured
Updating a previous item, Patriots waived/injured WR Josh Boyce.

Advice: It was initially reported that Boyce was flat-out cut. Instead, he'll pass through waivers and head to the Patriots I.R. list, where he'll either miss the entire season or later be released with an injury settlement. It'll probably be the latter. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:15 pm

  • Josh Boyce amongst Patriots' initial cuts
Patriots waived WR Josh Boyce, WR Jonathan Krause, TE Jimmay Mundine, DL Joe Vellano and LB Dekoda Watson.

Advice: A 2013 fourth-rounder, it's the second year in a row Boyce hasn't survived through final cuts. Although Boyce ended up making one 2014 appearance, this should be the end of the line for his time with the Patriots. Boyce has serious speed, but has dealt with injuries, and never got in rhythm with Tom Brady. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:50 pm

  • Miami 'quietly hopeful' about Parker's status
DeVante Parker (foot) resumed practicing Monday, and the Dolphins are "quietly hopeful" he'll be ready for Week 1.

Advice: Parker's limited session on Monday was his first practice of any kind since his June operation. With only 13 days to get in game shape, Parker will undoubtedly will be on a snap count for the opener, but he could be worked into the offense quickly. Parker remains worth stashing as a WR4/5. Advice: Coach Pete Carroll initially claimed Richardson might participate in camp after undergoing ACL surgery in late January, but Week 7 is his earliest possible return date. • Jordan Norwood has 7 preseason catches
Broncos WR Jordan Norwood has seven catches for 67 yards this preseason.

Advice: Norwood played extensively with the Peyton Manning group in Denver's third preseason game, replacing Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring) at slot receiver. When the Broncos' receiver crew is fully healthy, Sanders will man the inside in three-wide sets, with Demaryius Thomas and Cody Latimer aligning on the perimeter. Norwood is a crafty slot man, but he's low on talent as a 29-year-old former UDFA out of Penn State. He's just completing for a roster spot in Denver. Norwood missed all of 2014 with a torn ACL. ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss wouldn't rule out the Patriots making a run at free agent Fred Jackson.

Advice: Reiss isn't reporting the Pats are already displaying interest, but bases his guess on coach Bill Belichick's longtime affinity for his division rival, and the team's unsettled situation at running back. Advice: "As Coach has always said — I’m not saying anything out of the blue — it’s a running back by committee crew," Rivers said. "It’s going to be a team effort in that bunch. We’re going to need all of them to carry the load in the run game and to catch the ball out of the backfield." NFL Network's Ian Rapoport expects the Bills to cut a quarterback after naming Tyrod Taylor their starter.

Advice: Coach Rex Ryan has said the team would probably keep three quarterbacks, but he has been anything but forthcoming about his quarterbacks during the last month. E.J. Manuel seems like the obvious choice if Buffalo decides to release someone, but Matt Cassel's $4.75 million cap charge could earn him the boot. The analogy is not far off. Olson said he has only seen Lee three times in practice since he has been with the Jaguars, and Lee missed a lot of time his rookie year as well. Bills released RB Fred Jackson.

Advice: This one is a shocker. Jackson missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury, but showed he still had juice in his legs in the third preseason game, rushing five times for 48 yards and a touchdown. Releasing Jackson suggests the Bills are confident Karlos Williams (illness) and LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will be ready Week 1. An eight-year veteran, Jackson has been with Buffalo his entire career. Melvin Gordon posted just 34 yards on 16 carries in Saturday’s preseason loss to the Seahawks.

Advice: He also caught two passes for seven yards. Gordon hasn’t found much separation this preseason (22 rushes for 45 yards), but it’s better to go through growing pains now than in September and October. • Winston has uninspiring 3rd preseason game
Jameis Winston completed just 6-of-15 passes for 90 yards and one interception in the Bucs' third preseason game Saturday night.

Advice: It was another ugly night for Winston after he looked impressive in the Bucs' second preseason game last Monday evening. We're not going to overreact, however, as Winston was without No. 1 receiver Mike Evans (hamstring) and playing behind what has the looks of an awful offensive line. Winston's interception was all on him, though; he was under heavy pressure and staggering backward before throwing off his back foot into the middle of the field for an easy pick. • Chargers RBs coach praises Gordon's pass pro
Chargers RBs coach Ollie Wilson said Melvin Gordon's pass-protection concerns are overblown.

I don’t see what people say, that he won’t pass protect. I’ve had no problem with it." Gordon didn't pass protect much in college, and has reportedly been hit-and-miss in that area this summer. • Rivera hints Funchess will replace Benjamin
Panthers coach Ron Rivera hinted the team is planning on rookie WR Devin Funchess replacing Kelvin Benjamin (ACL).

Advice: "The thing we’re waiting for is for Devin to be healthy and get him out on the football field," Rivera said. "He runs a lot of the same type of routes. He’s almost as imposing a target as Kelvin and the biggest thing with him is the confidence that he plays with as he develops." OC Mike Shula said the plan is to replace Benjamin with a committee, but it sounds like Funchess will get most of the snaps in Benjamin's old "X" position. Jameis Winston completed 8-of-13 passes for 90 yards in the Bucs' second preseason game Monday night.

Advice: The Bucs' first-team offense was lightyears better than it was in the preseason opener, but still could only manage seven points on five possessions. The opening drive was absolutely perfect with Doug Martin carrying the offense down the field behind 57 yards on five carries. Winston topped it off with a one-yard touchdown run on a bootleg to the right. He still missed some throws high and was unable to hook up with Mike Evans on two deep shots. Funchess rarely played to his size at Michigan, managing four TDs in his final season. The Panthers are counting on him to play the high-volume X role, but his learning curve remains a concern. Coach Ron Rivera expressed confidence in second-round rookie Devin Funchess as the Panthers' new No. 1 receiver following Kelvin Benjamin's torn ACL.
