  • Mark Sanchez has another nice preseason night
Mark Sanchez completed 7-of-9 passes for 85 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Steelers.

Advice: Sanchez continued to shine with the Eagles' second-team offense, getting rid of the ball quickly and fitting it into tight windows. The Jets' former Sanchize is now 25-of-31 for 281 yards (9.06 YPA), two touchdowns and an interception this preseason. He's looking like he could guide Chip Kelly's offense were Nick Foles to go down with injury. Rotoworld.com

Darrius Heyward-Bey caught 3-of-3 targets for 54 yards and a touchdown in Thursday's preseason game.

Advice: The grabs were DHB's first of the preseason. He ran right by undrafted rookie S Daytawion Lowe for his 33-yard score in the fourth quarter, at least for one brief moment looking like a former first-rounder. It couldn't have hurt his roster odds. Rotoworld.com

  • Lance Moore inactive for preseason game
Lance Moore was inactive for Thursday night's third preseason game with an undisclosed injury.

Advice: ESPN's box score had Moore with one target, but he didn't play. Moore has caught just one ball for six yards in the preseason. Moore has had a quiet camp, to the point he hasn't even warranted a Rotoworld blurb since June. He's tentatively expected to open the season as Pittsburgh's slot receiver, between Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton. But we wouldn't write that in stone. Rotoworld.com

  • Dri Archer goes 3-16 in preseason game
Steelers rookie Dri Archer caught 3-of-4 targets for 14 yards in Thursday night's third preseason game.

Advice: Through three preseason weeks, the third-rounder from Kent State has just ten yards on four carries but 108 yards on seven receptions, including gains of 40 and 46 in Pittsburgh's first two exhibitions. Archer possesses 4.26 speed, but is a package player who can't run between the tackles. His ceiling is essentially a more explosive Dexter McCluster in OC Todd Haley's offense. Rotoworld.com

  • Jordan Matthews catches two passes vs. PITT
Jordan Matthews caught two passes for 16 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Steelers.

Advice: With Jeremy Maclin back in the picture, Matthews was limited to three targets one week after exploding for 9/104 on nine looks. The good news is, he ran in three-wide sets with the first-team offense, and lined up both out of the slot and in the backfield. There's a chance Matthews could get some run in next week's preseason finale, but if not, Philly's slot receiver finishes August with 15 catches for 134 yards. He's an upside WR4/5. Rotoworld.com

  • Maclin shakes off knee scare for 6/43 effort
Jeremy Maclin caught 6-of-8 targets for 43 yards in Thursday's preseason game against the Steelers.

Advice: Maclin moved well after being slowed by knee and hamstring issues in camp, but gave the Eagles the scare of a lifetime when he went down untouched in the first half. His right, surgically-repaired knee appeared to give out, but he walked off the field under his own power before returning to the game a short time later. Maclin's injury history makes him a dicey WR3 proposition in the Eagles' spread-the-wealth passing attack, but his WR2 upside is worth the risk. Rotoworld.com

Advice: Last year, the Bucs used two-tight end sets less than 10 percent of the time, according to Football Outsiders. The Lovie Smith regime has come in and made the position a priority, drafting Austin Seferian-Jenkins 38th overall and signing Brandon Myers. Coach Mike Pettine said there are no plans to develop a package of plays for Johnny Manziel off the bench.

It makes sense, as Johnny Football's running skills are far better suited to improvisation than script. Pettine declined to tip his hand as to when Manziel will make his NFL debut. Johnny Manziel is struggling -- and continues to struggle -- with the Browns' playbook.

Advice: We all got a glimpse of it when Manziel was asked by Jon Gruden in a sit-down interview during Monday night's telecast to spit out a play from OC Kyle Shanahan's playbook. He stumbled over his words before eventually getting it out. It's to be expected from a rookie like Manziel, who is coming from a spread offense with simple, one-, two-, or three-word plays. • Johnny Manziel will open season as backup
Browns first-round QB Johnny Manziel will open the season as a backup to Brian Hoyer.

Advice: Unlike fellow rookie Blake Bortles, Manziel was given a fair shot to win the starting gig. He didn't seize it, showing immaturity on and off the field while averaging just 4.74 yards per attempt in two preseason games. "We're confident that Johnny is going to have a great future, but felt that Brian still had a decided edge on him," coach Mike Pettine said. While it's somewhat disappointing Manziel couldn't beat out a 29-year-old (in October) journeyman coming off an ACL tear, the future will likely come sooner than later. Johnny Manziel was caught on camera giving the Redskins' bench the middle finger during Monday night's preseason game.

Advice: Following a third-quarter incompletion, Manziel flipped the bird and it immediately spread all over Twitter. Manziel said he had "words exchanged" with the Redskins all night, and CB Joe Haden defended his rookie quarterback, saying he took a lot of abuse from Washington's players and fanss Per Redskins FS Ryan Clark, what set off Manziel was Washington players telling him "this isn't college anymore, we're faster than you." Still, Manziel needs to keep his composure. It didn't sit well with coach Mike Pettine, and certainly won't win Manziel any points in the quarterback derby. Johnny Manziel completed 7-of-16 passes for 65 yards and one touchdown in Cleveland's second preseason game against the Redskins on Monday night.

Advice: Brian Hoyer got the start and wasn't any better. He and Manziel both struggled throughout the first half, as they rotated every two series. The two combined to go 4-of-13 for 45 yards in the first half, and each had a QB rating under 45. Manziel played a couple series in the second half against the Redskins' backups, leading a 16-play touchdown drive that was finished off by a Dion Lewis eight-yard catch-and-run score. Per the Philly Inquirer, "Every time (Maclin) has made progress in his return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, he has had to take a step back," and "he didn't look as explosive as he did pre-injury during the first two weeks of camp." Maclin insists it's just part of the routine ACL recovery. We feel like Maclin is worth the plunge at his late-fifth-round ADP, but he's definitely not without risk. Rotoworld.com

  • Jeremy Maclin 'toasting' Revis in 1-on-1 work
Jeremy Maclin has been "toasting" Darrelle Revis during 1-on-1 work at this week's joint practices.

Advice: To be fair, beat man Jeff McLane admits Revis doesn't appear to be going 100 percent. But it's still notable that Maclin is winning this battle, especially considering he's only 12 months removed from an ACL tear. On Tuesday, Maclin drew three flags on Revis and beat him deep for a touchdown. It was more of the same early in Wednesday's session. Clearly healthy, Maclin has WR2 upside as a key piece of Chip Kelly's plan to replace DeSean Jackson. Rotoworld.com

  • Stephen Hill 'all over the map' in camp
Stephen Hill has been "all over the map in camp."

Advice: Hill drew strong early reviews, but his play has apparently deteriorated. Geno Smith admitted Hill has had "some drops," while coach Rex Ryan changed the subject to Hill's blocking when asked about his progress as a pass catcher. Reporter Rich Cimini considers Hill New York's No. 4 receiver behind Eric Decker, Jeremy Kerley and David Nelson. Rotoworld.com

  • Manziel, Hoyer will both work with starters
Coach Mike Pettine said Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer will both work with the starters in Cleveland's second preseason game against the Redskins.

Advice: Manziel will start after Hoyer started the first preseason game. Pettine wants to "balance the reps" out between the two. It's uncertain whether Manziel and Hoyer will each play a quarter in the first half or if they'll simply rotate every other series or two. Pettine and QBs coach Dowell Loggains continue to insist there is no "leader" in the competition. Rotoworld.com

  • Knowshon Moreno returns to team drills
Knowshon Moreno (knee) participated in contact drills Monday for the first time since his scope.

Advice: It was Moreno's first full-padded practice since Super Bowl week. He's reportedly in better shape than he was at OTAs and is having no trouble making sharp cuts. Ideally, the Dolphins will use him as a pass protector and receiving back while Lamar Miller handles the bulk of the early-down carries. Rotoworld.com
