  • Derek Carr torches SEA, puts heat on Schaub
Working as the starter, Derek Carr completed 11-of-13 passes for 143 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in Thursday's preseason finale against the Seahawks.

Advice: Carr stood tall in the pocket, threw darts all over the field and led the Raiders on four straight touchdown drives against the defending Super Bowl champs. In other words, he was the anti-Matt Schaub (elbow, day to day). In three preseason outings, Carr is 30-of-45 (66.6%) for 326 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. To steal a quote from Joe Theismann, if this were a competition, there wouldn't be a competition. The Raiders must realize that Carr, not Schaub, gives them the best chance to win football games. • Bridgewater ends preseason with 5 TDs, 0 INTs
Teddy Bridgewater completed 4-of-9 passes for 17 yards and a touchdown in the Vikings' preseason finale Thursday night.

Advice: The 32nd overall pick in May's draft wraps up the exhibition season 30-of-49 passing for 283 yards and a 5:0 TD-to-INT ratio. His passer rating was 111.2. Matt Cassel remains entrenched as Minnesota's Week 1 starter, and should have a somewhat long leash to open the season. But once he starts stumbling -- and that'll most likely happen at some point -- the calls for Teddy will begin. Rotoworld.com

Eli Manning completed 1-of-4 passes for zero yards in the Giants' preseason finale Thursday night.

Advice: That is, indeed, a real stat line. Eli finishes the preseason 20-of-41 (48.8 percent) passing for 188 yards (4.59 YPA), one touchdown, three fumbles (one lost), and five sacks absorbed. An offseason report from ESPN stated the Giants were concerned Eli had reached his decline phase. He's done nothing to diminish those worries in August. Advice: Clearly worried about their sophomore quarterback, Manuel was allowed to handle three drives in the exhibition finale. He didn't deliver, while losing Sammy Watkins to a rib aggravation. Manuel wraps the preseason 50-of-82 passing (60.2 percent) for 517 yards (6.30 YPA), one touchdown, three turnovers, and six sacks taken. Blake Bortles started Thursday's preseason finale against the Falcons, completing 4-of-6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown.

Advice: Bortles' score was a 57-yard strike to fellow rookie Marqise Lee. Bortles looked ahead of schedule all preseason, and finishes 32-of-51 for 521 yards (10.2 YPA), two touchdowns and zero interceptions. It's looking less and less likely that the Jags will be able to follow through on their plan to "redshirt" Bortles this season. Starter Chad Henne simply isn't good enough. Rotoworld.com

Blake Bortles will start Thursday's preseason finale against the Falcons.

Advice: Bortles handily out-played Chad Henne this preseason, but the Jaguars are still treating him like just any other backup. Considering how shaky the Falcons' first-team defense is, Bortles should put on a show against Atlanta's 2s and 3s, putting even more pressure on Henne. Henne will be under center for Week 1, but it's going to be all but impossible for the Jags to stick to their original plan of redshirting Bortles all season. Rotoworld.com

Matt Schaub (elbow) did some "light tossing" on Wednesday, and will be re-evaluated on Monday.

Advice: Schaub's miraculously-timed "injury" is leaving the door open for second-rounder Derek Carr to start in Week 1. Carr missed the third preseason game with a rib injury, but is getting a Thursday-evening showcase against the Seahawks' reserves. Schaub has played poorly enough this August that it can't be assumed the Raiders will stand by him if they're convinced by what they see from Carr on Thursday. Rotoworld.com

Smith certainly looked more assertive on the preseason field, completing 23-of-33 passes for 268 yards (8.12 YPA), one touchdown and one interception. He dropped dimes into tight coverage. The Oakland Tribune suggests rookie Derek Carr could "shorten the leash" of struggling starter Matt Schaub by playing well in the Raiders' preseason finale.

Advice: Carr will play well into the second half of Thursday's tilt with Seattle. "I've said it from Day 1, the guy's comfortable in the huddle," OC Greg Olson said of Carr. "The game's not too big for him. I still believe he sees the field very well. I don't think the game's too fast for him, which a lot of times is a concern with a rookie quarterback." In five NFL seasons, he's appeared in more than 10 games just twice. Bradford is due $12.985 million next season, but is highly unlikely to be back in St. Louis at that number. Advice: If this were actually true, Allen would deserve to be fired on the spot. Instead, it's just a matter of a coach already committed to vanilla "quotes" trying to keep his quarterback's shattered confidence up. Advice: "Some" of the Bills' first-team offense will suit up on Thursday. It's unusual for a starting quarterback to play in the finale, especially since Manuel and the Bills had an extra contest in the Hall-of-Fame Game. It's a sign that the Bills are (rightfully) concerned with Manuel's play this summer. Manuel has completed 47-of-75 passes for 461 yards (6.14 YPA), one touchdown and two picks. The Raiders have given themselves an out, however, discovering a "minor" elbow "injury." • Rams lose Sam Bradford to re-torn left ACL
Sam Bradford is done for the season after re-tearing his left ACL in Saturday night's preseason game against the Browns.

Advice: Bradford's to-date career performance suggests this isn't quite the crippling blow to St. Louis' offense it may be perceived as, but it certainly hurts. Bradford will enter 2015 having missed 31 of 80 possible games in his career, and coming off back-to-back left ACL tears with a roughly $13 million base salary. The Rams will turn to longtime NFL backup Shaun Hill, whose 6.7 career YPA and 61.9 completion rate are both superior to Bradford's marks, but who hasn't made a start since 2010. Keep in mind Bradford is still only 26 years old; he turns 27 in November. If the Rams are forced to cut him next offseason -- they currently have the least salary cap space in football -- he'd be a worthwhile flier for a quarterback-needy team. This year, the Rams are going to pound the ball with Zac Stacy and to a lesser extent Benny Cunningham. Rotoworld.com

  • Manuel struggles in final preseason tune-up
E.J. Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards with one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Bucs.

Advice: The interception wasn't Manuel's fault; Scott Chandler fell down on his route and allowed Dashon Goldson to get an easy pick. But Manuel had a couple of other near-interceptions that he forced into coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that was returned for a touchdown. Manuel's propensity to check down in the preseason has been the bigger concern. Buffalo's offense generated only 82 yards in the first half. Manuel's stat line would have looked a lot worse, but he was able to light up the Bucs' second-stringers in the third quarter. It's worth noting that Manuel was playing without Sammy Watkins. The Bills offensive line was also a major issue, allowing five sacks. In four preseason starts, Manuel has completed 47-of-75 passes (63 percent) for 461 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. He's not on the QB2 radar. Rotoworld.com

Eli Manning completed 12-of-21 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason game against the Jets, also fumbling twice.

Advice: The G-Men recovered both fumbles. Manning almost tossed several picks, one of which was a horrid number thrown into double coverage from short distance for absolutely no reason. Thankfully for the Giants, Jets CB Kyle Wilson couldn't keep both feet in bounds. As was the case in 2013, Manning had very little time to throw. If there was good news, it was his connection with Rueben Randle, whom he found for a touchdown and an impressive 26-yard play down the sideline. • Derek Carr active for third preseason game
Derek Carr (ribs) is active for Friday night's preseason game against the Packers.

Advice: The Raiders didn't list Carr among their inactives, but it doesn't necessarily mean that he's going to play. Carr is expected to sit out after suffering a concussion and bruised ribs in the Raiders' second preseason game. Marcel Reece (foot) is also listed as active. Rotoworld.com

  • Derek Carr sitting out third preseason game
Derek Carr (ribs) will sit out Friday's preseason game against the Packers.

Advice: It's a major missed opportunity for the second-round signal caller, who could have put heat on struggling starter Matt Schaub with a strong performance. Schaub is now all but guaranteed to be under center come Week 1. Carr will probably still make starts sooner rather than later. Rotoworld.com

  • Geno Smith has starting job locked up
ESPN New York confirms Geno Smith will be the Jets' Week 1 starter.

Advice: The Jets haven't made an official announcement yet, but it's only a matter of time. Geno has soaked up the vast majority of first-team reps in practice, started the first two preseason games and will start on Friday night. "When the coaches say, 'First-group offense,' we know who's walking in the huddle," WR David Nelson said Tuesday. "It's not something that needs to be said. He's the guy and we're moving forward." • Blake Bortles gets 7 or 8 first-team reps
Blake Bortles received 7-8 first-team snaps during Tuesday's practice.

Advice: That was up from the three first-team reps Bortles took on Monday. The Jags are slowly bringing the No. 3 overall pick along while quietly avoiding the quarterback competition that went down in Cleveland. Through two preseason games, Bortles is 18-of-28 for 277 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, good for a 96.9 passer rating. We'd be a little surprised if he's not starting games for the Jags by Halloween. Rotoworld.com
