  • Texans sign J.J. Watt to long-term extension
The Houston Chronicle reports the Texans have "agreed in principle" on a long-term extension with LE J.J. Watt.

Advice: Financial details should be leaked in the morning, but the sides have been working on this deal "for several weeks." There's a good chance it will make Watt the highest paid defender in league history. Watt spoke publicly about his desire for a long-term commitment from the Texans in mid-August, which may have sparked discussions. Watt, 25, has 36.5 sacks and eight forced fumbles across his first three NFL seasons to go with an incredible 27 pass breakups, earning him the nickname "J.J. Swatt." Pro Football has graded Watt as its No. 1 overall 3-4 defensive end in back-to-back years. Rotoworld.com

Brandon McManus will be the Broncos' kicker during Matt Prater's four-game suspension.

Advice: GM John Elway expressed confidence in McManus after he missed 2-of-4 field goals in the Broncos' preseason finale. He was acquired from the Giants for a seventh-rounder. With McManus kicking for Denver's high-octane offense, he's at or near the top of the fantasy kicking group. McManus has a booming leg. Rotoworld.com

Jaguars UDFA Allen Hurns is expected to open the season as the team's No. 3 receiver, behind Cecil Shorts and Marqise Lee.

Advice: Shorts is the X and Lee the Z receiver in two-wide sets. In the three-wides, we suspect Lee will move inside to the slot, with Shorts and Hurns on the outside. Hurns beat out Mike Brown for the No. 3 role, although he will soon be pushed by recovering second-rounder Allen Robinson (hamstring). Despite Hurns' big August, Robinson is by far the superior stash in Dynasty leagues. Rotoworld.com

  • Paper believes Miller now behind Moreno
The Miami Herald believes it's "clear" Lamar Miller has fallen behind Knowshon Moreno for lead-back duties.

Advice: Reporter Armando Salguero - whose gut is usually right - came to the conclusion after listening to OC Bill Lazor's Monday presser. "(I) feel very good about (Miller's) ability to be productive," Lazor said. "But if you're talking about the preseason games, his production needs to improve." Lazor also hinted he wants Miller to be more "decisive." We're unlikely to get a true idea of how the Dolphins' backfield will shake out before Sunday's opener against the Patriots, but it's obvious a committee is in order. It's just a matter of who is the lead dog. Rotoworld.com

The new Bucs coaching staff has reportedly changed their opinion on Doug Martin as a pass-catcher.

Advice: The Lovie Smith regime came to Tampa thinking they needed to find a passing back, which led to the selection of Charles Sims at No. 69 overall. But that opinion "changed in a big way after Martin used training camp and the preseason to show his versatility." Now Sims (ankle) is out until at least Week 10, Martin is shaping up as a three-down back and the Bucs have added a nasty run-blocker in Logan Mankins. The Muscle Hamster's arrow is pointing up. Advice: Oftentimes, players with a history of concussions have trouble progressing quickly through the league's protocols. That doesn't appear to be the case with Welker even though this is his third concussion in the last nine months. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport says there's a "lot of optimism from the team," essentially confirming that Welker has no intention of retiring and is on track to make a speedy return. Advice: "Some" of the Bills' first-team offense will suit up on Thursday. It's unusual for a starting quarterback to play in the finale, especially since Manuel and the Bills had an extra contest in the Hall-of-Fame Game. It's a sign that the Bills are (rightfully) concerned with Manuel's play this summer. Manuel has completed 47-of-75 passes for 461 yards (6.14 YPA), one touchdown and two picks. Advice: Klis notes that Week 1 is still two weeks away, and Welker's special "concussion" helmet "helped absorb" the blow he took from Texans S D.J. Swearinger. We saw Sanders begin to go in the fifth, fourth, and even third rounds of fantasy drafts Sunday as folks presumably assumed Welker wouldn't play this year. • Wes Welker diagnosed with another concussion
Coach John Fox confirmed Wes Welker suffered a concussion in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans.

Advice: Welker's latest head trauma came when trash-talking Texans S D.J. Swearinger hit him up high just before halftime. The 33-year-old slot machine also suffered two concussions last season, with the second one costing him the final three regular-season games. He also had a number of head injuries while with the Patriots, putting his long-term status in some doubt. At this point, he has to think about his health after football. If Welker misses regular season time, Emmanuel Sanders would move into the slot and Andre Caldwell would compete with rookie Cody Latimer for the starting role outside. • Manuel struggles in final preseason tune-up
E.J. Manuel completed 19-of-28 passes for 198 yards with one touchdown and an interception in Saturday's preseason game against the Bucs.

Advice: The interception wasn't Manuel's fault; Scott Chandler fell down on his route and allowed Dashon Goldson to get an easy pick. But Manuel had a couple of other near-interceptions that he forced into coverage. He also lost a fumble on a sack that was returned for a touchdown. Manuel's propensity to check down in the preseason has been the bigger concern. Buffalo's offense generated only 82 yards in the first half. Manuel's stat line would have looked a lot worse, but he was able to light up the Bucs' second-stringers in the third quarter. It's worth noting that Manuel was playing without Sammy Watkins. The Bills offensive line was also a major issue, allowing five sacks. In four preseason starts, Manuel has completed 47-of-75 passes (63 percent) for 461 yards, with one touchdown and two interceptions. He's not on the QB2 radar. Rotoworld.com

He played in OC Jedd Fisch's system at Miami and has shown good chemistry with Chad Henne and Blake Bortles. Hurns' touchdown came against second-stringers on an 11-yard pass from Bortles in the third quarter. He's now up to 13 receptions for 230 yards and a touchdown through three preseason games.
