  • Bills confirm Taylor as starting quarterback
The Bills have confirmed Tyrod Taylor will be their starting quarterback.

Advice: "It all comes down to the explosiveness Tyrod brings to us," were the words of coach Rex Ryan. Taylor is certainly explosive, but has lacked passing finesse going back to his days at Virginia Tech. He'll be someone the Bills try to hide, hoping for rushing yards and big plays. Taylor's legs put him on the QB2 radar, and leave him as an intriguing early-season possibility in daily leagues. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 12:22 pm

  • Jimmy Clausen dealing with concussion
Bears No. 2 QB Jimmy Clausen has a concussion.

Advice: Clausen should be ready for Week 1, but it means he'll miss valuable reps in Thursday's preseason finale. It's also a concern after Clausen was concussed on a vicious hit late last season. Clausen is one of the league's poorer backups, but he could end up making starts if Jay Cutler's career continues its downward trajectory. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:31 am

  • RGIII era officially over in Washington D.C.
Robert Griffin III has been benched.

Advice: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Lives. Beset by never-ending drama and an inability to stay at 100 percent, RGIII has met his predictable end for the league's most dysfunctional franchise. It's possible he won't even be the first man off the bench, with vanilla coach Jay Gruden preferring Colt McCoy's pop-gun skill-set to RGIII's unrefined dual-threat aesthetic. Much of Griffin's issues are his own doing, but he's received zero help from a franchise that's offered bafflingly little support since making him a centerpiece three years ago. A trade or release is best for all parties involved, and the sooner, the better. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:00 am

  • Gruden names Kirk Cousins starter for 2015
Redskins coach Jay Gruden named Kirk Cousins the team's starting quarterback.

Advice: Gruden said Cousins "is the best quarterback on our roster" and will be the starter for all of 2015. That may be the intention today, but nothing in the Redskins' recent history suggests they will slide through the entire season with one quarterback. Cousins owns a 59-percent career completion rate and has thrown 19 interceptions to 18 touchdowns in his three-year career. Robert Griffin III and even Colt McCoy could still make starts this season. Bucs OC Dirk Koetter confirmed Jameis Winston is dealing with a sprained ankle.

Advice: Koetter said the ankle is affecting his play, but he does not expect it to be a problem in the regular season. Winston suffered the injury in the second preseason game. He played well in that contest, but he struggled in the third exhibition game. Injured or not, up and down performances are what fantasy owners should expect from the rookie signal caller. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport expects the Bills to cut a quarterback after naming Tyrod Taylor their starter.

Advice: Coach Rex Ryan has said the team would probably keep three quarterbacks, but he has been anything but forthcoming about his quarterbacks during the last month. E.J. Manuel seems like the obvious choice if Buffalo decides to release someone, but Matt Cassel's $4.75 million cap charge could earn him the boot. Fox Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Bills have decided Tyrod Taylor will be their starting quarterback.

Advice: ESPN's Adam Schefter hinted at this possibility earlier Monday. Taylor only attempted 35 regular season passes as Joe Flacco's backup in Baltimore for four seasons, but he offers the Bills a rushing dimension veteran Matt Cassel cannot match. Browns coach Mike Pettine said the fourth preseason game is not "make or break" for WR Terrelle Pryor (hamstring).

Advice: Pryor has missed the entire preseason slate after going down with a hamstring injury early in camp, and Pettine said last week the window was closing on him making the team. Pettine appears to have softened that stance, perhaps because Pryor represents the most athletic upside in the Browns' nondescript receiving corps. Despite the lack of trade talk, La Canfora called Griffin's future with the organization "murky at best." A source told The Washington Post the report was "100 percent wrong." Even if Washington wanted to move Griffin, they would struggle to find any takers. Despite the missed offseason, Romo posted the most efficient season of his career in 2014, averaging 8.5 yards per attempt and throwing a touchdown on 7.8 percent of his throws. • Derek Carr's night sullied by pick six
Derek Carr completed 18-of-34 passes for 213 yards and an interception in the Raiders' third preseason game.

Advice: He engineered nine drives in two-plus quarters, resulting in five Sebastian Janikowski field goals. Carr's biggest play in the first half came on a deep wheel route to FB Marcel Reece, gaining 42 yards down the sideline. On third-and-long later in the second quarter, Carr made a strong throw to Amari Cooper down the right sideline, exposing Patrick Peterson for a 36-yard hookup. An otherwise mediocre night was sullied when Carr got pick-sixed by Cardinals UDFA corner Cariel Brooks on Oakland's opening drive of the second half. That was Carr's final throw of Sunday's game. Carson Palmer completed 8-of-22 passes for 103 yards and two interceptions in the Cardinals' third preseason game.

Advice: Bruce Arians let the ones play longer than expected because the offense struggled so much. Palmer was intercepted on Arizona's first drive, getting picked on an errant wide throw by Raiders FS Nate Allen along the sideline. The rest of the first half, Arizona's offensive line was bullied by Khalil Mack & Co., leaving Palmer without clean passing-game looks and forcing him into inaccurate throws. Palmer was picked again by Allen toward the end of the second quarter. Through three preseason contests, Palmer is 15-of-33 passing for 268 yards, one touchdown, and the two picks. PFT's Mike Florio contends that "this simply isn't true," and "everyone is on the same page." Florio insists Snyder is not hindering the Redskins' football operations. • Mallett up and down in 3rd preseason game
Ryan Mallett completed 9-of-17 passes for 77 yards and a touchdown in the Texans' third preseason game.

Advice: Brian Hoyer played just about a quarter, giving Mallett lots of run in the first half and into the third quarter. The offense largely sputtered after Hoyer left, but Mallett did throw a rocket for a would-be 15-yard touchdown to TE Ryan Griffin, only for Griffin to bobble the ball on the way down and have the score negated. Mallett finally got the offense moving on a third-quarter drive against the Saints' reserve defense, hitting Jaelen Strong for a six-yard score. Hoyer led a touchdown drive on Houston's opening possession, hitting Hopkins and Cecil Shorts for the big gains before Alfred Blue dove in from a yard out to cap it. Amid concerns about a ball-control offense, the Saints are continuing to spread the field with three wide receivers on the majority of plays. Advice: It was another ugly night for Winston after he looked impressive in the Bucs' second preseason game last Monday evening. We're not going to overreact, however, as Winston was without No. 1 receiver Mike Evans (hamstring) and playing behind what has the looks of an awful offensive line. Winston's interception was all on him, though; he was under heavy pressure and staggering backward before throwing off his back foot into the middle of the field for an easy pick. His interception came on a screen pass when he forced the ball into a crowd, and he fumbled a snap on the first play of the next drive. He struggled with ball placement all night, and his touchdown came on a tipped ball which should have been intercepted. Advice: Pryor has resumed practicing, but his conditioning isn't up to speed. With the Browns' starters unlikely to see much, if any, action in next week's exhibition finale, it means Pryor will end the summer with no meaningful snaps as he makes the transition from quarterback. Pryor has the high-end athleticism the Browns lack basically everywhere else on offense, but he could be too raw for a spot on the 53-man roster. Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will start the third preseason game.

  • Mariota plays 1st half of 3rd preseason game
Marcus Mariota completed 7-of-11 passes for 99 yards and rushed three times for 22 yards in the Titans' third preseason game.

Advice: Mariota was a strict pocket quarterback in Tennessee's first two preseason games. He took a read-option play on the Titans' second drive in this one and gained 12 yards on the keeper. Mariota wasn't quite as sharp as he has been against the Chiefs -- he missed Delanie Walker for a potential big play on an underthrow -- but it's been quite an impressive exhibition season for the No. 2 overall pick. Mariota offers upside as a late-QB2 fantasy pick. Rotoworld.com Friday, 6:43 pm

  • Tom Brady throws 2 INTs in preseason game
Tom Brady completed 7-of-13 passes for 84 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the Patriots' third preseason game.

Advice: Starting the game and playing 27 snaps, Brady got sacked to end New England's first possession and gained nine years apiece on a pair of scrambles, taking another blow at the end of the second. The first of Brady's interceptions was really a lost fumble by Aaron Dobson, which Peanut Tillman wrestled away. Brady rallied back to hit Scott Chandler for an 18-yard touchdown on a fade pass. He was replaced by Jimmy Garoppolo on the Patriots' first second-half drive. Rotoworld.com Friday, 6:33 pm

Robert Griffin III (concussion) will not be cleared for Saturday's preseason game.

Advice: Griffin hasn't been cleared by an independent doctor and remains in the concussion protocol. The Redskins originally expected him to play, but will hold him out at least one more week. Ryan Mallett returned to Texans practice Friday after oversleeping on Thursday, and was the third quarterback through practice drills.

Advice: Coach Bill O'Brien did insist after the session that Mallett remains second on the depth chart behind Brian Hoyer. "The situation with Ryan not being at practice that's between Ryan and I," O'Brien said. "Some things are left within the team." Mallett should open the season carrying the clipboard for Hoyer. • Terrelle Pryor 'on course' to play Saturday
Terrelle Pryor (hamstring) is "on course" to play in the Browns' third preseason game Saturday barring a setback on Friday.

Advice: Pryor needs it. After missing the majority of the month with a hamstring injury, Pryor sounded "dejected" at practice this week with the injury taking its toll on him. Pryor just needs to get on the field Saturday and show something -- anything, really -- to earn a 53-man roster spot. We can't see the rebuilding Browns cutting the only physically-gifted, big receiver on the team. Rotoworld.com Friday, 7:12 am

  • Ryan Mallett overslept Thursday's practice
Ryan Mallett missed Thursday's practice because he overslept.

Advice: It's hard to fathom for a 27-year-old man who was in pursuit of the Texans' starting job as recently as three days ago. The Texans gave Mallett a chance to make something of his career after three years in the Patriots backup wilderness, and he's responded in remarkably limp fashion. The Browns have a strong case, as well, but you could argue Houston has the worst quarterback situation in the NFL. Rotoworld.com Thursday, 4:53 pm

  • RGIII plays coy on concussion status
Robert Griffin III won't say if he suffered a concussion in last Thursday's preseason game.

Advice: The scuttlebutt has been that Washington made up RGIII's concussion so he could avoid talking to the media following a disastrous performance. "You’ve got to talk to the people who report that stuff," Griffin said. "I don’t report that stuff. I was in the locker room, taking a shower, getting ready to watch the rest of the game, so I don’t know." Even by Washington's standards, this is a ridiculous melodrama. • Terrelle Pryor unsure of Saturday status
Terrelle Pryor (hamstring) is unsure if he'll be available for Saturday's preseason game.

Advice: Pryor said it depends on how he feels Friday. Already sidelined for Cleveland's first two preseason games, Pryor's roster odds could take a critical blow if he isn't ready for the regular season dress rehearsal. Of course, the Browns find themselves so short of premium athletes on offense that they may be willing to roll the dice on Pryor regardless of what he does the rest of the summer. • Bills may rotate QBs in third preseason game
The Bills could use all three of their quarterbacks with the first-team offense in Saturday’s preseason game.

Advice: "I’m not going to tip my hand, but you are very intelligent," Rex Ryan said when asked if Buffalo would rotate quarterbacks. Most teams use the third preseason game as a regular season dress rehearsal, with the starters playing into the second half. The Bills using it as a deciding factor for their starting quarterback would be a concern from a chemistry standpoint. Buffalo’s offense has rarely played together this preseason, with LeSean McCoy, Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, and Percy Harvin all dealing with injuries. Tyrod Taylor is the favorite to start Week 1, but the Bills have been giving first-team practice reps to all three quarterbacks. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 2:39 pm

Terrelle Pryor (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday.

Advice: Pryor had to get back to practice this week if he's going to make the roster. He initially injured his hamstring the first week of August, returned August 15, but re-tweaked it on the 18th, and had been out until today. Advice: RGIII will start Saturday's game against the Ravens after suffering a concussion last week. Kirk Cousins will be the first man off the bench, suggesting he has a leg up on Colt McCoy for No. 2 duties. Although Griffin has never looked like a fit for Gruden's offense, he's still the only one of Washington's quarterbacks with anything resembling upside. Andy Dalton completed 6-of-13 passes for 46 yards, zero touchdowns, and two interceptions in the Bengals' second preseason game.

Advice: Cincinnati's Dalton-led offense managed 49 total yards and three points while playing the entire first half. The Bengals were playing with a shorter deck up front without RT Andre Smith, but it was a bad night all around. Dalton's first interception clanked off A.J. Green's hands and popped in the air for an easy pick-six by Alterraun Verner, but the second pick was all on Dalton. • Winston much better in second preseason game
Jameis Winston completed 8-of-13 passes for 90 yards in the Bucs' second preseason game Monday night.

Advice: The Bucs' first-team offense was lightyears better than it was in the preseason opener, but still could only manage seven points on five possessions. The opening drive was absolutely perfect with Doug Martin carrying the offense down the field behind 57 yards on five carries. Winston topped it off with a one-yard touchdown run on a bootleg to the right. He still missed some throws high and was unable to hook up with Mike Evans on two deep shots. The offensive line also gave up too much pressure and ultimately forced Winston out of the game early in the second quarter after he appeared to hurt his ankle on a sack. Texans coach Bill O'Brien confirms Brian Hoyer will be the team's starting quarterback, but adds he'll be on a short leash.

Advice: Hoyer has won the job after Ryan Mallett failed to take it. Neither player has impressed this preseason, but Hoyer's experience was always going to give him the edge over a player who has attempted just 79 regular season passes. We buy O'Brien's word that Hoyer is on a short leash. He was arguably the worst quarterback in the NFL last season. Mallett should make starts. Advice: Reporter Tony Grossi believes Pryor "has" to practice this week and play in Saturday's regular season dress rehearsal to have a realistic shot at making the team. Coach Mike Pettine has basically said the same. Pryor was looking like a lock in early August, but at this point, his odds are probably worse than 50-50. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Texans have named Brian Hoyer as their starting quarterback.

Advice: Coach Bill O'Brien declined to name a starter on Sunday, saying he did not have a timetable for a decision. As it turns out, NFL coaches lie. Hoyer has completed 9-of-15 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown this preseason, though most of that yardage came on one big play to Cecil Shorts in the opening game. His play has been shaky, but Ryan Mallett did nothing to apply pressure in the battle. • Mariota solid in brief appearance
Marcus Mariota completed 5-of-8 passes for 59 yards and rushed once for a one-yard gain in the Titans' second preseason game.

Advice: Although he generated only one splash play in limited work -- a 35-yard connection to TE Craig Stevens -- Mariota looked cool and composed before giving way to Zach Mettenberger. Mariota should've had a first-half touchdown pass, but it was dropped by third-down back Dexter McCluster. The No. 2 overall draft pick is now 12-of-16 passing for 153 yards, one touchdown, and one pick through two preseason affairs. Houston Chronicle beat writer Jerome Solomon called the Texans' quarterback race a "dead heat" between Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett.

Advice: Solomon put an emphasis on the word "dead." Neither one is a strong choice to lead the offense. Hoyer completed 7-of-11 passes for 52 yards Saturday while Mallett was an underwhelming 5-of-7 for 23 yards. Advice: The highlights included a 57-yard rocket to J.J. Nelson and a good find on a 17-yard touchdown throw to John Brown. Palmer took a couple sacks and misfired on a few throws but the Cards have to be impressed by his performance less than a year removed from ACL surgery. Ryan has already said he plans to wait until the last minute to name a starting quarterback, so it is not surprising he has declined to name a starter for the rehearsal.
