  • Matt Schaub benched in Oakland
    Matt Schaub has been benched.

Advice: This was an easy prediction a half-year ago. Schaub went Full-Delhomme over his final 16 games with Houston, posting a 13:19 TD-to-INT ratio with a mind-blowing five pick-sixes. Apparently, the only people on the planet who didn't realize he was finished work in the Raiders' front office -- which also traded for Matt Flynn last offseason. Oakland will move forward with second-round pick Derek Carr as its starter. All of Schaub's $8 million base salary for 2014 is guaranteed, so he remains a roster lock. Rotoworld.com

  • Glazer: Raiders will start Derek Carr Week 1
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer reports the Raiders will start Derek Carr in Week 1 against the Jets, and have sent Matt Schaub to the bench.

Advice: The coaches informed the players on Monday. It's the right call after Schaub had a dumpster fire of a preseason, and Carr sizzled with a 105.2 passer rating on 45 throws. With Schaub nursing a sore elbow in the preseason finale, Carr carved up the Seahawks for 143 yards and three scores on 13 passes. The current regime in Oakland needs to win football games now, and Carr gives the Raiders their best chance at that. It's a tough first test for Carr on the road against a ferocious defensive line. But he should find windows to throw into against what is arguably the worst cornerback group in the league. Rotoworld.com

  • Paper believes Miller now behind Moreno
The Miami Herald believes it's "clear" Lamar Miller has fallen behind Knowshon Moreno for lead-back duties.

Advice: Reporter Armando Salguero - whose gut is usually right - came to the conclusion after listening to OC Bill Lazor's Monday presser. "(I) feel very good about (Miller's) ability to be productive," Lazor said. "But if you're talking about the preseason games, his production needs to improve." Lazor also hinted he wants Miller to be more "decisive." We're unlikely to get a true idea of how the Dolphins' backfield will shake out before Sunday's opener against the Patriots, but it's obvious a committee is in order. Carr lit up the Seahawks' 2s and 3s in Thursday night's preseason finale, and has run circles around Schaub all preseason. We expect Carr to get the call against the Jets next weekend. The Bills visit the Bears on Sunday, September 7 to start the season. Expect Watkins to play outside at "X" receiver, with Mike Williams at "Z." The San Francisco Chronicle's Vic Tafur believes there's a 100 percent chance Derek Carr is the Raiders' starting quarterback Week 1 against the Jets.

Advice: All signs have been pointing to this since Carr torched the Seahawks in last night's preseason finale. Coach Dennis Allen, who had previously been adamant that Matt Schaub would start the opener, became more wishy-washy with his comments Thursday night. It's led beat writers to believe Carr is going to get the nod two Sundays from now in the Meadowlands. Schaub's arm is shot, while Carr's is cocked and loaded with big-time talent. Advice: Carr stood tall in the pocket, threw darts all over the field and led the Raiders on four straight touchdown drives against the defending Super Bowl champs. In other words, he was the anti-Matt Schaub (elbow, day to day). In three preseason outings, Carr is 30-of-45 (66.6%) for 326 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Watkins has been lighting up practice all summer, but has just three catches for 21 yards through three preseason games. He's a boom-or-bust fantasy prospect with bumbling E.J. Manuel under center for the Bills. Rotoworld.com

  • Raiders still committed to Schaub for Week 1
NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Raiders remain committed to Matt Schaub as their Week 1 starter.

Advice: No one but the Raiders expected Schaub to look good this preseason, but he's been ever worse than feared, completing just 24-of-47 passes for 218 yards (4.63 YPA), zero touchdowns and one pick through three games. The Raiders have given themselves an out, however, discovering a "minor" elbow "injury." Second-rounder Derek Carr may have seized the starting job had he not missed last weekend's dress rehearsal with a rib ailment. Schaub is on borrowed time under center. He's un-draftable in two-quarterback leagues. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: OAK staff feels comfortable with Carr
According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, the Raiders' staff feels Derek Carr is ready to start if needed.

Advice: Everyone in the NFL world knew Matt Schaub was done except for the Raiders. Now he's dealing with tendinitis in his throwing elbow and is looking no better than he did when he got benched in favor of Case Keenum last year. If Carr can show well in the preseason finale Thursday, there will be serious pressure on Dennis Allen to start the rookie as soon as Week 1. Either way, Carr is a near lock to make some starts this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Matt Schaub diagnosed with tendinitis
Matt Schaub has been diagnosed with mere tendinitis in his throwing elbow.

Advice: It's a non-structural issue that can often be healed with rest. The Raiders should be praying that this is the only reason Schaub's arm strength has looked so poor this preseason -- he didn't look any better last year before getting benched in favor of Case Keenum in Houston. Schaub will likely be under center Week 1, but we'd bet on Derek Carr giving the Raiders a better chance to win this season. Rotoworld.com

  • Wes Welker likely to play in Week 1?
The Denver Post's Mike Klis believes Wes Welker (concussion) will play in Week 1 against the Colts.

Advice: Klis notes that Week 1 is still two weeks away, and Welker's special "concussion" helmet "helped absorb" the blow he took from Texans S D.J. Swearinger. We saw Sanders begin to go in the fifth, fourth, and even third rounds of fantasy drafts Sunday as folks presumably assumed Welker wouldn't play this year. Longtime Broncos beat writer Klis disagrees. Welker remains a player to shy away from in the early rounds of drafts, but could actually turn out to be a pretty nice value if he emerges from this latest scare with a clear head. Rotoworld.com

  • Derek Carr is fully healthy
Rookie Derek Carr was the Raiders' first-team quarterback at Sunday's practice, and will play in Thursday's preseason finale against Seattle.

Advice: Matt Schaub is nursing a "sore elbow," so Carr is running with the ones. Carr has recovered fully from his concussion and rib injury, which were suffered in the Raiders' second preseason game. If Carr plays well against the Seahawks, we would not entirely rule out the possibility he starts Week 1 against the Jets. Rotoworld.com

Matt Schaub is now battling a "sore elbow" at Raiders camp.

Advice: An arm injury doesn't explain Schaub's inability to move or make sound decisions, but could be telling in regards to his noticeable shortage of arm strength. Schaub has looked genuinely Matt Flynnian in preseason games. Perhaps the sore elbow will be the excuse Dennis Allen needs to put Schaub out of his misery. He's been outplayed by rookie Derek Carr throughout August. Rotoworld.com

  • Newton playing will come down to pain mgmt.
The Panthers don't expect to know Cam Newton's (rib) Week 1 availability until next week.

Advice: Newton has a hairline rib fracture in his back region. "We'll treat him day by day and evaluate him at the end of the week and see how he is," Rivera said. "We expect him to get past the soreness in the next few days and then be able to do a lot more as the days go." Newton's ability to play will come down to "pain management." We suspect he'll be out there Week 1 at Tampa, but perhaps with fewer designed runs in the playbook. Rotoworld.com

  • Cam Newton has hairline fracture in his ribs
Cam Newton has been diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his ribs, but the Panthers are optimistic he will play in Week 1.

Advice: Coach Ron Rivera said Sunday he "thinks" Newton will play Week 1 at Tampa Bay. The September 7 opener is exactly two weeks away. Newton will obviously be held out of Carolina's preseason finale. Newton's rib and ankle injuries are an increasing concern for his mobility and rushing potential, as OC Mike Shula may scale back designed runs in an effort to keep his quarterback healthy. Those worries are still baked into Newton's mid- to late-seventh-round ADP, where he is a value pick. This latest news will probably push him into the eighth round of 12-team drafts. Rotoworld.com

  • Wes Welker diagnosed with another concussion
Coach John Fox confirmed Wes Welker suffered a concussion in Saturday's preseason game against the Texans.

Advice: Welker's latest head trauma came when trash-talking Texans S D.J. Swearinger hit him up high just before halftime. The 33-year-old slot machine also suffered two concussions last season, with the second one costing him the final three regular-season games. He also had a number of head injuries while with the Patriots, putting his long-term status in some doubt. At this point, he has to think about his health after football. If Welker misses regular season time, Emmanuel Sanders would move into the slot and Andre Caldwell would compete with rookie Cody Latimer for the starting role outside. Note that Caldwell ran ahead of Latimer Saturday night. Rotoworld.com

  • Colston catches 13-yard TD versus Colts
Marques Colston caught 2-of-4 targets for 25 yards and a touchdown in the Saints' third preseason game, Saturday at Indianapolis.

Advice: Colston drew several first-half penalties before making his most notable play on a 13-yard touchdown catch down the middle, beating Colts ILB D'Qwell Jackson. Colston's demise has been greatly exaggerated following a slow start to the 2013 season. He tore up the second half and playoffs, and is an ideal value-pick WR2/3 at his seventh-round Average Draft Position. Rotoworld.com

Wes Welker took a shot to the head from Texans S D.J. Swearinger late in the first half of Saturday's preseason game.

Advice: The trash-talking Swearinger lowered his shoulder and connected with Welker's head after a catch over the middle. The play drew a 15-yard penalty. Welker was able to pop right up, but trainers immediately escorted him to the locker room for concussion tests. Of course, Welker has a long history of concussions and another one would almost certainly result in a multi-week absence. It's a scary situation for the Broncos. Rotoworld.com

Lamar Miller started the Dolphins' third preseason game, rushing for 34 yards on seven carries and catching two passes for three yards.

Advice: Despite the start, Miller rotated fairly evenly with Knowshon Moreno throughout the first half. Moreno ran well on Saturday night, but Miller put in a good showing as well. Miller may lose some work to Moreno, but he will remain an important part of the Dolphins' offense. Miller has 76 total yards on 20 preseason touches. Rotoworld.com

ESPN 980 Washington's Chris Russell believes sixth-round pick Lache Seastrunk has been outplayed by UDFA Silas Redd in training camp.

Advice: Seastrunk has made some explosive plays against deep reserves in preseason games, but has poor hands and is still unable to pass block. Seastrunk is more talented than Redd, but Redd is a more complete back. Perhaps the Redskins will try to stash Seastrunk on their practice squad. He isn't ready to play. Rotoworld.com

  • C-Mike has nice night against the Bears
Christine Michael rushed eight times for 28 yards and caught 3-of-3 targets for 36 yards and a touchdown in the Seahawks' third preseason game.

Advice: He was the third Seahawks back to enter, behind Marshawn Lynch and Robert Turbin. Michael and Turbin both got first-team run after Lynch departed, however, with C-Mike handling deep red-zone carries toward the end of Seattle's second drive. Perhaps most promisingly, Michael executed on a first-quarter blitz pickup of Lance Briggs. There are no questions about Michael's running ability, but he still needs to polish the finer points of his game. He fumbled in each of the Seahawks' first two preseason affairs, but displayed ball security on Friday night and was very active in the passing game, which has historically been a weakness for C-Mike. He's a high-upside Dynasty stash, albeit with injury-dependent re-draft value. Rotoworld.com

Andre Williams rushed 11 times for 49 yards and a touchdown in Friday's regular-season dress rehearsal.

Advice: It's a nice stat line, but less impressive when you realize Williams got out-touched 14-1 by Rashad Jennings in the first half. Neither player got a goal-line look while Eli Manning was still in the game. Williams' score came with 6:12 remaining. He's now up to 33 carries for 151 yards (4.57 YPC) and two touchdowns through four preseason games. Williams should get some looks near the goal line, but opens the season as nothing more than an RB4 in re-draft leagues. Rotoworld.com

Advice: It could have been a much bigger night. Olsen was wide open with room to run down the seam early in the first quarter, but the pass from Cam Newton was behind him. Olsen has four catches for 43 yards this preseason. He is currently being drafted in the 8th round. Rotoworld.com

Matt Schaub completed 13-of-27 passes for 110 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions in Friday's preseason game at Green Bay.

Advice: Schaub was nothing short of brutal, especially when facing the Packers' first-string defense in the first half (61 yards on 22 attempts). His arm strength is shot, he's immobile in the pocket and his starting receivers can't make anything happen after the catch. Through three preseason games, Schaub is 24-of-47 for 218 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. The Raiders are going to have one of the league's worse passing "attacks" this season. Advice: Newton was forced from the field in the second quarter after an awkward hit from Patriots LB Jamie Collins, but returned one play later. Newton's numbers look respectable, but the offense struggled. Newton was sacked three times in five series, and failed to lead the Panthers' past the New England 40.
