  • Chip still claiming QB battle remains open
49ers coach Chip Kelly continues to claim the team's quarterback competition remains open.

Advice: Blaine Gabbert has done nothing to run with the job, but Colin Kaepernick has somehow done even less. All signs have pointed to Gabbert under center for the opener for weeks now. Kap has seemed checked out of San Francisco since last season, and has seen his on-field performance deteriorate at an alarming rate. All he's really accomplished this summer is setting off constitutional debates on Twitter. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:37 pm

  • Brandon Marshall sitting out dress rehearsal
Brandon Marshall is inactive for the Jets' third preseason game.

Advice: Marshall is an 11th-year pro with 882 career catches. He doesn't need a "dress rehearsal" for Week 1. Marshall has little shot at matching last year's ridiculous 109/1,502/14 line, but remains a firm WR1 in an offense that figures to throw as much as any in football. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:09 pm

  • Connor Shaw suffers broken right leg
Bears QB Connor Shaw suffered a broken right leg above the ankle in Saturday's preseason game.

Advice: He was driven immediately to the hospital and will undergo surgery. Shaw "could be back this season," NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported, but Shaw will be placed on injured reserve. Perhaps he'll be released later with a settlement. Rotoworld.com Today, 2:40 pm

  • Connor Shaw suffers nasty leg injury
Bears QB Connor Shaw suffered a serious leg injury Saturday against the Chiefs.

Advice: Shaw suffered what looked like a broken ankle late in the fourth quarter. His leg was placed in an air cast before he was carted off the field. He is likely done for the season. Shaw had been one of the few bright spots for the Bears, completing 5-of-7 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown. Brian Hoyer, who was shaken up after falling hard on his elbow earlier in the game, replaced him at quarterback. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:08 pm

  • Jacquizz Rodgers second back through Saturday
Jacquizz Rodgers rushed once for one yard Saturday against the Chiefs.

Advice: Rodgers did not get much work, but he was again the second back through the rotation Saturday. He would need an injury to Jeremy Langford to return any fantasy value, and even then he would likely be on the wrong side of a committee. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:40 pm

  • Albert Wilson works as the No. 3 receiver
Albert Wilson converted 1-of-4 targets for four yards Saturday against the Bears.

Advice: He added one yard on an end around early in the game. Wilson again worked behind Chris Conley in two-wide sets, and he did not help his case with a bad drop on a screen pass. He is unlikely to come into fantasy value this season. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:26 pm

  • Chris Conley again works as No. 2 receiver
Chris Conley hauled in 2-of-5 targets for 30 yards in the Chiefs' third preseason game Saturday.

Advice: It was not an efficient day for Conley, but he again clearly worked as the No. 2 receiver behind Jeremy Maclin. That role is unlikely to net much fantasy value, but Conley would be very interesting if something happened to Maclin. He finishes the preseason with five catches for 96 yards. • Kaepernick's base salary is guaranteed
Colin Kaepernick's $11.9 million base salary became guaranteed when he was kept on the 49ers' roster through April 1.

Advice: The 49ers also paid Kaepernick a $400,000 offseason workout bonus. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn has made a convincing case on Twitter that Kaepernick's release may be inevitable, but it would be a costly move for the 49ers. • Browns WR Andrew Hawkins could get cut
Browns WR Andrew Hawkins is in danger of getting cut.

  • Zach Miller, Eddie Royal still sitting out
Bears TE Zach Miller and WR Eddie Royal will not play Saturday against the Chiefs.

Advice: Both have returned to practice, but the Bears are being cautious as the duo recover from concussions. Miller has TE1 upside if he can stay healthy, but that has been an issue throughout his career. After an injury-plagued first season in Chicago, Royal should serve as the No. 3 this year. Eagles coach Doug Pederson said Nelson Agholor "really stood out" this week in practice.

Advice: The comments were unprompted, suggesting Agholor's performance was good enough to be at the front of Pederson's mind. A good week of practice is certainly a positive sign, but Agholor needs to build on it with a strong showing Saturday against the Colts. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:24 am

  • Colin Kaepernick sits during national anthem
Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem before Friday night's preseason game.

Advice: This is a non-story, but it is something the 49ers could use against Kap if they decide to move on. "The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," the team said in a statement to Pro Football Talk. "In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem." In response to the "controversy," Kaepernick told NFL Network's Steve Wyche he is "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color." The real story is Kaepernick was dreadful on the field Friday night, almost guaranteeing he will open the season as a backup. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:46 am

  • 'All signs' point to Gabbert as 49ers starter
According to the Sacramento Bee, "all signs" point to Blaine Gabbert getting the Week 1 start versus Los Angeles.

Advice: It's going to be a tough road for Blaine Train, who starts off versus the Rams, at the Panthers, and at the Seahawks. The 49ers then host the Cowboys and Cardinals in Weeks 4-5. Gabbert has done nothing to win the starting quarterback job this preseason, but no superior alternatives have stepped forward. Gabbert starting could be good news for the fantasy value of safety valve TE Vance McDonald. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:46 pm

  • Chip: We haven't talked releasing Kaepernick
Asked Friday night if the 49ers have considered releasing Colin Kaepernick, coach Chip Kelly replied, "There's never been a conversation about cutting Colin Kaepernick."

Advice: Kaepernick was downright dreadful in Friday night's preseason game, looking entirely uncomfortable in new coach Chip Kelly's offense. If the 49ers aren't going to start Kaepernick, they have three options -- trade him, pay him $12 million not to play, or grant Kaepernick his release. If the 49ers opt to keep Kap around, that $12 million figure will be an awfully large bullet to bite. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:42 pm

  • James Starks gets 8 touches Friday night
James Starks rushed seven times for 22 yards and caught his lone target for a two-yard gain in the Packers' third preseason game.

Advice: Eddie Lacy opened the game as the Packers' feature back, but Starks entered after Lacy left and wound up seeing nearly as many plays with Aaron Rodgers. Beat writers expect Lacy and Starks to open the season in an RBBC, with Lacy emerging as the bellcow as winter sets in. Either way, Starks is an undervalued asset who should be owned in all fantasy leagues. He can provide standalone scoring and would be an every-week starter if Fat Eddie went down. • Cobb goes 3-30-1 against 49ers
Randall Cobb caught 3-of-3 targets for 30 yards and a touchdown in the Packers' third preseason game.

Advice: Cobb looked like the player the Packers needed him to be last season -- but he wasn't -- knifing through the 49ers' defense before catching a quick screen from Aaron Rodgers and powering in for a short TD. Cobb tortured 49ers CB Chris Davis in the slot. Still only 26 years old, Cobb is headed for a bounce-back campaign. Recall he was a top-six fantasy receiver as recently as 2014. • Jared Cook dominates snaps with A. Rodgers
Jared Cook caught 4-of-5 targets for 54 yards in the Packers' third preseason game Friday night.

Advice: Cook was a terrifying weapon for the 49ers' defense, shredding them down the seam between the twenties. Most importantly, Cook dominated first-team snaps, seeing 19-of-26 reps compared to just two for Richard Rodgers with the Aaron Rodgers group. Cook has always possessed a tantalizing size-speed combination, and has long been an inconsistent producer with technical flaws. He's late-round flyer material in hopes the light flipping on with Rodgers is real. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:48 pm

  • Kaepernick flubs big preseason opportunity
Colin Kaepernick completed 2-of-6 passes for 14 yards and rushed four times for 18 yards in the 49ers' third preseason game.

Advice: Playing behind Blaine Gabbert, Kaepernick failed to assert himself as a legit contender for the Week 1 starting job. While he made a few innocuous plays with his legs, Kaepernick looked uncomfortable in the pocket and failed to generate a single first down. Kaepernick remains likely to make starts at some point this year, but Gabbert will be the starter on Opening Day. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 9:15 pm

  • Gabbert gets quick hook after 2 drives
Blaine Gabbert completed 2-of-3 passes for 14 yards and rushed twice for 15 yards in the 49ers' third preseason game.

Advice: The Niners treated Gabbert like a locked-in starter, leaving him on the field for only two possessions. They also likely wanted to get a longer look at Colin Kaepernick, of course. Gabbert tossed a swing pass to Quinton Patton for a touchdown, but it was ruled a rushing score because the connection happened behind the line of scrimmage. Gabbert will likely start in Week 1 against the Rams, but he could enter the season on a short leash. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:10 pm

  • Andrew Hawkins catches 2-yard pass Friday
Andrew Hawkins caught his lone target for two yards in the Browns' third preseason game.

Advice: Hawkins is clearly the Browns' No. 4 receiver behind Corey Coleman, Terrelle Pryor, and Josh Gordon, though he may open up the year as the No. 3 with Gordon suspended the first four games. That's if Hawkins makes the team. The Browns have been purging the roster of veterans, and Hawkins makes $2.5 million. His tight relationship with coach Hue Jackson may save him. • 49ers starting Gabbert in 3rd preseason game
Blaine Gabbert is expected to start the 49ers' third preseason game.

Advice: As ESPN's Bob Holtzman notes, it's an "indication" Colin Kaepernick "will have to play really well" to win the 49ers' starting job. It won't be hard to play better than Gabbert, but Gabbert getting the start in the regular season dress rehearsal remains notable. Gabbert can probably still escape as the likely Week 1 starter if he plays competently and Kaepernick struggles at all. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 4:59 pm

  • Kap believes he can still win starting job
Colin Kaepernick said he believes he can still win the starting job.

Advice: "Yeah, most definitely," Kaepernick said. "I’m going to go out and show everything I can these next two games and make sure I put my best foot forward to show this organization, this team, this coaching staff what I’m capable of." Kap's injury issues have given Blaine Gabbert a big head start, but he has not taken advantage of the opportunity through two preseason games. According to Wes Hodkiewicz of the Packers' official website, Jared Cook has "developed a rapport" with Aaron Rodgers the past two weeks.

Advice: Cook was activated from the PUP list two weeks ago from today, and in his first practice with the team, he and Rodgers hooked up for numerous touchdowns in team drills. After returning to a full practice on Monday, Colin Kaepernick declared his previously "dead" arm "back to normal."

Advice: The Sacramento Bee confirms Kaepernick is "on track" to get some playing time in this weekend's third exhibition game. Blaine Gabbert remains the favorite to start Week 1, but Kap could turn it into a competition if he turns it on late in the preseason. Gabbert has struggled in both practices and games. Colin Kaepernick (arm) took part in team drills on Monday.

Advice: Kap is now on track for Friday's regular season dress rehearsal against the Packers. By nearly every account, Kap is not a legitimate contender in the 49ers' supposed quarterback competition. Chris Conley caught 3-of-3 targets for 66 yards in the Chiefs' second preseason game against the Rams.

Advice: Conley ran as the starter opposite Jeremy Maclin in two-wide sets Saturday. He's been working as the X receiver all summer, with Maclin at the Z. Conley beat Rams No. 1 CB Trumaine Johnson a pair of times, and one came on third-and-two that Conley turned into a 37-yard gain by running right by Johnson. Advice: It wasn't pretty, but it was an improvement on Gabbert's dreadful opener. As expected, Gabbert's completions have largely consisted of checkdowns and between-the-numbers throws. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Jeff McLane, 2015 first-rounder Nelson Agholor has "struggled to catch balls, create separation, and run consistent routes" at Eagles camp.
