  • Lions to work out Jimmy Clausen
The Lions will work out free agent Jimmy Clausen on Monday.

Advice: Clausen has been making the rounds, also receiving interest from the Redskins last week. He'd fill a camp-arm role in Detroit behind Matthew Stafford and Dan Orlovsky. Sixth-round rookie Jake Rudock is also on the 90-man roster. Today, 5:59 pm

  • Sam Bradford playing last season in PHI
Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski considers Sam Bradford "extremely unlikely" to be on the Eagles' 2017 roster.

Advice: Kempski's salary cap number in 2017 is $22.5 million. The Eagles will be able to save $13 million by releasing him next offseason, or $17 million by finding a trade partner. Throw in the No. 2 overall selection of Carson Wentz and Bradford is indeed extremely unlikely to last in Philadelphia beyond this season. Today, 12:49 pm

  • Wentz likely to play a ton in preseason
Eagles first-round pick Carson Wentz is expected to get "a ton" of playing time in the preseason.

Advice: The Eagles pretty much know what they have in Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel, and shouldn't feel the need to expose them to exhibition games. Because third-string quarterbacks get no reps during the season, preseason games will be Wentz's best opportunity to gain experience until the Eagles fall out of the playoff race, at which point Wentz might make starts. We would not be surprised if Wentz wound up leading all quarterbacks in preseason snaps this year. Today, 12:47 pm

  • Devontae Booker shined as receiver in spring
ESPN Broncos reporter Jeff Legwold says fourth-round rookie Devontae Booker shined as a receiver out of the backfield this spring.

Advice: Legwold suggests Booker could receive "third-down consideration quickly" if his passing-game chops translate to live practices. RBs coach Eric Studesville already talked up Booker's pass-protection skills. Broncos coach Gary Kubiak has used running back rotations in the past, but not backfields involving specialty roles, and C.J. Anderson is Denver's best pass-blocking back. Anderson's every-down job isn't in danger, but Booker could knock Ronnie Hillman off the roster if Hillman doesn't show an ability to play special teams. Today, 12:36 pm

  • Brandon Pettigrew due back in mid-August
The Detroit Free Press reports TE Brandon Pettigrew (ACL) is "expected back somewhere around the middle of next month."

Advice: If so, he would be ready for Week 1. It's been speculated since the spring that Pettigrew might land on reserve/PUP to open the season, which would cost him the first six games. When healthy, Pettigrew is the Lions' blocking tight end. Today, 12:17 pm

  • Ravens TE Pitta cleared for training camp
Ravens TE Dennis Pitta (hip surgeries) avoided the active/PUP list to begin training camp.

Advice: It's an indication that Pitta is indeed 100 percent or very close to it after appearing in just seven games since the end of the 2012 season. He'll be eligible to practice on Thursday. If Pitta is capable of becoming a contributor, the Ravens could field more two-tight end sets with him and Ben Watson on the field together. Maxx Williams and Crockett Gillmore would be the odd men out. Today, 11:36 am

  • Chris Conley on track to be Chiefs X receiver
Chris Conley ran as the Chiefs' first-team X receiver this spring.

Advice: Jeremy Maclin is Kansas City's Z receiver, with Albert Wilson moving inside to the slot to replace Jason Avant. Wilson may still start in two-receiver sets, but it was clear late last season that the Chiefs wanted Conley more involved. He scored a touchdown in the team's Wild Card win over Houston and caught five passes in Kansas City's Divisional Round loss to the Patriots. A SPARQ freak at 6-foot-2, 213, Conley has some appeal in best-ball fantasy leagues. Today, 11:30 am

  • Corey Fuller (foot) placed on active/PUP
Lions placed WR Corey Fuller (foot) on the active/PUP list.

Advice: Fuller has been shut down since June surgery. He isn't a lock to return in camp. Even when healthy, Fuller is on the outside looking in for a roster spot. Today, 10:59 am

  • Lions place Brandon Pettigrew on active/PUP
Lions placed TE Brandon Pettigrew (knee) on the active/PUP list.

Advice: Pettigrew was never expected to be ready for training camp. He's seven months into his ACL recovery. Pettigrew is a candidate to open the season on reserve/PUP, costing him the first six games. Today, 10:58 am

  • Eagles re-sign McLeod Bethel-Thompson
    Eagles re-signed QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson.

Advice: Bethel-Thompson didn't generate any interest after his release earlier this offseason. He'll provide a camp arm behind Sam Bradford, Chase Daniel, and Carson Wentz. Today, 8:36 am

  • Devontae Booker could play on third downs
Broncos rookie Devontae Booker has a chance to open the season in a third-down role.

Advice: Booker is the No. 2 back after outplaying Ronnie Hillman this offseason. C.J. Anderson could have a near every-down role, but Booker is a threat to his pass game snaps. Booker is a must-own Anderson handcuff. Today, 8:20 am

  • Panthers Considering Ginn on kick returns
The Panthers could use Ted Ginn on kick returns.

Advice: With Kelvin Benjamin returning, Ginn doesn’t project for more than a situational deep threat role on offense. The Panthers want to use special teams to get him more touches. Ginn will also remain Carolina’s punt returner. Today, 6:12 am

  • Todd Bowles says Geno Smith can be starter
Coach Todd Bowles thinks Geno Smith can be the Jets’ starter.

Advice: "I think Geno can be a good starter, but he’s got to prove it in training camp like everybody else," Bowles said. "He’s been in the system a year. We’ll see what he does." It’s not more than coachspeak, but the Jets have thrown support behind Smith all offseason. Despite a standstill in contract talks, Ryan Fitzpatrick remains likely to be the Week 1 starter. • Jaguars TE Jacobs a lock for final roster
The Florida Times Union considers TE Nic Jacobs a lock for the 53-man roster.

Advice: Jacobs has been shut down since OTAs with a wrist injury. He’s fully expected to be ready for training camp. Jacobs is Jacksonville’s top inline blocker behind Marcedes Lewis. Yesterday, 4:21 pm

  • Quincy Enunwa favorite for No. 3 duties
Jets WR Quincy Enunwa is the favorite for the No. 3 receiver job.

Advice: Enunwa played 537 snaps as a hybrid WR/TE last year. With Devin Smith (ACL) sidelined, Enunwa projects for a similar role to open this season, though Jace Amaro’s return might cut into Enunwa’s slot targets. Yesterday, 11:39 am

  • McAdoo thinks Williams primed for bounce back
Giants coach Ben McAdoo reportedly believes Andre Williams is poised for a bounce-back season.

Advice: If he means bounce back as into the backfield for a loss, he may have a point. The owner of a career 3.2 yards-per-carry average, Williams should not be taking work from Rashad Jennings or fifth-round rookie Paul Perkins. Yesterday, 11:04 am

  • De'Anthony Thomas is on the roster bubble
The Kansas City Star's Terez Paylor reports Chiefs WR/RB De'Anthony Thomas is on the roster bubble.

Advice: Paylor says the addition of fifth-rounder Tyreek Hill could put Thomas "in a tough spot." ESPN's Adam Teicher agrees, saying it is unlikely the Chiefs keep both Hill and Thomas. A gadget player at his best, Thomas has played in just 22 games through two NFL seasons. He needs to stay healthy in camp to have any shot at a roster spot. Yesterday, 9:26 am

  • Redskins work out free agent QB Jimmy Clausen
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports the Redskins worked out free agent QB Jimmy Clausen Monday.

Advice: The Redskins re-signed backup QB Colt McCoy to a three-year, $9 million deal in March and added Nate Sudfeld in the sixth round of April's draft, so it is a bit surprising they are working out backup quarterback types. It is possible they are just updating their emergency list. Clausen will likely be nothing more than a camp arm if he signs. Jul 18, 9:53 am

  • Wentz likely to open year as healthy scratch
Eagles coach Doug Pederson said if the season started today, Carson Wentz would be a healthy inactive.

Advice: Most teams dress only two quarterbacks on game day and Wentz appears to be a distant third behind Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel. Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice believes the best-case scenario is for Bradford to have a strong season so the Eagles could flip him for an early-round pick in 2017. That would pave the way for Wentz to see the field. We are still not ruling out Wentz making starts late this season, specifically if/when the Eagles fall out of the playoff hunt. Jul 17, 5:51 am
