  • Titans want red-zone role for Green-Beckham
The Titans want to use Dorial Green-Beckham as a red-zone threat.

Advice: "It’s something you try to simulate, but a lot of times you can’t guarantee the coverage you’re going to get," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "So all we can do is try to prepare him in practice. When you get to the season, it’s about matchups." Green-Beckham was held out of last week's dress rehearsal with an ankle injury. He hasn't played with the first team during the preseason, but remains a high-upside late-round flyer. Green-Beckham will open the season behind Kendall Wright, Harry Douglas, and Hakeem Nicks. Joseph Randle was an unexpected absence from the Cowboys' kickoff luncheon on Wednesday because he had to be in Kansas "for a court appearance."

Advice: Per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Randle's trip to Wichita "was not related" to a February incident where his ex-girlfriend alleged domestic violence, and was "likely" due to "either a family law case, or a misdemeanor charge." • Packers WR Janis 'hasn't won over' Rodgers
Packers second-year WR Jeff Janis is behind rookie Ty Montgomery because Janis "hasn't fully won over his quarterback yet."

Advice: Trust is critical between pass catchers and their quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers apparently doesn't yet trust Janis enough for him to have a significant role in Green Bay's offense. "Jeff will have some great days and some days where mentally he's making too many mistakes," Rodgers said. "The talent and athleticism is there. We just need to see from all those guys battling for those two spots just some more consistency." • Ty Montgomery favorite for 3rd receiver job
Third-round pick Ty Montgomery is still considered to have the "upper hand" for Green Bay's No. 3 receiver job.

Advice: Playing outside at Z receiver, Montgomery is coming off a third preseason game where he posted a 2-71 receiving line working in three-wide sets alongside Randall Cobb and Davante Adams. Montgomery is very clearly ahead of Jeff Janis, who "hasn't fully won over" Aaron Rodgers. Montgomery is a worthy late-round flyer in re-draft leagues, with an up arrow on his Dynasty value. Advice: Cruz admitted Tuesday that his availability is in question, and at this point we'd bet against him suiting up Week 1 at Dallas. Advice: "I hope," Ryan said. "If not then the next man has to step up. So we will see. If he is not ready to go, he won’t be in there." According to ESPN's Josina Anderson, McCoy is dealing with a "small tear" in the hamstring and "it tore in a spot where it couldn't have been any better." McCoy has done next to nothing at practice the past two weeks, as he's only able to perform light footwork, agility, and cardio. • Matt Jones to have offensive role as rookie
The Redskins envision Alfred Morris and Matt Jones as a "physical tandem" in the backfield.

Advice: Jones has cut up the preseason, averaging 6.95 YPC on 20 carries. He hits the hole with such explosiveness as a powerful downhill runner that the Redskins have been forced to give him back-to-back rest days to open up practice this week. Jones hasn't passed Morris on the depth chart, but the Redskins will use him plenty this year, giving him some standalone value as an RB4. • Joseph Randle to see 10-15 carries per game?
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram suggests Joseph Randle may open the season handling 10-15 carries per game "with (Darren) McFadden slightly below that."

Advice: "At the end of the day, we’re both going to get carries however they decide to play it out," said McFadden. Both backs seem resigned to the fact that the Cowboys are committed to a running back by committee. Beat writer Drew Davison confirms none of Dallas' backs "has done enough to separate themselves from the pack." McFadden is shaping up as a dicey flex play to begin the year, while Randle will be toward the back end of RB2s. Bears coach John Fox was "terse and non-specific" when asked about Alshon Jeffery's calf injury on Tuesday.

Advice: Jeffery hasn't practiced since August 11. Fox's Tuesday attitude is alarming on its face, but the Bears' new head coach has already made it clear he thinks he doesn't owe anyone anything when it comes to injury information. Fox views the trivial details of his team as top secret information to be protected in a bunker. • Report: Cowboys RBBC approach 'not a bluff'
According to Yahoo's Charles Robinson, the Cowboys' plan to use an RBBC backfield is "not a bluff," and the rotation will be a "committee in the purest NFL form."

Advice: Per Robinson, "the Cowboys are adamant that their elite offensive line can be the glue that elevates a collection of parts into a greater whole." In other words, the Cowboys are banking on their O-Line and less on the talent of their backfield, which is questionable to be kind with Joe Randle, Darren McFadden, and Lance Dunbar vying for work. Coleman's lowlight was a drop on a pass from Luke McCown. His highlight was a 27-yard second-quarter gain on a deep crosser. Advice: Green-Beckham has flashed big time on the field, ripping off a 32-yard gain in the Titans' preseason opener and catching four balls for 40 yards in the second exhibition week. Whisenhunt, however, noted that Green-Beckham cost the team a 37-yard gain with a miscue on Sunday night and says Green-Beckham is "still finding his way" and "has some catching up to do." Green-Beckham did run with the ones a bit on Sunday. He's climbing the ladder. Rotoworld.com Aug 24, 1:24 pm

  • Randle admits he is still in a competition
Joseph Randle admitted there is still a battle for snaps in the Cowboys' backfield.

Advice: Darren McFadden started the second preseason game, gaining just four yards on three attempts. Lance Dunbar worked with the first-team offense as the passing down back, catching two passes for three yards. Randle had the best night of the three, but he did not see his first carry until after Tony Romo left the field. The Cowboys could have been sending a message to Randle by limiting his first-team reps, but his usage against the 49ers suggests Randle's hold on the starting job is tenuous at best. He is a risky pick in the third round. Rotoworld.com Aug 24, 7:53 am

  • Joseph Randle plays in 2nd preseason game
Updating a previous item, Joseph Randle did play in the Cowboys' second preseason game on Sunday night.

Advice: It was reported Randle would be inactive due to his recurring oblique strain, but the third-year back got in some work off the bench. Randle played behind Darren McFadden, rushing seven times for 30 yards. McFadden started and managed four yards on three rushing attempts. So long as Randle can stay healthy, he'll remain the favorite for lead back work in Dallas. Rotoworld.com Aug 23, 6:32 pm

  • Cowboys hold Randle out of 2nd preseason game
Joseph Randle (oblique) is sitting out Dallas' second preseason game.

Advice: Darren McFadden will start. Randle's injury has been flaring up the past couple of weeks. While it's not a long-term concern, the injury is a reminder of Randle's extremely-limited NFL track record. Randle has just 105 career carries through two NFL seasons, yet his ADP is currently in the middle of the third round. He played four snaps in Dallas' two playoff games last January. • Jeff Janis inefficient against Steelers
Jeff Janis caught 3-of-7 targets for 25 yards in the Packers' second preseason game.

Advice: Janis had a bad drop on a third down, but he made up for it with back-to-back nine yard receptions on the very next drive. Janis was the first wide receiver off the bench when Jordy Nelson was forced from the game with a torn ACL, and he should be considered the favorite for snaps next to Davante Adams and Randall Cobb in three-wide sets. He is a great late-round flier, though his ADP is sure to skyrocket in the coming days. Rotoworld.com Aug 23, 1:20 pm

  • Saints WR Nick Toon suffers high ankle sprain
Saints WR Nick Toon suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday night's preseason game and will be shelved 2-3 weeks.

Advice: The injury effectively ends New Orleans' No. 3 wideout battle, where Brandon Coleman will open the season in three-receiver sets alongside Marques Colston and Brandin Cooks. Toon had been something of a disappointment in camp following a fast finish to the 2014 season. Toon finished the 2015 preseason with two catches for 11 yards. His roster spot should still be secure. • Jarrett Boykin draws 12 targets against Miami
Panthers WR Jarrett Boykin was targeted a game-high 12 times in Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins.

Advice: He caught six passes for 53 yards with his longest gain going for 17 yards. Boykin was pretty much an afterthought for the Panthers until Kelvin Benjamin went down with a torn ACL last week. Though it's unlikely Boykin will emerge as a fantasy weapon, his chances of making the 53-man roster have improved immensely now that Benjamin is out for the year. Rotoworld.com Aug 23, 7:20 am

  • CJ2K out a week or two with pulled hamstring
Chris Johnson will miss a week or two with a pulled hamstring.

Advice: He suffered the injury at Thursday's practice and could be sidelined for the remainder of Arizona's preseason slate. It's been a tough offseason for Johnson, who was injured in a drive-by shooting and didn't sign with a team until August. He's hoping to be the Cards' No. 2 back behind starter Andre Ellington.
