  • Devin Smith has broken ribs, punctured lung
Jets rookie WR Devin Smith's specific injury is three fractured ribs and a partially punctured lung.

Advice: This is just a blurb for bookkeeping purposes. The timetable on Smith's recovery still stands at 4-6 weeks, putting his status for Week 1 in serious question. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:44 pm

  • Rams felt Quick injury was career threatening
The Rams feared Brian Quick's shoulder injury was "career threatening" when he went down in Week 8 of last season.

Advice: Quick dislocated the shoulder and tore his rotator cuff. "It’s remarkable what he’s overcome," coach Jeff Fisher said. "The damage he sustained to his shoulder was significant and there was some talk early on that it might’ve been career-threatening and that he might not be able to come back." Quick has come back, even avoiding the active/PUP list to open training camp. He's penned in as the Rams' starting wideout opposite Kenny Britt. Rotoworld.com Today, 1:06 pm

  • Cassel 'leader in clubhouse' for Bills QB job
The Buffalo News considers Matt Cassel the "leader in the clubhouse right now" in the Bills' quarterback derby.

Advice: Cassel hasn't been particularly sharp in early-camp practices, but he's been more consistent than E.J. Manuel, who has reportedly appeared overwhelmed. Tyrod Taylor would give the Bills' offense a potentially-exciting read-option element, but his passing leaves much to be desired. Regardless of which player "wins" the quarterback battle, his job will be strictly avoiding turnovers in 2015. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:29 pm

  • Chiefs sign Darrin Reaves
Chiefs signed RB Darrin Reaves, formerly of the Panthers.

Advice: They also waived RB LaVance Taylor, who generated some headlines for "earning" a 90-man roster spot by tweeting his highlight tape to the Chiefs' Twitter account. The Chiefs are a team that utilizes SPARQ scores to make decisions at the bottom of their roster. Reaves has a better SPARQ score than Taylor. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:07 pm

  • Bradford expected to start in Week 1
According to NJ.com's Eliot Shorr-Parks, it was "clear" at the first practice of Eagles camp that Sam Bradford -- not Mark Sanchez -- will be the team's starting quarterback in Week 1.

Advice: Bradford handled every first-team rep on the first day of training camp, while Sanchez practiced strictly with the twos. For what it's worth, Bradford went 16-of-21 passing in team drills across 27 reps, throwing one interception and no TDs. Bradford reportedly looked "rusty," as expected, but was not outplayed by Sanchez, who declined to challenge the Eagles' defense downfield. Rotoworld.com Today, 11:29 am

  • Ben: Wheaton will start over Martavis Bryant
Appearing on Sirius XM Radio, Ben Roethlisberger stated that Markus Wheaton will be the Steelers' No. 2 wide receiver this season and predicted Wheaton will be Pittsburgh's "breakout player."

Advice: This should deal a blow to Martavis Bryant's skyrocketing ADP. "I think Markus Wheaton is our breakout player of the year," said Ben. "I want that. I want him to have that pressure. Because when we're in two wide receivers, he's our No. 2. And we're asking him to play outside. And we go three wide receivers, we ask him to move inside." Bryant's elbow procedure won't help his chances of earning a consistent role in two-wide receiver sets. Wheaton is coming off a highly disappointing 2014 campaign, but will be worth a late-round flier in all fantasy formats if he indeed keeps a full-time role in one of the NFL's premier offenses. • Duke Johnson will be out 'a little while'
Browns coach Mike Pettine said Sunday that Duke Johnson's hamstring injury will keep him out "a little while."

Advice: With Terrance West (calf) and Glenn Winston (fitness) also out a few days, the only healthy backs at Browns camp are Isaiah Crowell and Shaun Draughn. The Browns may sign a free agent runner this week. As hamstring injuries are highly susceptible to aggravation, we'd expect the Browns to slow play Johnson's recovery. Missed practices are a concern for Johnson's 2015 playing time. Rotoworld.com Today, 9:23 am

Duron Carter said he gained 10 pounds of muscle this offseason.

Advice: Carter said he feels like a "bigger, better player." Even if that's the case, Carter will have a hard time cracking the 53-man roster, particularly with Andre Johnson, T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief and Phillip Dorsett ahead of him on the depth chart. He's likely headed for the practice squad. Rotoworld.com Today, 9:11 am

    Panthers waived/injured WR Stephen Hill.

Advice: Hill injured his right knee at Saturday's practice and has since been diagnosed with a torn ACL. Paul Browning will take Hill's spot on the active roster. • Browns give WR Terrelle Pryor reps with 1s
Terrelle Pryor was sprinkled in with the first-team offense at Browns camp on Sunday.

Advice: It's a good sign. Whereas many players in Pryor's position-conversion circumstance might linger with the third-team offense, Pryor is already making a push for meaningful practice reps. Pryor has drawn rave reviews at wide receiver early on, with both Dwayne Bowe and Joe Haden noting how "easy" Pryor has made the position switch look. Pryor is worth stashing in deeper Dynasty leagues. The Browns' shortage of wide receiver talent could result in substantial playing time for Pryor out wide in 2015. At 6-foot-5, 232, Pryor would make for an inviting red-zone presence. He's also as tough as nails. Rotoworld.com Today, 8:31 am

Advice: The Panthers signed new WR Paul Browning on Sunday morning, indicating a need for depth at wide receiver and also requiring the team to clear a roster spot. I just felt something in my hamstring, stopped for precautionary reasons. We're going to take a look at it today." • Jets rookie WR Devin Smith has fractured ribs
Second-round WR Devin Smith suffered broken ribs in the first practice of Jets camp and may miss all of the preseason.

Advice: Smith has been hospitalized with the painful injury. It should be emphasized that Smith broke multiple ribs, not just one. The injury occurred while Smith was "making a leaping catch" in Friday's practice. The 37th pick in this year's draft, Smith was going to compete for third receiver duties with Jeremy Kerley behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. While we didn't have high hopes for Smith's re-draft league prospects, so much lost practice time in OC Chan Gailey's system may prevent Smith from making any meaningful early-season impact. Matt Cassel received the first rep in team drills when the Bills opened training camp Friday.

Advice: Tyrod Taylor was second up, while E.J. Manuel and Matt Simms were Nos. 3 and 4. We wouldn't read much into this, as this figures to be a full-blown competition for much of the summer. ESPN Cleveland's Tony Grossi called Terrelle Pryor "the most intriguing player on hand," at Browns camp, and "a possible playmaker who could be a game-changer."

Advice: On the opening day of Browns camp, Pryor stole the show. He didn't drop a single pass and "looked like a natural" at receiver after having never played the position at any level. Advice: He will be "eased" in. Either way, it's a positive development after an extensive shoulder operation to repair an injury that ended Quick's would've-been-breakout 2014 campaign. Quick and Kenny Britt should line up as St. Louis' Opening Day starters at wideout, with Stedman Bailey and Tavon Austin mixing in for sub-packages. • Markus Wheaton had impressive offseason
Although Martavis Bryant is garnering more hype, NFL Network's Albert Breer has heard third-year WR Markus Wheaton had "probably the best offseason of the Steelers' wide receivers."

Advice: The 79th overall pick in the 2013 draft, Wheaton has fallen short of expectations through two seasons, managing 59 catches for 708 yards and two touchdowns on 99 targets. Still, Wheaton is only 24 years old and appears to be entrenched as Pittsburgh's slot receiver in what will be a base three-wide attack. Browns coach Mike Pettine hasn't closed the door on Terrelle Pryor at quarterback, but wants him to focus "1,000 percent" on receiver for training camp.

Advice: Perhaps Pettine is beginning to confront the reality that Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel are his top-two quarterbacks. For his part, Pryor believes he's competing as a "slash" player, someone who dabbles at quarterback while getting touches elsewhere. Advice: Beat writer Nate Ulrich says the Browns would like Johnson "to eventually develop into the (lead-back) role," but he won't open the season as Cleveland's first-team back. The Browns are intrigued with Johnson's receiving skills, however, and he remains set up for a large role. ESPN Bills reporter Mike Rodak left Matt Cassel off his initial 53-man roster projection heading into training camp.

Advice: Rodak has been driving home the point that Cassel is squarely on the roster bubble in Buffalo. On his way-early roster projection, Rodak has the Bills keeping E.J. Manuel and Tyrod Taylor and cutting Cassel and Matt Simms. There's obviously plenty of time for Cassel to right his spring wrongs, but this just goes to show how truly awful he must have looked at OTAs and minicamp. Rotoworld.com Jul 24, 8:26 am
