  • Brandon Coleman 'on the rise' at Saints camp
ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett reports WR Brandon Coleman is "playing faster and more at ease" this summer after struggling as a rookie.

Advice: Coleman had a tough time adjusting to the speed of the NFL as a priority UDFA last year, dropping passes on a daily basis. He was part of the Saints' final cuts and spent his entire rookie year on the practice squad. Coleman is competing with Joe Morgan, Josh Morgan and Seantavius Jones for two roster spots. Triplett calls Coleman a player "on the rise" who could become a red-zone threat. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:42 pm

  • Maxx Williams started slow at spring practice
Ravens second-round pick Maxx Williams "didn't get off to the fastest start" at spring practices.

Advice: Williams admitted to struggling to digest OC Marc Trestman's playbook, and the Baltimore Sun is projecting Crockett Gillmore as the Ravens' Week 1 starter at tight end. The Sun writes the Ravens "might need to temper expectations" for Williams in his first year. Fantasy owners should heed this advice. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 4:54 pm

  • 'Possibility' Todd Gurley starts Week 1
The Rams' official website believes there's a "possibility" Todd Gurley (knee) starts Week 1.

Advice: Gurley's outlook has improved considerably after he avoided the PUP list to begin camp, but writer Myles Simmons still believes it's "more probable" Tre Mason starts Week 1 than Gurley. Simmons points toward coach Jeff Fisher's usual conservatism with rookies as evidence. Regardless of who starts Week 1, it's looking more and more likely that Gurley has a big role by the end of September. His health is farther along than was previously expected. • Rams' site: Mason most likely to start Week 1
The Rams' official website expects Tre Mason to "still play a significant role" in 2015, and believes it's "more probable" Mason starts Week 1 than Todd Gurley.

Advice: Writer Myles Simmons believes Gurley will be brought along slowly, and reminds that coach Jeff Fisher "almost always likes to be conservative with rookies." This is true, but the fact that Gurley is avoiding the PUP list to begin camp — and therefore the season — suggests an early-season return, and a big role along with it. Even if he makes a few early-season starts, Mason is best regarded as an RB3/handcuff. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 4:12 pm

  • RGIII 'exhibited growth' this offseason
Redskins sources tell the Washington Post that Robert Griffin III "exhibited growth" this offseason.

Advice: Mike Jones' report comes six days after an "anonymous offensive coach" told ESPN that Griffin was "done." Although the Redskins are apparently cautiously optimistic about RGIII's 2015, Jones reports "nobody is ready to launch a 'He’s baaaack!' campaign yet." Griffin was a special talent before injuries started sapping his explosiveness, but it's hard to see him regaining his rookie form. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 4:05 pm

  • Marques Colston beginning camp on PUP list
Saints placed WR Marques Colston on the active/PUP list.

Advice: Colston's "injury" is undisclosed. He shouldn't be sidelined more than a couple of days. Colston is on the record as expecting his practice reps to be "managed" all season. The Saints don't need to push their 32-year-old wideout in camp and the preseason. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 2:19 pm

49ers placed RB Carlos Hyde on the active/NFI list.

Advice: It's believed to be a day-to-day issue, but still unideal for a player who is supposed to take control of the 49ers' backfield this season. Hyde missed time earlier this offseason with a leg issue. He should be good to go for San Francisco's first preseason game. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 2:12 pm

  • Cincy so far unimpressed with Denarius Moore
According to Bengals.com, the team was "hoping to see more" from Denarius Moore this offseason.

Advice: Moore's roster odds have improved with James Wright (knee) headed to injured reserve, but he was apparently unimpressive in OTAs and minicamp. It's troubling news for a wideout who has never lacked for physical skills. If Moore can't revive his career under OC Hue Jackson, who coached him to his best season in 2011, it's probably never going to happen. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 12:49 pm

  • Markus Wheaton had impressive offseason
Although Martavis Bryant is garnering more hype, NFL Network's Albert Breer has heard third-year WR Markus Wheaton had "probably the best offseason of the Steelers' wide receivers."

Advice: The 79th overall pick in the 2013 draft, Wheaton has fallen short of expectations through two seasons, managing 59 catches for 708 yards and two touchdowns on 99 targets. Still, Wheaton is only 24 years old and appears to be entrenched as Pittsburgh's slot receiver in what will be a base three-wide attack. We don't have high expectations for Wheaton in re-draft leagues, but he's still worth rostering in all Dynasty and best-ball settings. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 12:31 pm

  • Bengals waive/injured WR James Wright
    Bengals waived/injured WR James Wright.

Advice: Per Bengals.com's Geoff Hobson, Wright is "facing season-ending knee surgery" after apparently tearing his PCL late last year. The injury was previously undisclosed. Wright had been penciled in as Cincinnati's No. 4 receiver. Hobson reports the Bengals are expected to work out a group of veteran receivers before camp begins on Friday. The No. 239 pick of last year's draft, Wright caught five passes in 11 games. He should clear waivers and revert to injured reserve, but it's not a given. • Le'Veon Bell's suspension reduced to 2 games
The NFL has reduced Le'Veon Bell's suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy from three games to two.

Advice: That sound you hear is Bell racing back atop draft boards. Including the Steelers' bye, Bell is still ticketed to miss 23 percent of the fantasy regular season, but he's a dual-threat difference maker who provides a weekly edge in all formats of fantasy. That's especially true in PPR leagues, where Bell is a no-brainer at No. 1 overall. Bell is the goal-line back and primary checkdown target for an offense that wants to score 30 points per game this season. DeAngelo Williams will start in Weeks 1 and 2, where Pittsburgh is facing New England and San Francisco. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 11:51 am

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Cowboys have "no interest" in free agent Ray Rice.

Advice: The Cowboys have been speculatively connected to Rice and Chris Johnson, but ESPN's Todd Archer previously tweeted those links are being made by "everybody but the Cowboys." Per the Star-Telegram's Charean Williams, the Cowboys "haven't ruled out signing a vet back, but not for at least a couple weeks." • Todd Gurley beginning camp on active roster
Updating an earlier item, Rams RB Todd Gurley (ACL) will begin training camp on the active roster.

Advice: It means Gurley is ineligible for the reserve/NFI list, which would have cost him the first six games of the season. It's a major surprise after the Rams insisted all offseason they would take things slow with the No. 10 overall pick. It still doesn't guarantee Gurley will be ready for Week 1, but he's trending in that direction. Gurley's Week 1 status will be confirmed if he suits up for preseason action. Speaking in a Tuesday radio interview, Rams GM Les Snead said RB Todd Gurley (ACL) has passed his conditioning test, and should progress to football activities "soon."

Advice: This doesn't change the fact that Gurley will open camp on the active/NFI list, but he's progressing as the Rams hoped. Gurley is expected to begin participating in individual drills sooner rather than later. • Philbin open to more carries for Lamar Miller
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin says the team is open to giving Lamar Miller more carries in 2015.

Advice: Miller notoriously failed to hit 20 carries in any game last year, despite averaging an explosive 5.09 yards per tote in one of the NFL's most efficient rushing offenses. Miller did handle 19 carries in each of Miami's final two games, however, and Philbin left the door open for Miller to be treated more like a workhorse this year. "I would tell you I’ve never been in a meeting where I’ve said to [OC] Bill [Lazor] or [RBs coach] Jeff Nixon or the offensive line coaches (that) ‘Lamar can’t carry the ball 20 times a game. He can’t do it,’" Philbin insisted. "I’ve never heard that. That’s never come out of my mouth. ... I would tell you, if he’s cranking and he got it 24 times a game and he’s healthy and he’s fast and he’s explosive, it doesn’t bother me one bit." If Philbin stays true to his word, Miller will offer high-end RB1 upside after finishing 2014 as fantasy's No. 9 overall back. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 10:28 am

  • Le'Veon Bell's suspension could be reduced
The NFL and Le'Veon Bell are negotiating a settlement that could reduce his three-game suspension to one or two games.

Advice: Bell's suspension stems from an August 2014 incident in which he was pulled over with marijuana in his car, and got charged with both possession and a DUI. Bell's camp is arguing that he's being punished twice for the same offense. As a player with no known history of breaking the law, he appears to have a legit shot at a reduction. Bell, already in the conversation at No. 1 overall in fantasy, would surely be the top pick if he only will sit 1-2 games. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:07 am

  • Garoppolo showed better command this spring
Jimmy Garoppolo reportedly showed far better command of the offense this offseason.

Advice: Garoppolo was still trying to get his head around the offense as a second-round rookie a year ago. He still looked good in the preseason, going 46-of-72 (58.2%) for 618 yards (7.82 YPA) with five TDs, one INT and a 99.0 passer rating. With Tom Brady's suspension looming, Garoppolo got a bunch of first-team reps in the spring. We expect him to hit the ground running if Brady misses any time. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:55 am

  • Terrance West fell down depth chart at OTAs
Terrance West appeared to surrender reps to Duke Johnson and Shaun Draughn during OTAs and minicamp.

Advice: The Browns have said they want to ride the hot hand at running back this season. It's going to be very difficult for West to get that hot hand if he's fourth in line behind Isaiah Crowell, Johnson and Draughn. West had a rocky rookie year, often looking average on the field and getting in the coaches' doghouse off it. The Browns used a third-round pick on Johnson in May. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:16 am

Suspended RB Le'Veon Bell was a full participant for the start of Steelers camp on Monday.

Advice: Bell missed last January's playoff loss to Baltimore with a hyperextended knee, and recently said he wasn't 100-percent healthy. Per beat writer Jeremy Fowler, however, Le'Veon looked "noticeably explosive" on the first day of camp. Advice: Wagoner calls predictions of the Rams holding Gurley until Week 7 "too far flung." • Anti-domestic violence group is pro-Ray Rice
The co-founders of an anti-domestic violence group say free agent Ray Rice deserves another chance.

Advice: The pendulum of public opinion is starting to swing back in Rice's favor. "We have been around a lot of abusive men, but our experience with Ray has been tremendously positive," said Tony Porter of A CALL TO MEN. "We feel strongly about him having the opportunity of having a second chance. He's deserving of it." The problem is Rice's on-field ceiling isn't high enough to offset the public relations headache. • No appeal hearing yet on Le'Veon's 3-game ban
Suspended RB Le'Veon Bell has not yet had an appeal hearing with the NFL regarding his three-game ban.

Advice: Bell told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler he has "no idea" regarding a suspension-appeal update, "or if the league is even looking at it." It's frustrating news as training camp inches close. For now, fantasy owners should be approaching Le'Veon as if he'll miss the first three weeks of the season, and consider any reduction in the three-game suspension an unexpected bonus. • Report: Unnamed team almost signed Ray Rice
According to ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley, one unnamed NFL team "seriously considered" signing free agent Ray Rice earlier this offseason, before ownership stepped in to nix the deal.

Advice: The owner of the undisclosed team had "concerns about public reaction to signing (Rice) given the taped incident" of domestic violence. Although that deal fell through, it's an indication that teams are indeed giving Rice consideration, even if they aren't being widely reported amongst the media. ESPN's Ed Werder reports free agent Ray Rice "and supporters" have been calling NFL teams in hopes of Rice getting another shot.

Advice: Among the supporters is ex-Bucs coach Greg Schiano. Schiano is a running joke in media and fan circles, but has a tight bond with coaches around the NFL, including Bill Belichick. Rice is still only 28 years old, and could add value to a backfield in a passing-down role, or even return as a lead runner in the right situation. Advice: "The injury slowed his legs, and his ego will not allow him to hit rock bottom and actually grind his way back up the right way," the coach continued. In a poll of 35 coaches and personnel executives, the vast majority felt this way. "To get better in this league, you have to have a degree of humility," a personnel director said. • Dolphins haven't rode Miller hard in past
Lamar Miller never got 20 carries in a game last year and only went over 15 carries in 6-of-16 games.

Advice: Miller was highly productive, averaging a gaudy 5.08 YPC, catching 38 balls and scoring nine total touchdowns. But he was handed the ball just 13.5 times per game even though the Dolphins only had pitiful Daniel Thomas and Damien Williams as backups in the wake of Knowshon Moreno's injuries. Now the staff has talented Jay Ajayi to pound between the tackles, giving them another excuse not to turn Miller into a bellcow. We're not expecting more than 13-15 carries per game this year either.
