  • Fins have had no contract talks with Vernon
The Dolphins have had no contract talks with contract-year RE Olivier Vernon.

Advice: Vernon is entering his age-24 season and the final year of his rookie deal. He's recorded 18 sacks over the past two seasons and plays above-average run defense. Vernon is expected to command Cameron Jordan money -- five years and $55 million with $33.5 million guaranteed -- at the very least and may be a candidate for the Dolphins' franchise tag. Miami may have to choose between on-the-rise Vernon or aging veteran LE Cameron Wake next offseason. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:40 pm

  • No charges filed against Broncos DE Smith
The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Department has decided not to file charges against Broncos DE Antonio Smith.

Advice: Smith was under investigation for some creepy alleged "sexual in nature" child abuse in May. The police department has apparently concluded its investigation, and Smith will report to Broncos camp this week. The versatile 33-year-old will likely play a big role while DE Derek Wolfe is suspended the first four weeks. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:10 pm

  • Kamar Aiken dominated 1st-tm reps this spring
Ravens WR Kamar Aiken "consistently" practiced with the first-team offense at spring workouts, ahead of Breshad Perriman.

Advice: The Ravens aren't handing a starting job to first-round pick Perriman, who "needs to become more consistent" after showing a propensity for dropped passes in OTAs and minicamp. Perriman also struggled with drops at UCF. Unlike the Panthers last year with Kelvin Benjamin, the Ravens seem hesitant to throw Perriman into the fire. This is a camp battle to watch throughout August. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:04 pm

  • Maxx Williams started slow at spring practice
Ravens second-round pick Maxx Williams "didn't get off to the fastest start" at spring practices.

Advice: Williams admitted to struggling to digest OC Marc Trestman's playbook, and the Baltimore Sun is projecting Crockett Gillmore as the Ravens' Week 1 starter at tight end. The Sun writes the Ravens "might need to temper expectations" for Williams in his first year. Fantasy owners should heed this advice. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:54 pm

  • Zimmer high on Eric Kendricks
Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said second-round pick Eric Kendricks was "ahead of most rookies" at minicamp in June.

Advice: The brother of Eagles ILB Mychal Kendricks, Eric played in a pro-style defense under Jim Mora at UCLA and has a chance to be an every-down player at Mike linebacker in Zimmer's scheme as a rookie. To play in sub-packages, Kendricks will likely have to show better coverage skills than WLB Chad Greenway in practice. Kendricks offers immediate LB2 upside in IDP leagues. • Rams' site: Mason most likely to start Week 1
The Rams' official website expects Tre Mason to "still play a significant role" in 2015, and believes it's "more probable" Mason starts Week 1 than Todd Gurley.

Advice: Writer Myles Simmons believes Gurley will be brought along slowly, and reminds that coach Jeff Fisher "almost always likes to be conservative with rookies." This is true, but the fact that Gurley is avoiding the PUP list to begin camp — and therefore the season — suggests an early-season return, and a big role along with it. Even if he makes a few early-season starts, Mason is best regarded as an RB3/handcuff. Rotoworld.com Today, 4:12 pm

  • Jimmie Ward (foot) ready for training camp
49ers DB Jimmie Ward (foot surgery) has been cleared for training camp.

Advice: Ward went down last Week 10, and missed the 49ers' entire offseason program. The No. 30 overall pick of last year's draft, Ward flashed upside as a rookie, but was continually slowed by injury. The versatile defensive back will begin the year with nickel duties, provided he's healthy. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:38 pm

  • Darnell Dockett cleared for training camp
49ers DE Darnell Dockett (ACL) has been cleared for training camp.

Advice: Dockett tore his ACL last August. Headed into his age-34 campaign, Dockett figures to be brought along slowly even though he's avoided the PUP list. Not the pass rusher he once was, Dockett is unlikely to come close to the 890 snaps he played for Arizona in 2013. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:34 pm

  • Ryan Williams revers to injured reserve
Cowboys placed RB Ryan Williams (knee) on injured reserve.

Advice: It turns out Williams was waived/injured, not released. Unsurprisingly, he went unclaimed on waivers. Recovering from a June "procedure," Williams just can't get his troublesome knee healthy. Williams will likely be released with an injury settlement if/when he gets healthy in 2015. • Markus Wheaton had impressive offseason
Although Martavis Bryant is garnering more hype, NFL Network's Albert Breer has heard third-year WR Markus Wheaton had "probably the best offseason of the Steelers' wide receivers."

Advice: The 79th overall pick in the 2013 draft, Wheaton has fallen short of expectations through two seasons, managing 59 catches for 708 yards and two touchdowns on 99 targets. Still, Wheaton is only 24 years old and appears to be entrenched as Pittsburgh's slot receiver in what will be a base three-wide attack. We don't have high expectations for Wheaton in re-draft leagues, but he's still worth rostering in all Dynasty and best-ball settings. Rotoworld.com Today, 12:31 pm

  • Report: Cowboys have no interest in Ray Rice
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports the Cowboys have "no interest" in free agent Ray Rice.

Advice: The Cowboys have been speculatively connected to Rice and Chris Johnson, but ESPN's Todd Archer previously tweeted those links are being made by "everybody but the Cowboys." Per the Star-Telegram's Charean Williams, the Cowboys "haven't ruled out signing a vet back, but not for at least a couple weeks." They want to see how Joe Randle, Darren McFadden, and Lance Dunbar look early in camp. Rotoworld.com Today, 11:31 am

  • Harrison Smith admits extension is unlikely
Vikings FS Harrison Smith admits he's unlikely to sign an extension before the season.

Advice: Coming off a breakout campaign, the No. 29 overall pick of the 2012 draft is due just $6.64 million over the next two seasons. Smith does believe he's in Minnesota for the long haul, however. "You can count on it," Smith said of his odds of remaining in the Twin Cities. Locking Smith up next offseason will likely be a priority for the Vikings. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:59 am

  • Cowboys add Gus Johnson to replace Williams
    Cowboys signed RB Gus Johnson.

Advice: Johnson went undrafted out of Stephen F. Austin, where he was the 2014 Southland Conference Player of the Year. He ran a disappointing 4.70 at the Combine, but posted solid vertical (36 1/2") and broad (10') jump numbers, and then improved his forty to the mid-4.5s at his Pro Day. Johnson will start off as the No. 4 or 5 RB in Dallas, but is a name to monitor. The players in front (Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar) aren't exactly world-beaters. • Cowboys dump RB Ryan Williams before camp
    Cowboys released RB Ryan Williams.

Advice: The oft-injured Williams couldn't stay out of the training room again, undergoing a knee procedure after he experienced swelling in June. The Cowboys added Stephen F. Austin UDFA Gus Johnson to take his place on the 90-man roster. Unless Chris Johnson or another veteran comes aboard, it looks like the Cowboys will roll with Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar as their top-three running backs. • Amukamara raves about Cruz's rehab
Giants CB Prince Amukamara raved about Victor Cruz (knee) after the duo worked out together recently.

Advice: "I'm telling you, this guy looked fab... I'm telling you. Remember that I said this. This guy looks faster now than he did before," Amukamara said. "I was just looking at him and was like, 'Man, how is this possible?'" Of course, Amukamara is Cruz's teammate and friend, and he's also a very optimistic guy. We're still passing on Cruz in fantasy drafts as he comes off a devastating patellar tear. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:50 am

  • Terrance West fell down depth chart at OTAs
Terrance West appeared to surrender reps to Duke Johnson and Shaun Draughn during OTAs and minicamp.

Advice: The Browns have said they want to ride the hot hand at running back this season. It's going to be very difficult for West to get that hot hand if he's fourth in line behind Isaiah Crowell, Johnson and Draughn. West had a rocky rookie year, often looking average on the field and getting in the coaches' doghouse off it. The Browns used a third-round pick on Johnson in May. Rotoworld.com Today, 5:16 am

  • Anti-domestic violence group is pro-Ray Rice
The co-founders of an anti-domestic violence group say free agent Ray Rice deserves another chance.

Advice: The pendulum of public opinion is starting to swing back in Rice's favor. "We have been around a lot of abusive men, but our experience with Ray has been tremendously positive," said Tony Porter of A CALL TO MEN. "We feel strongly about him having the opportunity of having a second chance. He's deserving of it." The problem is Rice's on-field ceiling isn't high enough to offset the public relations headache. ESPN's Adam Schefter says multiple teams have privately discussed bringing in Rice. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 5:31 am

  • Report: Unnamed team almost signed Ray Rice
According to ESPN Ravens reporter Jamison Hensley, one unnamed NFL team "seriously considered" signing free agent Ray Rice earlier this offseason, before ownership stepped in to nix the deal.

Advice: The owner of the undisclosed team had "concerns about public reaction to signing (Rice) given the taped incident" of domestic violence. Although that deal fell through, it's an indication that teams are indeed giving Rice consideration, even if they aren't being widely reported amongst the media. Currently training in Connecticut, Rice sounds willing to play for a minimum NFL salary. Rotoworld.com Friday, 12:59 pm

  • Ray Rice calling NFL teams, looking for shot
ESPN's Ed Werder reports free agent Ray Rice "and supporters" have been calling NFL teams in hopes of Rice getting another shot.

Advice: Among the supporters is ex-Bucs coach Greg Schiano. Schiano is a running joke in media and fan circles, but has a tight bond with coaches around the NFL, including Bill Belichick. Rice is still only 28 years old, and could add value to a backfield in a passing-down role, or even return as a lead runner in the right situation. We're going to guess he gets another shot at some point in camp. Rotoworld.com Friday, 10:58 am

  • Vikings, FS Smith not talking extension
The Vikings have no plans to extend FS Harrison Smith's contract this year.

Advice: Smith is under contract the next two seasons for a little under $7 million total after the Vikings exercised his 2016 fifth-year team option. Smith is coming off a breakout season that saw him grade out as Pro Football Focus' No. 2 overall safety in his first year under coach Mike Zimmer. Smith turned 26 in February.
