  • Rishard Matthews getting slot work for Titans
Rishard Matthews has been seeing increased reps in the slot with Kendall Wright (hamstring) still sidelined.

Advice: "We are going to move him inside a little bit, give him a little more playing time in there with Kendall being out. So he has a little more on his plate," coach Mike Mularkey said. "I am really happy with Rishard. ... His blocking has been very good." Matthews is playing inside and out and figures to play heavy snaps right out of the gate. He and Tajae Sharpe appear to be the top-two receivers, followed up by Andre Johnson and Harry Douglas. Wright may not have a role upon return. Rotoworld.com 41 minutes ago

  • Ebron '50-50' to play in Week 1?
The Detroit Free Press' Dave Birkett believes Eric Ebron (ankle) is "50-50" to play in Week 1.

Advice: Birkett did acknowledge his optimism grew when Ebron spoke to reporters recently. Many times, players who are in danger of missing significant time will be kept under wraps by teams and are discouraged from talking to the media. After missing so much of training camp, a slow start should be expected for Ebron. Rotoworld.com Today, 7:07 am

  • Kaepernick universally-hated in front offices
After speaking with seven anonymous NFL front office members, Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman came away with the opinion that teams "truly, truly hate" Colin Kaepernick, and he may never play another down in the league.

Advice: "I don't want him anywhere near my team," one front office executive said. "He's a traitor." Another team executive said, "He has no respect for our country. [Expletive] that guy." And according to one GM, "In my career, I have never seen a guy so hated by front office guys as Kaepernick." One executive said he'd rather resign than sign Kap. Freeman believes '90-95 percent' of teams feel this way, and he thinks it's possible Kap will be blackballed once/if he's cut by the 49ers. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:35 am

Patriots signed ST/WR Matthew Slater to a one-year, $1.8 million extension through 2017.

Advice: The deal includes a $600,000 signing bonus and $900,000 fully guaranteed. Slater played a total of 24 snaps on offense last season, with no more than four coming in a single game, but he's one of the elite special teams aces in the league. He's made five Pro Bowls for it. • Vikes don't think QB Hill will last 16 games
Appearing on NFL Network's Good Morning Football, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Matt Vensel reports the Vikings don't think they can "get by" with Shaun Hill for 16 games.

Advice: Vensel believes the Vikings will look outside the organization for another quarterback, though he does report the team "likes" Taylor Heinicke, but Heinicke is on the NFI list after tearing up his foot in an off-field incident. He's not expected to be able to practice for another three weeks. The Vikings were one of the teams linked to Nick Foles before he signed with the Chiefs. It's possible they could try to pry Josh McCown away from the Browns for a mid-rounder. Rotoworld.com Today, 6:14 am

  • Shaun Hill positioned to be Vikings starter
Shaun Hill will open the season as the Vikings' starting quarterback.

Advice: He should be grabbed in two-quarterback leagues, but nowhere else. 36 1/2 years old, Hill will spend much of his time under center executing handoffs to Adrian Peterson. Hill appeared in nine games (eight starts) with the 2014 Rams, completing 63.3 percent of his throws with an 8:7 TD-to-INT ratio and 7.2 YPA. The Vikings should be willing to take those rate stats and run with them if Hill can repeat. We wouldn't bet on Hill lasting 16 starts this year. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 7:23 pm

Redskins placed RB Keith Marshall on injured reserve with a damaged UCL in his elbow, ending his season.

Advice: Marshall was given a three-week timeline upon going down, but either his prognosis got worse, or the Redskins used his injury as an opportunity to free up a roster spot. Marshall was a hyped seventh-rounder out of Georgia, but didn't make nearly as much noise once the pads went on. • 49ers could 'put Kaepernick on ice' for 2016?
MMQB's Albert Breer believes there's a "realistic possibility" the 49ers put Colin Kaepernick "on ice" for all of the 2016 season.

Advice: In doing so, the 49ers would protect themselves from Kaepernick potentially injuring himself, which would then result in Kap unlocking more guaranteed money in his contract if he suffers a severe injury. It would also mean Kaepernick wouldn't dress on game days, which wouldn't allow him to visibly protest anymore National Anthems. The Niners can save $16.9 million against the cap next offseason by designating Kap as a post-June 1 cut. In the "icing" scenario, rookie Jeff Driskel would likely serve as Blaine Gabbert's backup to open the year. Rotoworld.com Monday, 5:01 pm

Advice: Marshall is only supposed to be sidelined three weeks, so it would be a drastic move. Of course, Marshall could be the player the Redskins stash to activate later. Advice: They also sent RB Glenn Winston (shoulder) and DL Nile Lawrence-Stample (shoulder) to injured reserve. Cleveland has one more move to make before tomorrow's deadline. Davis was an expected cut, but it is a reminder the team ridiculously gave him a three-year contract with a $500,000 signing bonus and $600,000 guaranteed last September. • 49ers could save space from Kap's release
Even though Colin Kaepernick's $11.9 million salary is fully guaranteed, the 49ers could save salary cap space by releasing him if Kaepernick signed with another team.

Advice: As Profootballtalk's Mike Florio notes, the salary which Kaepernick would receive from the signing team would come off of San Francisco's cap. This at least gives them some incentive and excuse for parting ways with Kaepernick that isn't related to his sitting during the National Anthem. Advice: Glazer said he would be "shocked" if Kaepernick lasted the entire season on the 49ers' 53, and suggested Kap "may not even be on (the roster) in the next two weeks." All of Kaepernick's $11.9 million salary is guaranteed, but he has created a toxic situation by refusing to stand for pre-game National Anthems, which is Kaepernick's right but is frowned upon to put it mildly by most observers. • Kaepernick promises, 'I will continue to sit'
Colin Kaepernick told reporters Sunday that he will "continue to sit" during pre-game National Anthems.

Advice: This assumes Kaepernick is on an NFL roster this season, and attending games at all. While it is certainly within his rights to sit when the National Anthem is played, it has caused a P.R. nightmare in San Francisco and will remain one for as long as Kaepernick is showing up on Sundays. Other teams likely now view him as toxic. It's no secret Kaepernick is disliked by teammates, even prior to the National Anthem thing. • Rishard does not see much work Saturday
Rishard Matthews caught 1-of-2 targets for 19 yards in the Titans' third preseason game Saturday night.

Advice: Matthews' one grab was good for a first down on 3rd-and-10 late in the first quarter, and he had an end-zone target bounce off his fingertips in the second. Still, he saw inconsistent work with the first-team offense, often times losing snaps to both Harry Douglas and Andre Johnson. It is possible Tennessee just wanted to get the vets work with the first-team offense, but it is a concerning development with Tajae Sharpe seemingly establishing himself as the No. 1 receiver. Advice: The 49ers also paid Kaepernick a $400,000 offseason workout bonus. The Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn has made a convincing case on Twitter that Kaepernick's release may be inevitable, but it would be a costly move for the 49ers. • Colin Kaepernick sits during national anthem
Colin Kaepernick sat during the national anthem before Friday night's preseason game.

Advice: This is a non-story, but it is something the 49ers could use against Kap if they decide to move on. "The national anthem is and always will be a special part of the pre-game ceremony," the team said in a statement to Pro Football Talk. "In respecting such American principles as freedom of religion and freedom of expression, we recognize the right of an individual to choose to participate, or not, in our celebration of the national anthem." In response to the "controversy," Kaepernick told NFL Network's Steve Wyche he is "not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color." Advice: Kaepernick was downright dreadful in Friday night's preseason game, looking entirely uncomfortable in new coach Chip Kelly's offense. If the 49ers aren't going to start Kaepernick, they have three options -- trade him, pay him $12 million not to play, or grant Kaepernick his release.
