Pros vs Joes (ID# 239620)
  • Jay Gruden talks up Jordan Reed
Redskins coach Jay Gruden "(feels) a difference" with Jordan Reed this summer.

Advice: Reed is finally 100 percent healthy, and Gruden believes he has "more confidence in his strength in regards to his blocking." Reed's pass-catching upside is through the roof, but he left something to be desired as a blocker last season. The return of Niles Paul has also dented Reed's 2015 fantasy appeal. Yesterday, 11:56 am

  • Troy Niklas comes off the active/NFI list
Cardinals activated TE Troy Niklas (ankle, hamstring) from the active/NFI list.

Advice: Niklas was recovering from a June ankle scope. His practice reps should remain limited for the foreseeable future, while he may not be ready for the first preseason game. Yesterday, 10:26 am

  • Cardinals activate TE Jermaine Gresham (back)
Cardinals activated TE Jermaine Gresham from the active/PUP list.

Advice: Despite the activation, Gresham will still be eased into camp. The one-time TE2 will be off the fantasy radar this season. Yesterday, 10:24 am

  • Steelers cut Michael Egnew
    Steelers waived TE Michael Egnew.

Advice: The notorious Jeff Ireland draft bust is running out of NFL chances. Sunday, 10:18 am

  • Maxx Williams impressing early in Ravens camp
Maxx Williams has shown good route running at training camp.

Advice: Williams struggled with OC Marc Trestman's scheme and his protections during OTAs. There aren’t high expectations for him as a rookie, but it would be a disappointment if he didn’t beat out Crockett Gillmore. Dennis Pitta (hip) is expected to open the year on reserve/PUP. • Giants waive/injured UDFA TE Matt LaCosse
    Giants waived/injured TE Matt LaCosse.

Advice: LaCosse suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of training camp. He was competing with Adrien Robinson, Jerome Cunningham, and Will Tye for the No. 3 tight end job. A developmental move tight end, LaCosse ran 4.64 at the Illinois Pro Day with 20 bench-press reps. He'll spend 2015 on I.R. Saturday, 12:35 pm

  • Andrew Quarless reports to Packers' camp
Packers TE Andrew Quarless reported for training camp on Saturday.

Advice: Quarless was arrested for a gun offense in Florida on July 4, but his early absence from camp reportedly involved a family issue. He is the favorite to open the season as the Packers' in-line tight end. Saturday, 6:22 am

  • Saints TE Orson Charles suspended one game
NFL suspended Saints TE Orson Charles one game for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

Advice: Charles was arrested last April for a road rage incident. He won't count against the Week 1 roster if he makes the team. 24-year-old Charles is competing for a role behind Josh Hill and Ben Watson. Friday, 2:24 pm

  • Vernon Davis feeling faster, more explosive
Vernon Davis said he feels "faster, more explosive" than he did last season.

Advice: "Right now, I feel like a rookie," Davis said, "been taking care of myself." Davis blames his struggles on a number of factors, including coaching and the players. He's since fired a financial advisor who talked him into holding out for more money last offseason. Now 31 and coming off the worst season of his career, Davis has a chance to bounce back as a seam-stretcher and red-zone threat. Friday, 9:58 am

  • Martellus Bennett reports to training camp
Martellus Bennett reported for the start of Bears training camp.

Advice: Bennett sat out all of OTAs and minicamp. He wants a new contract, but has two years remaining on his current four-year deal and seems to have conceded more money won't be coming his way this year. "I'll do what I did last season," he said, "and it will address itself." Bennett set career-highs in catches (90), yards (916) and touchdowns (six) last year and remains a mid-to-high TE1. • Antonio Gates maintains accidental PED use
Suspended Chargers TE Antonio Gates maintains he doesn't know how a banned substance got into his system.

Advice: "I was in shock," Gates said, adding he believed he'd win his appeal. As it is, Gates said the failed test was a "blip on the radar." Contract-year TE Ladarius Green gets a four-game audition to replace Gates during his ban. Now 35, Gates is also in a contract year. Thursday, 11:51 am

  • Andrew Quarless yet to report to camp
Updating an earlier item, Packers TE Andrew Quarless has yet to report to training camp.

Advice: "Andrew Quarless is dealing with an extremely difficult family situation right now," coach Mike McCarthy said Thursday. "He will be gone as long as he has to be." McCarthy's words suggest Quarless' issue isn't related to his July 4 gun arrest. It's unclear when the Packers' in-line tight end will report. Thursday, 11:43 am

  • Bengals TE Eifert declares self 100% healthy
Tyler Eifert declared himself 100 percent on the first day of Bengals camp.

Advice: He indeed avoided active/PUP and should be all systems go after suffering a year-ending elbow injury in Week 1 last season, and undergoing a shoulder surgery while he was on the shelf. The 21st overall pick in the 2013 draft, Eifert conceded he hasn't felt 100 percent since 2014 OTAs. Eifert offers some breakout potential and is priced reasonably in most forms of fantasy. Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    7.24 (162nd)
  • Jordan Reed's procedure was stem cell
Jordan Reed said the procedure he underwent on his knee in May was a stem cell shot.

Advice: It was assumed that Reed did a scope on his knee after experiencing soreness during OTAs. The fact that he went the stem cell route is encouraging and lends some hope that he can sustain health. When Reed is on the field and feeling good, he's a matchup nightmare for defenses. It's worth tracking his battle with Niles Paul at camp. Thursday, 9:18 am
Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    7.35 (165th)
  • Less tight end receptions under OC Haley
The passing-game role of the Steelers' tight ends has dwindled under OC Todd Haley.

Advice: It doesn't help that the Steelers simply lack a dynamic receiver at the position. Heath Miller finished 2014 as a top-12 fantasy scorer, but only had three TDs and rarely helped owners win fantasy weeks. Each of Pittsburgh's top two tight ends -- Miller and Matt Spaeth -- finished 2014 as top-seven run blockers at Pro Football Focus. Expect another humdrum season from Miller. Thursday, 8:17 am
Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    10.35 (101st)
  • Chargers high on Ladarius Green
Chargers OC Frank Reich says he would be "shocked" if TE Ladarius Green "didn't have his most productive year."

Advice: Green will get every opportunity to earn an increased role in training camp and the first four games of the season, when Antonio Gates will be serving a month-long suspension. It's worth noting Reich made this statement before Gates' ban was announced. Still only 25 years old, Green should be on the TE1 radar in the first four games. His role thereafter is up in the air. • Cardinals place Troy Niklas on active/PUP
Cardinals placed TE Troy Niklas (ankle, hamstring) on active/PUP.

Advice: Niklas is a reserve/PUP candidate after undergoing June ankle surgery. He was listed on the Cardinals' active/PUP list with a hamstring injury, however. Niklas was a non-factor as a rookie, primarily due to injuries, appearing in only seven games. We don't have high hopes for him in Dynasty leagues. Wednesday, 2:43 pm
Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    5.18 (209th)
  • Jordan Reed (knee) full-go for Redskins camp
Jordan Reed (knee) has been fully cleared for the start of training camp.

Advice: The Redskins held Reed out of OTAs and minicamp following a clean-up on his knee. Coming off a zero-touchdown season, it will be interesting to see whether the Redskins make Reed fight to keep his first-string job. They re-signed Niles Paul to a three-year, $6 million contract in the offseason. The current front office and coaching staff did not bring Reed to Washington. Wednesday, 2:05 pm

  • Jermaine Gresham opens camp on active/PUP
Cardinals placed TE Jermaine Gresham (back) on the active/PUP list.

Advice: Gresham just signed last week, but is still recovering from offseason back surgery. He projects to start at Y-tight end when healthy. The Cardinals also placed TE Troy Niklas on active/NFI. Wednesday, 1:52 pm
Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    3.71 (266th)
  • Titans bring back TE Chase Coffman
    Titans re-signed TE Chase Coffman.

Advice: Coffman appeared in 13 games (three starts) with Tennessee last year. He'll provide depth after the release of Taylor Thompson. Coffman is a catch-first tight end, but a slow and plodding one. Wednesday, 1:29 pm

  • Chiefs place Demetrius Harris on active/PUP
Chiefs placed TE Demetrius Harris (foot) on active/PUP.

Advice: Harris may be a candidate for reserve/PUP following two foot surgeries over the last eight months. When healthy, the converted basketball player will compete for the No. 2 tight end role behind Travis Kelce in Kansas City. Wednesday, 9:58 am
Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    1.69 (2318th)
  • Andrew Quarless reports to camp on time
Packers TE Andrew Quarless reported to training camp on time following his early-July arrest for allegedly firing a gun twice in Miami.

Advice: Coach Mike McCarthy had a "long conversation" with Quarless, and admitted both sides were "disappointed" in Quarless' actions. Still, the Packers appear to have no intention of cutting Quarless, who remains on track to start at in-line tight end while Richard Rodgers operates as the lightly-used flex player. • Saints writer throws 'cold water' on Josh Hill
ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett threw "cold water" on Josh Hill's "fantasy buzz" Wednesday, saying Hill won't be playing the old "Jimmy Graham role."

Advice: Coach Sean Payton has professed his love for Hill numerous times this offseason, but Triplett believes that's because Hill is simply a good football player with the ability to run, catch, block and contribute on special teams. He notes that before Graham was a Saint, Payton didn't feature the tight end as much. Triplett mentioned Jeremy Shockey's 48-569-3 receiving line in 2009 as "realistic" for Hill. The truth is much of Hill's past success came because he was left wide open. Wednesday, 9:23 am

  • Jets to use second-year TE Amaro at H-back
The Jets will use second-year TE Jace Amaro as an H-back.

Advice: Jeff Cumberland projects to fill in as the traditional inline tight end. Amaro has the athleticism to move around the formation and make plays with the ball in his hands. But he'll need to show in camp that he's corrected his drops issue that plagued him as a rookie. If so, Amaro has a chance to catch 50-60 passes in OC Chan Gailey's spread. Amaro hurt his back at OTAs and missed minicamp. Wednesday, 6:04 am

    6.93 (169th)
  • Maxx Williams started slow at spring practice
Ravens second-round pick Maxx Williams "didn't get off to the fastest start" at spring practices.

Advice: Williams admitted to struggling to digest OC Marc Trestman's playbook, and the Baltimore Sun is projecting Crockett Gillmore as the Ravens' Week 1 starter at tight end. The Sun writes the Ravens "might need to temper expectations" for Williams in his first year. Fantasy owners should heed this advice. Tuesday, 4:54 pm
Week 1 Projected Points & Rank
    7.18 (159th)
  • Saints TE Kevin Brock
Saints signed TE Kevin Brock, formerly of the Bengals.

Advice: 29-year-old Brock is a blocking tight end with some special teams value. He was apparently the Saints' fallback option after whiffing on Jermaine Gresham. Monday, 2:06 pm

    0.35 (2464th)
  • Martellus headed for last season in Chicago?
ESPN's Jeff Dickerson believes this could be Martellus Bennett's final season in Chicago.

Advice: Bennett led all tight ends with 90 catches last season, but is unhappy with his contract. He's promised to report for training camp, but is headed into his age-28 season. He's due an eminently reasonable $5.085 million in 2016, but the Bears may decide to move on if they don't believe Bennett is worthy of an extension. Bennett's unique personality hasn't always endeared him to coaching staffs the way it does fans. Monday, 10:26 am

    11.70 (73rd)
  • Jags' offense will feature plenty of '12'
The Jaguars' offense will feature several two-tight end formations.

Advice: OC Greg Olson has no intention of putting Julius Thomas in a three-point stance and asking him to hold the edge. That's Marcedes Lewis' job. Olson will instead play to Thomas' strengths, splitting him off the formation to supplement an inexperienced wideout group. Still, Thomas' seventh-round ADP is steep for a player who's put up most of his career stats via red-zone looks from Peyton Manning. Monday, 4:24 am

  • Larry Donnell out of his walking boot
Larry Donnell has shed his walking boot after dealing with Achilles' tendinitis this spring.

Advice: He's resumed training in Alabama and is expected to be a full-go when the Giants open training camp this week. Per beat writer Jordan Raanan, Donnell's Achilles' injury stems from college, which may be concerning in that it has never gone away. In his first year as an NFL starter, Donnell ranked as the fantasy TE12, catching six touchdown passes but finishing the season slow. Jul 26, 1:31 pm

  • Anthony Denham coming off 'great offseason'
Texans second-year TE Anthony Denham reportedly "had a great offseason."

Advice: Denham was called up from the practice squad last December but never appeared in a game. Denham's strong offseason could land him on the 53-man roster, but he won't be an impact player. The Texans could use a difference maker at tight end. Houston tight ends combined for just 32 catches last year. Jul 26, 8:46 am

  • Raiders TE Clive Walford expected to start
ESPN Raiders reporter Bill Williamson expects rookie Clive Walford to win the starting tight end job.

Advice: Walford reportedly outplayed Mychal Rivera in OTAs. He has a chance for heavy snaps as a rookie, but will be mostly asked to block as the inline starter. Walford isn't on the re-draft fantasy radar. Jul 25, 3:46 pm
