  • Stephen Hill carted off with leg injury
Stephen Hill was carted off with a right leg injury at Panthers camp.

Advice: The early indications are it's a serious injury. Hill reportedly had a strong offseason after spending last year on the practice squad. Kelvin Benjamin, Devin Funchess, Corey Brown, Ted Ginn and Jerricho Cotchery are Carolina's top five receivers. Rotoworld.com 49 minutes ago

  • Jaguars not concerned with Yeldon's blocking
Jaguars coach Gus Bradley doesn’t expect pass protection to be an issue for rookie T.J. Yeldon.

Advice: Yeldon is locked into early-down work, and has potential to start the year as a thee-down back. "He’s got really good instincts," Bradley said. "He’s got some work to do on protections, but it’s not [a problem of] picking it up in the classroom. He’s very sharp. Just needs reps on it." Rotoworld.com Today, 2:09 pm

Storm Johnson (illness) expects to return to practice next week.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley said he hasn’t had any contact with suspended WR Justin Blackmon.

Advice: Multiple offseason reports suggest Blackmon was denied reinstatement by the NFL. Blackmon is currently set to miss an unprecedented 40 games on indefinite suspension. An elite on-field talent, Blackmon’s career has been derailed by multiple Stage 3 violations. The Florida Times-Union believes it’s "uncertain" if Blackmon will return in 2016. • Melvin Gordon struggling with pass protection
U-T San Diego's Kevin Acee said rookie RB Melvin Gordon is struggling with pass protection in Chargers' camp.

Advice: Most rookies struggle in pass protection, but Gordon's issues are compounded by his lack of experience as a receiver. With Danny Woodhead on the roster, there is little reason for the Chargers to put Gordon in passing situations in which he is unlikely to succeed. Gordon should get the majority of the early-down work for San Diego, but he is unlikely to be heavily involved in the passing game this season. Rotoworld.com Today, 10:10 am

Browns RB Terrance West suffered a calf injury in Saturday's practice.

Advice: It was a tough practice for Cleveland as they lost DL Billy Winn to what looked like a bad knee injury and fellow RB Duke Johnson to a tweaked hamstring. West said he was not worried about the injury, but he may miss a few days. West is competing with Isiah Crowell for the early-down work in the Browns' backfield. Rotoworld.com Today, 9:12 am

Browns rookie RB Duke Johnson tweaked his hamstring during practice Saturday.

Sophomore RB James White worked with the first team as the third-down back in Patriots' camp.

Advice: CSN New England's Tom Curran said it "seems" the Patriots are going to give White the first crack to earn the third-down job vacated by Shane Vereen. Even if White wins the competition, he will likely cede touches to Travaris Cadet, Dion Lewis or Brandon Bolden at times during the season. • Lance Dunbar will be involved in the offense
ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer said RB Lance Dunbar "will finally become a viable part of the offense."

Advice: An explosive back with Shane Vereenian skills, Dunbar has the passing-game chops to form a dynamic partnership with presumed starter Joseph Randle. With Darren McFadden already sidelined by injuries, Dunbar could end up with the second most snaps in the Cowboys' backfield. He is an interesting flier in deeper PPR leagues. • Cowboys offense 'not going to change'
Cowboys OC Scott Linehan said the team's run-heavy strategy is "not going to change" despite the departure of DeMarco Murray.

Advice: Dallas successfully used a high-volume rushing attack to hide their deficiencies on defense and Tony Romo's ailing back last season. Romo is as healthy as he as been in several years, but the defense is still suspect and the Cowboys still have one of the best lines in the league. The issue for Linehan is at the running back position, where he is saddled with unproven talents like Joseph Randle or washed-up veterans like Darren McFadden. If Randle can prove his flashes last season are sustainable, he could allow the Cowboys to continue their ground-and-pound success from a year ago and turn into a fantasy monster in the process. If he cannot handle the workload, however, Dallas may have to find a new offensive identity on the fly. Rotoworld.com Today, 3:16 am

Coach Jeff Fisher said Friday the Rams are "very, very encouraged" with Todd Gurley's (ACL) recovery, but acknowledged Gurley is "not 100 percent" or ready to play in football games.

Advice: "Todd did a great job on the conditioning test," Fisher said. "He's not 100 percent. He's not ready to play in a game right now. ... We'll just kind of add things as we move forward." • Jets rookie WR Devin Smith has fractured ribs
Second-round WR Devin Smith suffered broken ribs in the first practice of Jets camp and may miss all of the preseason.

Advice: Smith has been hospitalized with the painful injury. It should be emphasized that Smith broke multiple ribs, not just one. The injury occurred while Smith was "making a leaping catch" in Friday's practice. The 37th pick in this year's draft, Smith was going to compete for third receiver duties with Jeremy Kerley behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. While we didn't have high hopes for Smith's re-draft league prospects, so much lost practice time in OC Chan Gailey's system may prevent Smith from making any meaningful early-season impact. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport confirms the Cowboys' No. 1 running back job is "Joseph Randle's to lose."

Advice: Per RapSheet, the Cowboys expect "big things" from Randle, and love his "vision and explosiveness." After struggling mightily as a fifth-round rookie in 2013, Randle indeed showed improved burst as a sophomore, averaging nearly seven yards on 51 carries. Randle remains a high-risk fantasy investment based on his extremely-limited track record. His ADP is creeping toward round three. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 6:33 pm

But at the very least, West getting the first rep on the first day of camp shows he's not buried on the depth chart as previously speculated. I don't want to say too much because he's got to do it. But I'm just very excited about him, like off-the-charts excited." • Jerry endorses Joseph Randle as 'No. 1 back'
At the beginning of Cowboys camp Wednesday, owner Jerry Jones endorsed Joseph Randle as Dallas' "No. 1 back."

Advice: Specifically, Jones "expressed confidence" that Randle can handle the load as Dallas' lead runner. The Cowboys are expected to mix in washed-up Darren McFadden and scatback Lance Dunbar, but Randle is in position to open the season as the starter. A fifth-round pick in the 2013 draft, Randle is a questionable talent, albeit one poised to run behind the NFL's premier offensive line. Advice: It means Gurley is ineligible for the reserve/NFI list, which would have cost him the first six games of the season. It's a major surprise after the Rams insisted all offseason they would take things slow with the No. 10 overall pick. It's going to be very difficult for West to get that hot hand if he's fourth in line behind Isaiah Crowell, Johnson and Draughn.
