  • Broncos GM: Courtland Sutton ‘in a good place’
    Broncos GM George Paton believes Courtland Sutton is “in a good place” despite his absence from voluntary OTAs.

    Advice: With his contract situation in limbo — Sutton is guaranteed only $2 million for 2024 — the veteran wideout is opting out of “voluntary” practice. Paton has opted for diplomacy instead of irritation. “It’s the first week of the offseason program. (Coach Sean Payton has) talked to Courtland. I’ve talked to Courtland. He’s in a good place and we’ll just leave it at that.” It is very much up in the air whether Sutton will return to the Mile High City for 2024, but the matter could be settled during next week’s draft.   • Chargers GM: Dobbins ‘should be’ ready for camp
    Chargers GM Joe Hortiz believes newly-signed RB J.K. Dobbins (Achilles) “should be” ready for training camp.

    Advice: “Should” is doing a lot of work here, especially since Dobbins’ 2023 injury is only one of multiple traumatic lower-body issues suffered during his four-year NFL career. Hortiz also admitted the obvious that Dobbins’ signing should not affect the Chargers’ odds of selecting a back in the draft. “You don’t want to turn away from a good player because you’ve signed someone.” At least in terms of fantasy, Dobbins is squarely in the realm of “any 2024 contributions will be a bonus.” Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:55 pm

  • Jaguars still working on extension with Lawrence
    Jaguars GM Trent Baalke said the team is still working toward a contract extension with Trevor Lawrence.

    Advice: Baalke said the team is trying “not to force anything” but acknowledged that he spoke recently with Lawrence’s agent. Lawrence is heading into the fourth year of his rookie deal and will presumably have his fifth year exercised later this offseason. Lawrence has thrown for 11,770-58-39 through his first three seasons in the league, going 20-30 in his first 50 starts and 17-16 in a post-Urban Meyer world. He led the Jaguars to the playoffs in 2022 and led them to an inspiring comeback win over the Chargers in his first playoff game. It seems apparent at this point that both sides hope to get a deal done but with essentially two years left on his rookie contract, it’s no surprise that neither is rushing to get a deal done.   • Zay Flowers won’t face discipline from league
    The NFL announced Ravens WR Zay Flowers will not face league discipline after determining there was insufficient evidence to support Flowers’ involvement in anything that violated the league’s personal conduct policy.

    Advice: Flowers is eligible to participate in all team activities. The second-year receiver was temporarily under investigation for his alleged involvement in a domestic assault incident, but that investigation was ultimately suspended by the Baltimore County Police, and Flowers was never charged with anything. Flowers is coming off a rookie season in which he totaled 77 receptions for 858 yards and five touchdowns and is expected to take a significant leap forward in 2024. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:48 pm

  • No deadline for Waller on retirement decision
    Giants GM Joe Schoen said the team hasn’t given Darren Waller a timeline to make a decision on whether or not he will retire.

    Advice: It was reported in early March that Waller was considering retirement. A month and a half later, that still appears to be the case, and the Giants are in no hurry to get a decision from the veteran tight end. Schoen said the team is “giving him time and space to make a decision on what he wants to do” and didn’t have much else to say regarding the situation. Waller has battled numerous nagging injuries in recent years and appeared in just 12 games last season due to a hamstring injury. Waller was still serviceable when available, totaling 52-552-1 in those games while totaling 70-plus yards in three of his first eight contests. Waller will turn 32 shortly after the season begins. Clearly, on the back nine of his career, even if he does opt to play in 2024, he’s a long way off from being the player we saw in 2019 and 2020. Rotoworld Yesterday, 12:38 pm

  • Nick Chubb (knee) has resumed running
    Browns GM Andrew Berry said Nick Chubb (knee) started running last week.

    Advice: As Berry stated, Chubb running is “not to say that he’s through the woods or anything, but he’s doing everything in his power [to return].” Everything remains wait-and-see with Chubb, who suffered a devastating knee injury in last season’s Week 2 contest against the Steelers. It was the second time Chubb was dealt a serious injury to that knee, with the previous injury coming during his college days at Georgia. Berry said Chubb has attacked his rehab “very aggressively,” but we likely won’t know much about his early-season availability until we get closer to training camp. Rotoworld Yesterday, 11:52 am

  • Berry: Watson (shoulder) ‘in a pretty good spot’
    Browns GM Andrew Berry said Deshaun Watson is “in a pretty good spot” with his recovery from shoulder surgery.

    Advice: Berry said Watson has been throwing passes up to 40 yards and is “progressing as appropriate.” The team isn’t ready to guarantee Watson will be ready to go come Week 1 — despite him asserting he would be ready at that time — but every offseason report concerning his shoulder has been positive thus far. Berry’s comments echo what head coach Kevin Stefanski said earlier in the week regarding Watson’s shoulder, as both have expressed confidence in the plan the team has in place to get him on the field in time for the start of the season.   • Making 40-yard throws
    Browns general manager Andrew Berry said Thursday that Watson (shoulder) has been making throws of up to 40 yards, Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports.

    Advice: While not quite willing to guarantee that Watson will be ready for the regular-season opener, Berry did confirm that's the expectation and said the Browns are "pretty optimistic" about the QB's rehab process so far. Watson spoke with reporters Tuesday, mentioning that the team medical staff favors a cautious approach that would see him wait until training camp before returning to full practice participation. The 28-year-old thus figures to be limited during OTAs, giving free-agent additions Jameis Winston and Tyler Huntley more chances to throw to the team's top receivers. The Browns traded for WR Jerry Jeudy in March and still have WRs Amari Cooper and Elijah Moore as well as TE David Njoku. There's also a strong chance of improved blocking this season, after 2023 saw the Browns lose their top three OTs to season-ending knee injuries. Watson is the biggest variable though, perhaps more so because of his disappointing 2022-23 performance than the ongoing rehab from Nov. 21 surgery to repair a displaced glenoid fracture in his right shoulder.   • Running on land again
    Chubb (knee) resumed running on land within the last week, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.

    Advice: Chubb took his rehab to the next level shortly after agreeing last Thursday to a contract alteration that converted a large portion of his scheduled $11.75 million base salary into incentives. He's entering the final season of a three-year extension and still faces a long path to complete his rehab from surgeries in September and November to address ACL, MCL and meniscus injuries in his left knee. It's the same knee in which he suffered a major injury Oct. 2015 -- his sophomore season at Georgia -- and he later had an MCL sprain in the knee Oct. 2020. The Browns hope the 28-year-old is ready for Week 1, but they're also preparing for the possibility of missed time, having added RBs D'Onta Foreman and Nyheim Hines (knee) to a roster that still has Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong.
