  • Le'Veon doesn't travel for 3rd preseason game
Following Wednesday's marijuana and DUI arrest, Le'Veon Bell did not travel with the Steelers for Thursday night's third preseason game at Philadelphia.

Advice: LeGarrette Blount did make the trip after being arrested as well. There could be some significance to this, but we're not adjusting our rankings yet, and may not at any point. The NFL tends to take a long time to hand down discipline, and Bell has no history of violating league policy. He was considered a high-character prospect coming out of Michigan State in the 2013 draft. It's entirely possible Bell will be available for the entire 2014 season with no adjustment to his role. • Colts GM on TRich: 'Needs to answer the bell'
Colts GM Ryan Grigson says Trent Richardson "needs to answer the bell" and be "accountable."

Advice: Richardson gained eight yards on his first preseason carry, and has 26 yards on his last 13. "Trent, he needs to answer the bell and do his job to the best of his ability," said Grigson. "We're all accountable here. ... He's such a hard runner, we know how tough he is, but he's got to produce just like all these guys do on this final 53." If this was an outward expression of disappointment from Grigson, it'd be a first from the Colts' organization, which has propped up T-Rich at every opportunity since trading for him last September. Richardson's ADP has finally begun to dip. He's going late in the fifth round of standard drafts. Rotoworld.com

"He's a big part of what we're doing here," coach Bill O'Brien said. The No. 12 overall fantasy receiver a year ago, Johnson's ADP has dropped into the late fourth round. LeGarrette Blount and Le'Veon Bell were arrested for possession of marijuana Wednesday.

Advice: Bell was also popped for DUI. The two Steelers were reportedly in possession of 20 grams of marijuana and accompanied by a female, who was in possession of two grams. Advice: Bell and Blount allegedly had 20 grams of pot and were accompanied by a female, who was in possession of two grams. All three were said to be "cooperative," and admitted to the crimes. While this obviously isn't good news, it may have no affect on Bell or Blount's status for the 2014 season. Bell had zero off-field concerns coming out of Michigan State. Advice: Norman's had big summers since he was drafted, but he's never translated them to games. "This year he's had the kind of camp you get excited about," Rivera said. Having Norman finally flip the switch would be a boost to Carolina's defense. He's gifted at 6'0/195, but lets his emotions and stubbornness get the best of him at times. Lions DT Nick Fairley said his "eating habits have gotten in the way the past couple weeks," and he's now up to 315 pounds.

Advice: This explains why Fairley is running with the second-team defense, instead of next to Ndamukong Suh with the starters. Fairley wants to play at 305. In fairness to Fairley, the Lions have been all over the map with where they want his playing weight. Earlier in the year, he was too light, but now he's too heavy. • Torrey Smith anticipates more versatile role
Torrey Smith is anticipating a more versatile role this season.

Advice: The hiring of Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator will be a boon to Smith's box scores. Used too often as a one-trick deep threat through his first three NFL seasons, the speedster's new role "incorporates his ability to run deep routes as well as short to intermediate patterns." Much like the Shanahan & Son offense, the Gary Kubiak scheme is ridiculously friendly to X receivers -- as we saw with Andre Johnson in Houston and 2013 NFL target leader Pierre Garcon in Washington last season. Smith is playing that spot now, is in a contract year and is one of our favorite value-pick wideout targets. He's currently lasting until the sixth round. Rotoworld.com

Advice: Barner added 15 pounds during the offseason, but still couldn't become adequate as a pass blocker. If he sticks with the Eagles, it will be largely due to his ability to contribute in the return game. Barner fell behind Fozzy Whittaker in Carolina and was going to get cut. Advice: That was up from the three first-team reps Bortles took on Monday. The Jags are slowly bringing the No. 3 overall pick along while quietly avoiding the quarterback competition that went down in Cleveland. Through two preseason games, Bortles is 18-of-28 for 277 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions, good for a 96.9 passer rating. The Browns named Brian Hoyer their Week 1 starter.

Advice: "He was the clear leader from the beginning. We've maintained all along that if it was close, I would prefer to go with the more experienced player," explained coach Mike Pettine. Johnny Manziel was unable to close the gap, starting with off-field distractions during OTA season and culminating with a pair of uninspiring preseason performances. Hoyer, who will turn 29 in October and is coming off an ACL tear, will now serve as a bridge starter until the Browns deem Manziel ready. It's bizarre to hear of a 6-foot-4 tight end with 4.61 speed potentially being moved to fullback, but it's a moot point for 2014, as Lyerla will miss the entire season. Eagles acquired RB/KR Kenjon Barner from the Panthers in exchange for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2015.

Advice: The pick is likely contingent on Barner making the 53-man roster. Barner was on the outs in Carolina, but played for Eagles coach Chip Kelly at Oregon, and offers some badly needed depth at running back. His acquisition could be curtains for Chris Polk in Philly if Polk can't get healthy. Polk has missed the majority of camp with a hamstring injury. Packers waived/injured TE Colt Lyerla.

Advice: He'll revert to injured reserve if he clears waivers. It's far from a guarantee, as Lyerla is one of this season's highest-upside undrafted free agents. Standing in at 6-foot-4, 247 pounds with 4.61 wheels, Lyerla is a potential mismatch. He only went undrafted because of (admittedly serious) character concerns. Recovering from a torn PCL and MCL, Lyerla is staring at "at least" six weeks of rehab, and likely more. Brian Hoyer completed 2-of-6 passes for 16 yards in Cleveland's second preseason game against the Redskins on Monday night.

Advice: Hoyer got the start and rotated every two series throughout the first half with Johnny Manziel. Hoyer was bad, missing a wide-open Andrew Hawkins in the end zone for a would-be touchdown and throwing at his receiver's feet on his first throw of the night. Luckily for Hoyer, Manziel was equally bad. Through two preseason games, Hoyer is 8-of-20 passing for 108 yards. If we were to guess, Hoyer is still in the lead to be the Browns' starter come Week 1. The duo mixed and matched more in the preseason opener, but that first-team snap count ended 7-6 in Blount's favor. In the preseason opener, Blount received two consecutive red-zone carries while also seeing a third-down rep. The Steelers have been hinting at a possible mix-and-match committee-style approach since signing Blount and drafting Dri Archer. Blake Bortles shined in Thursday's preseason game against the Bears, completing 11-of-17 passes for 160 yards.

Advice: Originally expected to enter the game after halftime, Bortles checked in with 3:35 left in the first half, leading the Jags on a 45-yard field goal drive. With the obvious disclaimer that he faced second and third teamers, Bortles looked better than any rookie quarterback has this preseason, making stick throws on the run while dropping dimes in traffic. Unlike the Jags' last rookie quarterback, Bortles was calm in the pocket, and scrambled to extend plays, not avoid hits. Chad Henne has played perfectly fine this preseason, but Bortles has looked every bit his draft pedigree. Speaking Thursday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount are "both going to get their share" of carries this season.

Advice: It's an eye-opening comment, especially after Blount split first-team work with Bell in last weekend's preseason opener. While we're not afraid that Blount will supplant Bell as the Steelers' No. 1 back, perhaps Blount could find himself in the 10-12 carry range on a weekly basis instead of the 6-8 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette projected in June. It's not a situation for Bell owners to take lightly. Coach Mike Pettine insists the signing of Rex Grossman does not mean the Browns are shopping Brian Hoyer.

Advice: There's been a rumor going around that the Texans and Browns have talked a Hoyer trade. It's easy to connect the dots; Texans coach Bill O'Brien and Hoyer spent time together in New England. The Houston Chronicle's John McClain reports the Texans "won't be trading for Hoyer." Grossman is a No. 3 quarterback, at best, anyway. Hoyer is still in the mix to start for Cleveland. Rotoworld.com

  • Andre Johnson, Arian, Cushing back on field
Andre Johnson (hamstring), Arian Foster (hamstring) and Brian Cushing (knee, leg) are participating in Wednesday's joint practice with the Falcons.

Advice: Johnson, who was in pads Wednesday, ends up missing 15 days due to his strain. With an ADP in the late fourth round, he's currently a value pick as he preps for another target-heavy season -- this time from Ryan Fitzpatrick instead of Matt Schaub/Case Keenum. Foster's status will be worth watching closely as he's had recurring hamstring issues throughout his career. Cushing, who is now officially off active/PUP, will be ready for Week 1. Rotoworld.com

  • Nick Fairley still running with second-team
Lions DT Nick Fairley continued to run with the second-team defense during Tuesday night's practice.

Advice: An apparently motivated Fairley dropped nearly 30 pounds for the start of minicamp. But during the six-week break before training camp, he put 10 pounds right back on and appears to have continued to pack on the tonnage. Fairley's inability to control his weight even as he enters a contract year is concerning. Rotoworld.com

  • Bradley: Bortles will get first-team reps
Speaking Tuesday, Jaguars coach Gus Bradley confirmed Blake Bortles will get first-team reps "at some point" this summer.

Advice: "For me to say he's not going to would probably be inaccurate," Bradley said in classic coachspeak. However, Bradley again intimated the Jags plan to stick with Chad Henne all season, claiming the team has "really rallied around" him. We'd like to take Bradley at face value, but Henne is not a starting-caliber talent, while Bortles has shown well thus far. At some point, there's going to be a controversy. Rotoworld.com

  • Nick Fairely works with 2nd team on Monday
Lions DT Nick Fairley worked with the second-team defense at Monday's practice.

Advice: Coach Jim Caldwell cautions to not read too much into the "demotion," but did say "he could be better." Fairley is still working to get to a "comfortable weight." The Lions asked Fairley to slim down following last season. He's now apparently too light. Fairley's entering his contract year. The coaches want more from him. He's fully expected to line up as the starter next to Ndamukong Suh. Rotoworld.com

  • O'Brien upbeat about Johnson & Foster
Texans coach Bill O'Brien continued to express optimism Monday that Andre Johnson (hamstring) and Arian Foster (hamstring) will be back soon.

Advice: Neither participated in Monday's practice, but both "put in hard work" on a side field. O'Brien thinks both could play in Houston's second preseason game. "I've spoken to both those guys," said the rookie coach. "They're doing better. It's a long season and our trainers are doing a great job with them. But it seems like they've improved and hopefully they can do something this week." Rotoworld.com

  • Hoyer still ahead of Manziel on depth chart
Brian Hoyer opened with the first-stringers at Monday's practice.

Advice: Johnny Manziel hasn't passed Hoyer yet, as coach Mike Pettine confirmed the depth chart is unchanged. Expect the pair to rotate with the first-stringers this week before a starter for the second preseason game is named. All we know for sure right now is that Johnny Football has narrowed the gap considerably. Rotoworld.com

  • Kenjon Barner's roster spot in jeopardy?
The Associated Press has "growing concern" over Kenjon Barner sticking on the final roster.

Advice: It would be a bit of a surprise as Barner brings value as a possible return man and only needs to hold off Darrin Reaves for No. 4 running back duties. Still, the early part of Barner's career has not been promising. He earned just eight touches from scrimmage as a rookie while battling foot/ankle issues. Barner's pass protection has been an issue at camp. Rotoworld.com

  • Blount gets 1st-team work in preseason opener
LeGarrette Blount rushed three times for 10 yards in Saturday's preseason opener against the Giants.

Advice: Le'Veon Bell started and got two carries on the first two snaps. Then the Steelers hit a big play to Dri Archer out of an empty set, and Blount came on for two consecutive red-zone carries. On the next series, Blount surprisingly got a third-down rep as well. In the end, he played seven first-string snaps and Bell played six. "I don't necessarily know how they're going to (split up playing time), but it will be something of that nature, I'm assuming," Blount said afterward. "Ain't nobody going to sign me to sit me." • Browns deny Hoyer has been overtaken
Coach Mike Pettine called an ESPN report that Johnny Manziel has "moved ahead" of Brian Hoyer in the Browns' QB derby "untrue."

Advice: It's classic coachspeak. Pettine also left the door open for Manziel to start Cleveland's second preseason game, saying he hasn't decided who will get the nod yet. Pettine still hopes to name a Week 1 starter before the team's third exhibition. Hoyer is a solid game manager, fine spot starter, and ultimately a strong NFL backup. Manziel adds many dimensions to the offense. Rotoworld.com

  • Edgerrin James working with Trent Richardson
Former Colts RB Edgerrin James is working with Trent Richardson this summer.

Advice: The Colts are pulling out all the stops for Richardson after last season's struggles. James is the Colts' all-time leading rusher and volunteered to take T-Rich under his wing. "It was unfair to judge him [off of last season] because it is two different systems," said James. "This is the NFL. . It takes time." Richardson managed 13 yards on five carries in Thursday's preseason opener against the Jets. More yards were available, but he also didn't get much help from his line on a couple carries. T-Rich remains boom-or-bust in fantasy. Rotoworld.com
