  • Andre Johnson shining in Texans-Broncos work
Andre Johnson is "showing no signs of rust" after missing a chunk of Texans camp with a hamstring injury.

Advice: Johnson reportedly showed up "all over the field" during Wednesday's Texans-Broncos joint practice and made one "incredible" catch in the back of the end zone. "He's a big part of what we're doing here," coach Bill O'Brien said. The No. 12 overall fantasy receiver a year ago, Johnson's ADP has dropped into the late fourth round. After attending the Broncos-Texans joint practices, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora came away believing Montee Ball (appendectomy) could play in Denver's preseason finale.

Advice: Per La Canfora, Ball is "doing a little bit more each day," and may ultimately make a "rapid" return. He donned full pads on Wednesday and worked individually with Peyton Manning during one period. "We will continue to upgrade that a little bit tomorrow," said coach John Fox. LeGarrette Blount and Le'Veon Bell were arrested for possession of marijuana Wednesday.

Blount has a checkered past from his college days, but he's mostly kept his nose clean in the NFL. Both Bell and Blount will be subject to a suspension once the case is resolved. Advice: Bell and Blount allegedly had 20 grams of pot and were accompanied by a female, who was in possession of two grams. All three were said to be "cooperative," and admitted to the crimes. While this obviously isn't good news, it may have no affect on Bell or Blount's status for the 2014 season. Bell had zero off-field concerns coming out of Michigan State. Bengals signed WLB Vontaze Burfict to a new four-year, $20 million contract through 2017.

He gets a total of $7.6 million this season and is now one of the richest 4-3 outside 'backers in the league at $5 million annually. An undrafted gem out of Arizona State in 2012, Burfict has become a three-down difference maker for the Bengals. He's above-average, and near elite, both against the run and in coverage. Torrey Smith is anticipating a more versatile role this season.

Advice: The hiring of Gary Kubiak as offensive coordinator will be a boon to Smith's box scores. Used too often as a one-trick deep threat through his first three NFL seasons, the speedster's new role "incorporates his ability to run deep routes as well as short to intermediate patterns." Much like the Shanahan & Son offense, the Gary Kubiak scheme is ridiculously friendly to X receivers -- as we saw with Andre Johnson in Houston and 2013 NFL target leader Pierre Garcon in Washington last season. In the preseason opener, Blount received two consecutive red-zone carries while also seeing a third-down rep. The Steelers have been hinting at a possible mix-and-match committee-style approach since signing Blount and drafting Dri Archer. Speaking Thursday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said Le'Veon Bell and LeGarrette Blount are "both going to get their share" of carries this season.

Advice: It's an eye-opening comment, especially after Blount split first-team work with Bell in last weekend's preseason opener. While we're not afraid that Blount will supplant Bell as the Steelers' No. 1 back, perhaps Blount could find himself in the 10-12 carry range on a weekly basis instead of the 6-8 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette projected in June. Advice: Now in his true prime at 26 years old, McCoy is playing with a top-3 offensive line and in a run-first scheme. He's dropped a few pounds off his '13 playing weight, reportedly gaining even more quickness and agility. "McCoy seems better at getting out into pass routes and catching the ball. He teases defenders who try to cover him," Sheridan said. McCoy is our No. 1 overall pick in fantasy drafts. Rotoworld.com

  • Steven Jackson (hammy) doing agility drills
Steven Jackson performed some agility drills on Monday for the first time since suffering a left hamstring injury on July 28.

Advice: Jackson has yet to progress to sprinting, but this can be considered a step forward nonetheless. The 31-year-old is unlikely to see much, if any, preseason work. Coach Mike Smith continues to insist S-Jax will be ready for the Week 1 opener. He's a roll-of-the-dice RB2. On the surface, Jackson could be a value pick at his current late seventh-round ADP. But we tend to shy away from running backs on the wrong side of 30 who have lower-body injury questions. Rotoworld.com

  • O'Brien upbeat about Johnson & Foster
Texans coach Bill O'Brien continued to express optimism Monday that Andre Johnson (hamstring) and Arian Foster (hamstring) will be back soon.

Advice: Neither participated in Monday's practice, but both "put in hard work" on a side field. O'Brien thinks both could play in Houston's second preseason game. "I've spoken to both those guys," said the rookie coach. "They're doing better. It's a long season and our trainers are doing a great job with them. But it seems like they've improved and hopefully they can do something this week." Rotoworld.com

  • Blount gets 1st-team work in preseason opener
LeGarrette Blount rushed three times for 10 yards in Saturday's preseason opener against the Giants.

Advice: Le'Veon Bell started and got two carries on the first two snaps. Then the Steelers hit a big play to Dri Archer out of an empty set, and Blount came on for two consecutive red-zone carries. On the next series, Blount surprisingly got a third-down rep as well. In the end, he played seven first-string snaps and Bell played six. "I don't necessarily know how they're going to (split up playing time), but it will be something of that nature, I'm assuming," Blount said afterward. "Ain't nobody going to sign me to sit me." • Montee Ball loses 5 pounds after appendectomy
Montee Ball has shed five pounds since his August 4 appendectomy.

Advice: We're fans of running back weight loss, and losing a few pounds after having your appendix removed is par for the course. "I am getting healthy and strengthening my core, just listening to my body," said Ball. "Just taking it day by day, step by step. When you see me back in pads, you will know I am ready." Coach John Fox said the Broncos don't need to see Ball play in preseason games. "We will play it by ear," Fox stated Saturday. "We saw him play plenty a year ago. And we saw him plenty this offseason." Rotoworld.com

  • Geno Smith aiming to be Aaron Rodgers 2.0
Geno Smith said he expects to be a top-five NFL quarterback in a year or two, and believes his style of play most closely resembles Aaron Rodgers.

Advice: Set the bar high, young fella. "I liken myself to him," Smith said. "He throws a great ball and he's very accurate in the pocket, but he's also skilled enough to run around. I want to be one of those guys that can play from the pocket." Smith can make any throw on the field; decision-making was the issue in year one. He completed 4-of-6 passes for 33 yards in the preseason opener. Rotoworld.com
