  • Ryan Nassib a 'train wreck' in training camp
The Newark Star-Ledger's Jordan Raanan said Giants QB Ryan Nassib's "was a train wreck during Friday's practice."

Advice: "One 8-yard throw to the far side probably missed his receiver by eight yards," Raanan said. "Nassib needs to get it together." The Giants will give every opportunity to a player they spent a fourth-round pick on just one year ago, but Nassib may not have the talent to take advantage. With New York traditionally only keeping two quarterbacks, Nassib is staring into the very real possibility he is cut. Rotoworld.com

  • Gibson locked in as the No. 3 wide receiver?
The Miami Herald's Adam Beasley said the Dolphin's top three receivers are Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline, and Brandon Gibson, and he does not "envision that changing."

Advice: Coming off a patellar tendon injury, there has been talk all offseason Gibson would cede his slot job to either Rishard Matthews or rookie Jarvis Landry. Beasley does not see that scenario playing out with Gibson now healthy and working at full speed. Gibson posted a 30-326-3 line in only seven games last season. Rotoworld.com

Leonard Hankerson (knee, active/PUP) has been cleared for a running program.

Advice: Hankerson missed Washington's offseason program and doesn't have a set timetable to return. It remains possible that he opens 2014 on reserve/PUP. Hankerson is eight months removed from November ACL surgery. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: Vick Ballard suffered torn Achilles
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Vick Ballard suffered a torn Achilles during Friday's training camp practice.

Advice: It's terrible news for Ballard, who is now looking at another lost season after missing nearly all of 2013 to ACL surgery. Ballard was carted off the field Friday, and is currently undergoing an MRI. A limited athlete prior to his injuries, it's questionable whether Ballard will ever be able to make it back. The Colts will move forward with Trent Richardson and Ahmad Bradshaw as their top running backs. Dan Herron and Chris Rainey will compete for the No. 3 role. Rotoworld.com

49ers activated WR Bruce Ellington from the NFI list.

Advice: Ellington missed the start of camp with a minor ankle injury. Now that he's cleared, he'll compete for snaps in four-wide sets behind Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin and Steve Johnson. Third-round C Marcus Martin is also expected to return soon. Rotoworld.com

Chargers teammates have nicknamed seventh-round WR Tevin Reese "Sweet Feet" for his speed and acceleration.

Advice: "Kid can smoke," observed backup QB Kellen Clemens. Reese stands just 5-foot-10, 163, but ran 4.46 at the Combine with a 41-inch vertical. "That's how DeSean Jackson was -- little and fast," said WR Malcom Floyd. "He shocked the NFL." Reese is competing for one of San Diego's final wide receiver spots. Rotoworld.com

Colts RB Vick Ballard will undergo an MRI after injuring his left ankle during Friday's training camp practice.

Advice: The extent is currently unclear, but Ballard had to be carted off the field on Friday. With Trent Richardson sitting out as a precaution, Ahmad Bradshaw worked as the Colts' starting tailback. Dan Herron was with the twos. Rotoworld.com

Appearing on NFL Insiders Friday, ESPN's Michael DiRocco stated the Jaguars will aim for 20-25 touches per game for Toby Gerhart.

Advice: "They want him to be the workhorse back ... get 20-25 touches," DiRocco stated. DiRocco confirmed Gerhart will be involved in both the pass and run games as a true three-down back. Gerhart's ADP is currently in the late third round. Rotoworld.com

  • Report: Browns 'alarmed' by Manziel behavior
Sources tell the Cleveland Plain Dealer the Browns have been "alarmed" by the off-field actions of Johnny Manziel since trading up to select him with the 22nd overall pick in May's draft.

Advice: The Plain Dealer reports the team was particularly bothered by a picture that surfaced of Manziel rolling a $20 bill in a bar bathroom, suggestive of someone preparing to use snort cocaine. "Some in the organization feel he's lost ground in the quarterback competition heading into camp," adds beat reporter Mary Kay Cabot. Manziel reportedly "regressed in practice" this spring, and team brass believes it resulted from "not enough dedication to the playbook." Sources also told Cabot the Browns "have been stunned by his non-stop antics" off the field. All signs continue to point to Brian Hoyer starting Week 1 against the Steelers. Rotoworld.com

Updating a previous item, Bernard Pierce reported to Ravens training camp at 217 pounds.

Advice: Pierce played in the 230 range last season, which he came to regret en route to a plodding 2.86 YPC. His 2012 Combine weigh-in was 6-foot, 218. "I'm very confident in Bernard. I've always liked Bernard," coach John Harbaugh insisted. "He's a heck of a player. He's worked very hard, he's 217 pounds, [and] he's in the best shape of his life. He looked good out here the last couple of days." Rotoworld.com

  • Chris Ivory returns to Jets practice
Chris Ivory (hamstring) returned to Jets practice Friday.

Advice: We found Ivory's hamstring tweak noteworthy on Thursday because he dealt with hamstring troubles for much of 2013 training camp, but we don't typically post in-practice injuries in July and August unless they are pretty clearly serious. Ivory is fine. He's an interesting late RB3/flex pick this year. Rotoworld.com

    Falcons waived WR Darius Johnson.

Advice: Johnson caught 22 passes for Atlanta in 2013, but managed under 10.0 yards per reception and is a small, speed-deficient prospect at 23 years old. UDFA Bernard Reedy now has improved odds to make the Falcons' 53. Rotoworld.com

  • Whiz: Titans still determining Sankey's role
Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Friday the Titans are still in the process of determining rookie Bishop Sankey's role.

Advice: Whiz called Sankey a player "we've got to find out about" in terms of his ability to contribute and workload. Sankey's college track record suggests he can indeed handle lots of carries and be a contributor in the pass game, although that doesn't always result in high-volume NFL success. May pro evaluators viewed Sankey as a change-of-pace type coming out of Washington. In Tennessee, he'll try to separate himself from Dexter McCluster and banged-up Shonn Greene. Rotoworld.com

Cecil Shorts (hamstring) had to leave Friday's training camp practice early with hamstring tightness.

Advice: We normally don't post injuries like this, but it's becoming a concern after he missed most of OTAs and all of minicamp with a balky hamstring. The injuries have been piling up for Shorts the past season-and-a-half or so. It's something to monitor this summer. Shorts is expected to play in the slot more in 2014. Rotoworld.com

  • Andre Johnson reports to Texans on Friday
Andre Johnson reported to training camp on Friday.

Advice: We can all breathe. Johnson was in Houston talking with Texans brass earlier this week, leading many to believe he would report to camp in time for Saturday's first practice. He did just that. Johnson's not going anywhere this year, and will be suiting up for the Texans and catching passes from Ryan Fitzpatrick. He should still dominate targets, but Johnson's YPR average may take a blow. Even at 33, Johnson is still one of the premier receivers in football. Rotoworld.com

  • Pettine suggests Manziel could be package QB
Browns coach Mike Pettine said the team will consider using Johnny Manziel as a package player during his rookie year.

Advice: Unless Pettine is bluffing, he's serious about Brian Hoyer as Cleveland's Week 1 starter. "That's how Colin Kaepernick got his start in the NFL, as a package quarterback," Pettine noted. "On the other side of the ball, I've seen that give defenses some trouble." Kaepernick gashed Pettine's Jets defense for 50 yards and a touchdown on five runs as a backup during the 2012 season. • Philbin: No worries about Gibson's health
Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has "no major (worries)" about Brandon Gibson's (patellar tendon) health, and believes he'll be able to go "full throttle" in the near future.

Advice: Gibson is in the final stages of his recovery, but should still be considered week to week. Gibson needs to be healthy for the preseason, where he'll attempt to hold off second-rounder Jarvis Landry for slot duties. There's a strong chance Gibson ends up settling in at No. 4 on the depth chart. Rotoworld.com

49ers rookie WR Bruce Ellington (NFI) is dealing with a "rolled ankle," and "should be back soon."

Advice: The same is true for third-round C Marcus Martin. Although any missed practice time is a big deal for Ellington as he competes for No. 4 duties, it's not going to cost him his shot as long as he's ready for the preseason. Rotoworld.com

Chris Ivory sat out team drills Thursday with a "little bit" of a hamstring injury.

Advice: We don't normally post minor training camp injuries, but it's notable whenever Ivory's troublesome hamstring flares up. It's just a reminder that even if Ivory runs circles around Chris Johnson in camp, he can't be trusted as anything more than an RB3/4 for fantasy purposes. Rotoworld.com

Browns coach Mike Pettine suggested Johnny Manziel will have to improve his "dedication" to be a serious competitor to start.

Advice: Browns camp hasn't even begun, but all signs point to the coaching staff favoring Brian Hoyer. "I think he knows that in order for him to compete well, he's going to have to probably be more dedicated than ever," Pettine said of Manziel. Pettine confirmed to ESPN Cleveland that Hoyer will "be with the ones" when full-squad practices begin Saturday. "I think at this point, right now, it's more Johnny versus the playbook than it is (Johnny) versus Brian." Rotoworld.com

  • Bernard Pierce likes the Kubiak zone scheme
Bernard Pierce said he has a "knack" for new OC Gary Kubiak's kind of offense.

Advice: Pierce was a disaster last season, slogging through 16 games at a pathetic 2.86 YPC. But he was battling a litany of injuries to his shoulder, hamstring, knee and toe. Now he's fully healthy, back near his ideal playing weight and Ray Rice is facing a suspension. Pierce's extremely impressive rookie tape has us willing to take a shot on a bounce-back campaign. Vick Ballard (ACL) said he's passed a physical and been medically cleared.

Advice: Ballard tore his ACL in a Week 2 practice last season, so he's had significantly more rehab time than someone like Rob Gronkowski. Ballard expects to be on the field from Day 1 of training camp, at least on a limited basis. Bernard Pierce (shoulder surgery) has been "fully cleared" for training camp.

Listed at 230 pounds, Pierce also said he's down to 223. It can only help after a sluggish 2013. Despite last year's struggles, Pierce's role makes him well worth a mid-round flier in fantasy drafts. The Houston Chronicle reports Andre Johnson is expected to report to training camp on time.

Advice: Johnson was at Houston's NRG Stadium on Monday talking with team brass. It's obviously great news for the Texans and would ease the minds of fantasy players. The Texans have no real incentive to trade Johnson unless they can finagle an early-round pick from the acquiring team. Johnson has averaged 110.5 catches for 1502.5 yards with nine touchdowns the past two seasons. A shoo-in WR1 when healthy, Johnson's current ADP is at the back of round four. Rotoworld.com

Coach Mike Pettine said he'll name his starting quarterback by the third preseason game.

Advice: "I don't know if I'll set a date and kind of paint ourselves into a date, but it will be sooner than the third preseason game," Pettine said. The competition between Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer kicks off this week. The Akron Beacon-Journal recently predicted Hoyer will hold off Manziel, but Johnny Football brings the most to the table and should win the job as long as he performs and keeps his head on straight this summer.
